Gisele Pelicot, utterly floored by this

I am totally stunned by what happened to Gisele Pelicot, it is beyond horrific. The violation, the betrayal of trust, and that so many 'normal' men thought what they were doing was OK. I am struggling to find words. I'm not wanting to belittle all the other horrendous cases of violence against women. But to be drugged in your own bed by your husband and your husband allow other men to come in and rape you and he films it and he puts it on the Internet and encourages other men to do this to their wives. For over 10 years. What the actual f###? How much more of this abuse are women going to have to take before something is really done to stop it?

For those who don't have Twitter -

'The wife of one of the men accused of raping Gisèle Pelicot blamed herself for her husband's crime because she hadn't wanted to have sex for a while as her mother was very ill, and "as a man he had to look elsewhere”

Gisèle “could not help reacting” via her lawyer, who said:

She is more powerful than any man could hope to be.

@quixote9 wasn't that the Milgrim experiment? I've been thinking about how this relates to that. One of the men's testimony almost sounded like Gisèle's husband made him do it. Iirc this was the guy who stripped off and went into the room wearing nothing but a condom. It's pretty thin gruel as an excuse, right down there with 'only following orders'. The men had created their own bubble and some, if they're to be believed, just needed a little push to enable them to do what they wanted to do anyway.

I was listening to Woman’s Hour this morning when they were discussing this, and saying how this makes you wonder about how many men would be prepared to take advantage of a non consenting woman , ie rape her, if they believed they could get away with it. It’s an awful thought, but this case does seem to point to the awful conclusion that it is more men than you would want to believe. And yes, NAMALT, but it seems a lot are.

It made me wonder about so many other situations when the concept of consent is blurred or invisible , trafficked women made to prostitute themselves, women who are indentured servants and abused by their employers, women in forced arranged marriages of convenience, we are all aware of the casting couch me too scenarios , but there are so many other hidden lives where consent isn’t even a consideration.

It is very depressing, where the fuck do we even start to challenge this and get things changed.

They don't need to wonder. Research has been done.

What an amazing woman she is.
