Dear Sandy,

While you've been in charge at Rape Crisis Scotland, a man now serving time in prison for multiple sexual assaults was 'treated' at the Edinburgh centre.

The man in charge of the Edinburgh centre called rape survivors who wanted single sex services 'bigots.' 1/9

Under your leadership, multiple women self-excluded from the Edinburgh centre because of the male CEO you defended and praised.

On your watch, a 14-year-old girl who'd been raped felt unable to access support because she wasn't guaranteed a single sex space. 2/9

You claim I misrepresented what happened at the meeting at which rape survivors were harangued by your trans activist partner, who shouldn't have been there at all. Here's the survivors' own account of what happened.
3/9
parliament.scot/-/media/files/…

For years, you've been told by women's groups and rape survivors themselves that your policies were harming vulnerable girls and women. You didn't care. You wouldn't listen. Backed by government funding, you behaved with arrogance and complacency. 4/9

I can only assume your cosy relationship with the SNP government, which is a big fan of gender identity ideology, made you feel untouchable. 5/9

You weren't ever going to respond to women's concerns unless someone high profile challenged you.

Finally, you've decided to respond publicly to one of the women with concerns - me. And how do you address those concerns? You claim you're my victim. 6/9

Perhaps you should 'reframe your trauma', as the man you backed publicly told rape survivors to do? Or we could have an in-person meeting where you express your pain, and my partner, who you didn't know would be present, harangues you - exactly as you did to rape survivors? 7/9

I set up Beira's Place, a single sex service for victims of sexual assault in Edinburgh, because survivors who found it deeply traumatising to be told they must consider men as women if the men want to be seen that way had literally nowhere else to go. 8/9

You've placed higher importance on validating trans-identified men than on needs of female survivors. If I'm not moved by your tears, it's because too many women have cried as a consequence of the ideology you insisted they should embrace they were at their most vulnerable. 9/X

Thank you.

She's nailing it.

Any woman who could endorse that man being head of a rape crisis centre is fucking blind at best.

it's so damning it's difficult to believe. What the fuck was she thinking.

This ideology turns these women's brains to mush.

lcakethereforeIam · 22/09/2024 13:54

Doesn't she say in that article that she's a single mum? I thought she was shacked up with that TA who likes to harangue rape victims for wrong think.

Snowypeaks · 22/09/2024 13:57

Sharon Cowan is Brindley's partner, but I don't know if they actually live together. Or if Cowan sees herself as a co-parent.

I think that publicly attacking JKR in a newspaper interview when trying to do a damage limitation exercise to save your own skin, when JKR sent up and funds and entire service due to your personal ineptitude, was probably not a wise move and probably wasn't going to put the matter to bed.

All those MSPs will be squirming because you are now dragging out and amplifying a subject they are embarrassed about and wants to go away. They won't like that.

Support of the board you say? Hmmm.

It has to be said that of all the things you could possibly have done, going after JKR probably was the single most ill advised. And that speaks volumes about your sense of judgement.

I think that was decided a while ago!

Although, looking at JK’s Twitter feed, she wants to harm lovely huntsmen spiders… I will refrain from discussing fire in connection to her.

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2024 14:07

I genuinely do not know how Brindley could have misjudged that interview more at this point.

Is this actually a quote from the Times because I can't read it and that archive link won't work for me:

“I’m never upset in front of my daughter. She said, ‘What’s wrong?’” Brindley recalls. “I said, ‘Someone’s calling for my resignation’. She asked: ‘Who?’ I told her: ‘JK Rowling.’”
Brindley’s little girl looked up at her and said: “That’s one of my favourite authors, mummy.”

By now Brindley’s eyes are twinkling as she recounts the incident. “What I didn’t then say was: ‘Well, it’s me or her!” she says, dissolving into laughter.

She actually said it was her or JKR?!

Jesus wept.

If she tattooed I AM A TRA on her forehead she couldn't look more loopy. She is definitely in the JKR is an evil witch camp DESPITE the fact she set up a rape centre of her own. I mean, to have what seems to be a bitterness about JKR having done this, AFTER the whole thing with ERCC refusing to signpost onward is off the scale.

She needs to go. NOW.

Thank you for posting this. I am not on X.

She is a magnificent woman. First she gets a generation of children who had completely lost interest in reading to discover books and get excited by them again. And now she is a powerful, frank, spokeswoman for people who have been so disenfranchised that they have no public clout to speak out themselves. She puts her money where her mouth is. She is brave and egoless. I am in awe.

It is quoting the article but I don't believe she actually said the 'me or JKR' line. I think it was a passing fancy or something that came to her later.

The whole anecdote though was a whole look at how JKR hurts her young fans.

Is it just me struggling to believe that as Brindley clearly loathes JKR and all she stands for, that she’d even have her books in the house?

Iamiams · 22/09/2024 15:14

I bet the journalist was twinkling when Sandy said those lines to him. Copy of gold.

It’s almost a farce if it wasn’t so serious.

Anastomosisrex · 22/09/2024 15:46

"It's me or her"..... What does she envisage, that JKR is going to be 'fired' instead of her?

JKR nailing it as usual. Brindley's actions are multiply indefensible. And she still appears to lack a grasp of reality.

Anastomosisrex · 22/09/2024 15:52

I'm still waiting, on reflection, for Scotland's leadership to face up to the humiliation that without a philanthropist's extreme generosity and sense of public duty - in spite of the way she is constantly treated for it - the women Beira's place have helped would have had nothing . And they wouldn't have cared. And many would further have said that those women deserved it.
