John Lewis 'allows trans women into bra-fitting rooms' as retailer hit by furious gender row

High street giant John Lewis is at the centre of a furious row amid claims its controversial trans policies put the safety of female staff and customers at risk, it can be revealed.

The retail group is facing claims its inclusive transgender policies – claimed to have been unilaterally imposed on staff – are "dangerous" and relegate women to "second class employees".

Lesley Pickup, who quit her job as a "selling partner" in John Lewis' Cheadle branch, allowed her resignation letter to be published on TV comedy writer and women's rights campaigner Graham Linehan's Substack platform, "The Glinner Update". In her letter, she insisted "female colleagues live in fear of dismissal if they speak out".

Ms Pickup said that for the past 20 years, she had been "involved with female victims from all faiths, cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds who have been subjected to domestic and sexual violence and psychological abuse by men".

For some, she said, work offered "the only time in their lives where they should have guaranteed female-only safe spaces free from the demands of men regardless of who those men claim to be".

John Lewis 'allows trans men into bra-fitting rooms' as gender row hits retailer

The high street giant – famed for its Christmas ads and 'Never Knowingly Undersold' catchphrase – is accused of putting female staff and customers at risk in order to 'demonstrate their 'woke' credentials to a minority of the population'

Shops have loads of rules. You can't return sale items for cash, you can't try on underwear or swimsuits unless you're wearing pants, you can't have more than one person in a cubicle.

They could easily say cubicles are designated on the basis of biological sex. They can even quote the relevant bit of the equality act.

And have men staff the male cubicles and women staff the female ones.

Altho, God knows, I don't want sales men to have to go through an uncomfortable experience either, I suspect it would suddenly become far less of a problem.

Yes,I wonder how keen they'd be to get a bra fitting if Gerald was wielding the tape measure?

It feels like a big commitment for a man to pretend to be a woman to get a chance at a peek of a woman in John Lewis when regular men dressed as men are out raping women in broad daylight….still can’t understand why people get their knickers so twisted over this.

it’s impossible to police anyway.

It's not to get a chance to peek at a woman.

I suspect they are wanting to be their for a far more mundane reason.

I see the point you're making, but not all trans women have surgery - hormones increase breast tissue at varying rates, so it is actually reasonable that a trans woman would need a bra fitting. In my own circle of friends none of the trans women have had breast surgery.

i do agree that everyone needs to feel safe in this environment though, i know my friends would be mortified if someone felt uncomfortable fitting them. Not sure how we do this, but surely there must be a middle ground?

The middle ground is, men who identify as women whose breast tissue has increased by taking female hormones can just order a load of bras of different sizes, try them on and see which fits best. No need to get a stranger in a shop to measure you! Or they could get a tape measure and ask one if their mates to measure them.
BTW, bras are manufactured to fit the female body, so males are always goi g to find them an odd fit.

Yeah, impossible to police because they're impossible to spot.

Safety and dignity should be available to everyone. It's up to John Lewis to make sure that all their staff and customers are safe and treated appropriately. Not every trans person is an autogynaephile.

No, but every transwoman is male.

What do you think of Kim and his 'store walks' of John Lewis in suspenders and short skirts, all attempting to garner responses from women and children in the shop? I posted a link upthread.

I don’t think banning him from a bra fitting room is going to make a squirrel fart of a difference

Justwrong68 · 10/09/2024 11:56

@Theeyeballsinthesky

Indeed! I means there’s no esoteric mystique to bra measuring that means only women can do it. No reason at all why male staff can’t be trained to do it on men

Reads like a carry on script

Hoppinggreen · 10/09/2024 11:09

How about a male person in a short pleated skirt literally skipping over to me and teen DD in JL Trinity Leeds while we looked at Bras and asking if we needed help in a faux girl voice?
Good enough?

No that’s not an example of an employee being forced to serve a male as explained by the PP who has the real world example.

Your post is an example of a women being able to exercise her right not to be served by a man.

Difference to who? To what?

Have you read the hundreds of posts from women on here, many with teenage daughters, to whom it makes a massive difference?

Or can't you hear them.

That is not how fetishistic impulse works......it is not about the women at all...women and girls are just props that are used to achieve the desired attention/validation or an erotic, boundary pushing thrill.

So what do we do about men masturbating in parks? Ban all men from parks?

We tend to arrest them, when/if apprehended, for indecent exposure. Such men can be put on the sex offenders register it becomes habitual.

Have you ever experienced being on the receiving end of such behaviour yourself?

You don't seem to be grasping the key point about such behaviours......they are about boundary pushing and the illicit thrills that come from shocking others.

Pretty sure parks aren't women only spaces

im sure that would also apply to someone who was, male or otherwise, accessing a changing room and exorcising a sexual fetish.

banning a group of people based on the perception that a minority of them are criminals is absurd.

assuming all trans people are secret fetishists is a lazy - and frankly, baffling stereotype.

I wish there was this much interest from mumsnet in relation to men who identify as men’s violence towards women.

You must know that the murderer of Sarah Everard began with self exposure - his fetishistic impulses then escalated.

So let's make absolutely everything, every space, mixed sex. Riiight.

Tell me you have no idea about the concept of safeguarding without saying you have no idea about safeguarding.

We have single sex spaces. They are predicated on sex.

No male people may ordinarily enter into female only spaces. They are for female people.

You surely understand why women and girls have such spaces in the first instance? Or maybe you are new to this forum? There are many multiples of threads which discuss and explain precisely why we have single sex exemptions and protections, if you are uncertain.

Do you suggest instead having everyone who wants to access a changing room first revealing their genitalia to the door staff to secure entry?
