John Lewis 'allows trans women into bra-fitting rooms' as retailer hit by furious gender row

High street giant John Lewis is at the centre of a furious row amid claims its controversial trans policies put the safety of female staff and customers at risk, it can be revealed.

The retail group is facing claims its inclusive transgender policies – claimed to have been unilaterally imposed on staff – are "dangerous" and relegate women to "second class employees".

Lesley Pickup, who quit her job as a "selling partner" in John Lewis' Cheadle branch, allowed her resignation letter to be published on TV comedy writer and women's rights campaigner Graham Linehan's Substack platform, "The Glinner Update". In her letter, she insisted "female colleagues live in fear of dismissal if they speak out".

Ms Pickup said that for the past 20 years, she had been "involved with female victims from all faiths, cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds who have been subjected to domestic and sexual violence and psychological abuse by men".

For some, she said, work offered "the only time in their lives where they should have guaranteed female-only safe spaces free from the demands of men regardless of who those men claim to be".

We have single sex spaces. They are predicated on sex.

No male people may ordinarily enter into female only spaces. They are for female people.

You surely understand why women and girls have such spaces in the first instance? Or maybe you are new to this forum? There are many multiples of threads which discuss and explain precisely why we have single sex exemptions and protections, if you are uncertain.

Thank you for the italics. It really helps to highlight the specific parts you wish to really be condescending.

how do you suggest policing the access to suggested single sex spaces

I don’t think banning him from a bra fitting room is going to make a squirrel fart of a difference

It would stop him being able to involve at least some non consenting women in his role play though, wouldn't it? What other "difference" would it need to make?

So what do we do about men masturbating in parks? Ban all men from parks?

We charge them with a crime and sentence accordingly. If we don't, they will escalate. See Wayne Couzens as a good example of this.

im sure that would also apply to someone who was, male or otherwise, accessing a changing room and exorcising a sexual fetish.

banning a group of people based on the perception that a minority of them are criminals is absurd.

assuming all trans people are secret fetishists is a lazy - and frankly, baffling stereotype.

I wish there was this much interest from mumsnet in relation to men who identify as men’s violence towards women.

They're excluded on the basis that they are male.

You don’t lock your doors because the majority of people won’t statistically burgle you, you do it based on the tiny tiny minority who might.

If anyone should be putting in the same energies into male violence as they do about getting males into women’s spaces it’s people like you and those who argue for this.

Get those stats of male violence against women down - no matter what special feelings they have - and women might not mind the special ones who want additional privileges being in their spaces.

Do you suggest instead having everyone who wants to access a changing room first revealing their genitalia to the door staff to secure entry?

We don't need to do that becase social rules and practices tend to mean that such spaces are respected. Decent men/ men who have empathy with women know not to transgress.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/09/2024 12:41

It's not because they're criminals,it's because they're men.

This. I don't want to share female space with any men at all. Not my own family members, DP, male friends or anyone else's Nigel. Regardless of their claimed identity.

No it wouldn’t. He would just do it somewhere else.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/09/2024 12:42

That's not an excuse to not do anything at all.

People can tell if one is male or female without looking at their genitalia.

No - GNC people are frequently accused of being transgender.

I've always said that third spaces and categories are the solution for those that don't feel comfortable with the provisions for their own sex.

We shouldn't need to police such provisions. Decent people tend to be self policing. But if someone should transgress the rules then staff/employers/authorities can be alerted.

DadJoke · 10/09/2024 12:44

How have humans managed to tell the difference since the beginning of time who is male and female without getting their bits out?

I’m sure there are GNC whom this has happened to on initial sight, but would soon by dispelled once they opened their mouth.

annejumps · 10/09/2024 12:50

The entire problem is that the previous unspoken rules about men not barging into women's spaces are now able to be discarded and the response by TRAs is to gloat that they were unspoken and unenforceable.

Define “frequently”. I’ve never seen it happen, even once.

Lol, if you can't tell men from women without looking at their genitals, you have a much bigger problem thank you think Confused

You missed the memo that everyone is supposed to pretend they don't know what sex anyone is without a chromosome check.

And if you think every trans person looks like Dave from the building site with suspenders and lippy smeared across his moustache then you kidding yourself.

Datun · 10/09/2024 12:56

And in the instance of the chap up thread very helpfully posting a video of what he was doing, he'll be the one with the phone in his hand taking close up pictures of his knees and thighs as he walks around the shop.

Again, if he's in a bra fitting room demanding that a woman talk to him about breasts and find him a bra, it's not going to be a secret!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/09/2024 12:57

They don't. They just look like their sex, in the vast majority of cases, and as pp have said, they sound like it too.

And what about my friends teenage daughter who gets mistaken for a boy everywhere she goes? Should she too be denied entry? Or expected to prove her feminity with an inspection before being allowed in?

Datun · 10/09/2024 12:59

CultOfRamen

it really does transactactivism absolutely no favours when people claim that men will violate women spaces by stealth. And we can't do anything about it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/09/2024 13:01

Quite @Datun - do they think it's a persuasive argument?

What exactly about this girl is so masculine looking? I find it hard to believe she’s assumed to be a boy by everyone she meets?
