3 questions for GC women

1000 replies

ChirpyFinch · 28/08/2024 00:27

As the title says, three questions for the women in this chat.

  1. Do you think the majority of people are gender critical, and why/why not?

  2. Globally, the right wing is more vocally gender critical than the left. They are also far more likely to be regressive on a range of women’s issues like abortion and anti-gay. Why do you think they agree with GCs on this one issue but disagree on so much else (if you think they do?)

  3. How many trans people do you estimate there are globally?

If the OP is genuinely interested in what GC means:

Conservatives: women should do the washing up.

TRAs: if you're doing the washing up then you must be a woman.

GC: restrictive, outdated gender stereotypes are bullshit and everyone should do the washing up.

Yes - was just looking up gluten free just to help out, and the first recipe to come up is a carrot cake recipe from Yummly. American, so perhaps rather a propos to the thread. Also unbelievably disgusting - it's got pineapples and coconut flakes in, would you believe it! Also, pumpkin pie spice. Also, raisins and pecans but I'm good with those.

Anyone who wants to shudder with me (Halloween recipe?) here's the link.

Coconut and crushed pineapple are actually quite wonderful in carrot cake. You would have to taste it to know. It doesn't sound good, but fuck yeah it's delish, especially cream cheese frosting.

This is the perfect summary.

That wouldn't have helped our parents, bless them. Germany in the 70s was all free range kids, so we did our own swapping. I marvel reading MN sometimes - I routinely walked home alone aged 8.

Edited

I think independence in the 1970s in England varied a lot.

My first primary school mum took me the first day and then I went on the school bus alone. So at 5, I think I was met most days but I'm sure it wasn't every day.

When we moved to a more rural area we were in a new build estate and they built a tarmac footpath to the nearest primary school. Everyone walked, there would be the odd parent but mostly just the kids. I would have been about 8 or 9.

Just before I was 10 we moved again this time it was more built up and I was taken to school by car and usually picked up as well.

cariadlet · 28/08/2024 03:07

@XChrome I know I could just Google it but what on earth is crushed pineapple?

StealthSpinach · 28/08/2024 03:12

cariadlet · 28/08/2024 02:59

@StealthSpinach The jam drops look delicious.
I regularly buy plant milk and occasionally vegan cream but I've never seen vegan condensed milk. I'll have to look out for it.

A couple of years ago, I bought a little be-ro recipe book off ebay. It's identical to one my Mum had back in the 70s and is great for old school recipes.
Little fairy cakes and butterfly cakes instead of huge muffins with a sickly amount of buttercream.

I love the old recipes - I have my grandmother’s neatly written ones, and it feels really special to use them (plus they are delicious)!

I’ve attached photos of the vegan condensed milk I use - I tried several, and found the supermarket one was by far the best.

I just want to say that I’ve been on the keto diet for the last month and the one thing I’m struggling with is the lack of cake.

This thread has been very triggering for me, you absolute bastards. I’m now considering a ram raid on my local Co-op for a Victoria sponge. (Also known as a “jam raid” 😂😂😂😂🫣🫣).

(Point of note - I used to make rock cakes with my mum growing up but she likes the beigest and most bland food in the world - she complained the other week that sausage rolls from Greggs were too spicy to eat).

If anyone wants to share a keto cake recipe that doesn’t involve growing my own keto-crops or anything else too complicated, it would be gratefully received. Every recipe I find makes my head spin as it’s got weird ingredients.

cariadlet · 28/08/2024 03:15

@StealthSpinach Thanks for the photo. I can look out for that now.

XChrome · 28/08/2024 03:18

Has anybody here ever had the Canadian version of butter tarts? They have maple syrup, raisins and nuts in them. Out of this world.

1 pastry for double-crust deep dish pie
1 cup raisins (optional) or 1 cup pecans or walnuts (optional)
3 eggs
1 cup real maple syrup
2⁄3 cup brown sugar, packed
1⁄3 cup butter, melted
1 pinch salt

Roll out pastry and cut into 12 circles.
Fit pastrys into muffin or tart cups.
Sprinkle raisins and or nuts in the bottom of each tart.
Beat together eggs, maple syrup, brown sugar, butter and salt.
Pour into tart shells, about 2/3 full.
Bake at 375 F for 20-25 minutes, until set.
Cool 5 minutes and remove from pan.

StealthSpinach · 28/08/2024 03:20

@cariadlet - you’re welcome!

Thought I’d just pop this here - given the above conversations about carrot cake - it’s a new, limited edition cake from one of the supermarkets here…

It's canned pineapple that is pounded into a mush rather than in pieces.

Not if like me you happen to have an aversion for coconut flakes and involuntarily gag on them 🙄 must be how some folks are feeling about coriander. Love me a coconut curry so make of that whatever sense you will.

Finally.

That was well out of order...

Hmm. Not cakes, but still, since that ines always bothered me. I didn't realize sissification involved actually doing the washing up. Also, the stereotypes adopted never seem to include the mental load.

Enoughwiththisshit · 28/08/2024 03:49

shuggles · 28/08/2024 02:49

@StealthSpinach

Two tablespoons of cinnamon,
And two or three egg whites
A half a stick of butter
Melt it
Stick it all in a bowl, baby
Stir it with a wooden spoon
Mix in a cup of flour,
You'll be in heaven soon

Best recipe ever! 🤣

cariadlet · 28/08/2024 03:50

@GrumpyPanda Washing up was the first thing that came into my head but you can use chores, sports, toys, clothes, careers - any aspect of human behaviour.

Conservatives: gender stereotypes are part of the natural order and you should conform to the stereotype that matches your sex.

TRAs: Gender roles exist and are part of the natural order. If you are gender non-conforming and interested in things associated with the opposite sex then it's a sign that you were born in the wrong body and are trans.

GCs: Fuck gender stereotypes. Anyone can dress how they want and be interested in anything but sex is immutable and sex matters.

Just about sums it up.

@ChirpyFinch you might find this Venn Diagram helpful as you seem to be conflating the views of people you disagree with as if they are part of the same binary axis. Feminists have as much in common with the trans way of thinking as they do with the religious right. The trans way of thinking has as as much in common with the religious right as feminists do.

This is helpful, thank you.

Ok, so if I’m reading this correctly, GC is synonymous with second wave feminism as a rejection of gender stereotypes. Would you say this is accurate?

@ChirpyFinch Globally, the right wing is more vocally gender critical than the left. They are also far more likely to be regressive on a range of women’s issues like abortion and anti-gay. Why do you think they agree with GCs on this one issue but disagree on so much else (if you think they do?)

The right wing is socially conservative. Most people on mumsnet are socially conservative. Hence, there is alignment in perspectives. And obviously, GC is not the only point of agreement.

I don’t think that’s true.

I would be interested to hear the OPs response to “If you are doing the washing up then you must be a woman.”

ChirpyFinch · 28/08/2024 05:42

DrBlackbird · 28/08/2024 02:47

Right. Follow up: Why do you keep repeating the same question even after you’ve been answered? Including an answer that succinctly explained how the ‘right wings’ and ‘gender criticals’ hold opposing views on gender. Another follow up. Why is it difficult for you to understand the definition?

Do you think that the right wing believes in the same things gender criticals do, regardless of what that says about you

Gave yourself away with that one.

Anyhow, I’m looking for a good muffin recipe that could be construed as healthy if anyone has one?

It’s not that I don’t understand the definition, it’s that the definition has been different for almost everyone in this thread and that is what I’m trying to make sense of. There’s no sinister motive, I’m merely trying to get a cross section of what GCs believe about being GC so I can better understand it.
