‘Demure and mindful’ - oh great.

So this trend. I’m bridling at the ‘demure and mindful’ bullshit being promoted by someone who is performing femininity.

Demure and mindful women seldom make history. Here we go again, being sent back into our boxes by men.

Jools Lebron on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Very demure, very mindful - are we missing joke of Jools Lebron trend?

A demure TikTok has gone viral, but is it an ironic joke or does it set unrealistic standards for women?

@RamonaRamirez

I thought they were trans and not a drag queen. Nowhere in that article does it say that or did I miss that part?

"You see how I do my make-up for work? Very demure, very mindful,” she told her millions of followers.
"A lot of you girls go to the interview looking like Marge Simpson and go to the job looking like Patty and Selma. Not demure."
That is not particularly funny. Unless you like the mean girl style of funny.

DeanElderberry · 25/08/2024 12:13

I have no intention of denying that Jools Lebron exists, and don't care what he wears or whether he uses makeup - his choice, not a problem. And behind the closed doors of an entertainment venue, or on a site I'll never visit anyway, his crude sense of 'humour' is moot.

But if the BBC News site, in a world full of war, expects me to be amused and indulgent about his comment on office clothing that a shirt "only has a little chi-chi out, not my cho-cho", adding: "You should never "come to work with a green cut crease", I reserve the right to say no, not funny or appropriate.

Also to say that he makes it very clear that he despises women and finds expressing that disdain funny and exciting - which is a problematic and dangerous male mindset many of us have suffered from throughout our lives.

Thepurplecar · 25/08/2024 12:15

Just another man taking the piss out of women but it's okay because this man is 'one of the girls' FML take that you bitches, misogyny that you can't fight.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 25/08/2024 12:16

I get it, its funny because its a male taking the piss out of how he thinks females should dress. Very funny, absolutely laugh a minute. Now Where's that sarcasm emoji

So a person from outside an opressed class of people can make jokes and be celebrated for fighting the stereotypes of that oppression class, while being seen as part of the oppressed class of people that they are not.

That's interesting, because some people will read it as "TWAW so this is a woman calling out stereotypes forced onto women" and others will read it as "this is a male-bodied transwoman calling out stereotypes forced onto transwomen".

And from both of these perspectives, Lebron is inside the relevant oppressed class.

The spikey bit, though, as the BBC article writers obviously realised, is who is allowed to laugh at the joke, especially when the punchline is that a transwoman doesn't looks as elegant as they think they do (albeit tongue in cheek in this instance).

And if LeBron wasn’t using female pronouns, you would have a valid point as far as the point that this group of males should not be held to any sexist female stereotypes either.

No one should.

But that is not how this has been portrayed in that article.

See - personal and bitchy.

Just wondering why you had to tell us you're an intelligent woman, we all are, we just disagree.

Incidentally the word bitch has only ever been used to me by men, to silence me, didn't work then either.

The comment was bitchy. I did not call you a bitch.

Oh but I was joking, that's how it works.

RamonaRamirez · 25/08/2024 12:02

You missed the joke OP

it was quite funny, I am fairly GC but it made me laugh when it saw it on Tiktok, maybe not as funny if reported as a serious theme by the dour old BBC 😁

stop taking everything so seriously maybe? It was all in jest

I think I acknowledged that I missed the joke way back in the thread.

There’s a wider context of stereotypes of womanhood being all over the media at the moment, though. That and the terrible rise in misogyny means my sense of humour is a bit worn thin right now.

Anyone who keeps referring to those on FWR as bigots can fuck right off. Just stop. Argue your case (if you can), but I’ve had a gut full of being repeatedly called a bigot because I believe (as I am lawfully allowed to) in biological reality.

"It's a joke, it's banter, it did no harm, they were only trying to help, you are upset because they are trans. "

I had no opinion on the article and there's a lot of bbc non news i just refuse to read nowadays but the red flags are flying out in the defence like arrows.

Oh my god.

Do you read anything with your filter off?

Anyone else remember when Gordon Brown left his mic on and called one of his core voters a bigot without listening to her concerns or trying to understand them?

LunaNorth · 25/08/2024 12:28

She was an older woman, iirc.

Funny that.

And it's true, that every time a trans person is in the news there's a thread on here linking it to misogyny. Are there any transwomen who you like or admire? Do you think there could possibly be a situation where you might be friends with a transwoman in real life?

PatatiPatatras · 25/08/2024 12:32

The very idea of transwomen being exactly women is misogynistic so it should be called out whenever it appears, maaate!

What else did you think would happen when you screw women over, a free pass at least 25%of the time? 10%, 50%?

What level of misogynistic writing is acceptable and should not be called out?

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 25/08/2024 12:32

But when transwomen (men) are in the news discussing items ie being demure that only fucking affect women then yes it is a fucking insult because they do not and can not understand because they are men with male entitlement to not be judged.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2024 12:35

Do you think there could possibly be a situation where you might be friends with a transwoman in real life?

What exactly is this supposed to indicate? I might find them interesting company socially, as I do many male people. Am I likely to be BFF with a male who believes that stereotypes, rather than being female, is what being a woman is about? Unlikely.

ChaChaChooey · 25/08/2024 12:35

Apollo441 · 25/08/2024 10:29

Oh yeah you lot are famed for your humour. How are we to tell what is parody? Rapists in women's prisons, males in women's sports? But just go straight to the hyperbole, why don't you.

I wonder if Isla Bryson identifies as demure & mindful?

PatatiPatatras · 25/08/2024 12:35

And please go to the threads where we all started out campaigning for transwomen. There are multiple. When they started claiming the women category, most of us started to see really clearly and we are pushing back, hard. You want to be trans. Fine. Don't take hard worn rights away from women while you do it is all.

Claiming that these men are women is misogyny.

What part of a male person describing themselves as a female person, using the language that is needed for female people to describe themselves as being unique from male people is no misogyny?

How is a male person’s own conceptualisation of what a female person’s life is so that they can claim that description for what they feel not misogyny? They can only do this by allocating stereotypes as male and female and choosing they how they live and feel is ‘female’.

So, it is only ever a philosophical belief that they are a ‘woman’. It is nothing else.
