So this trend. I’m bridling at the ‘demure and mindful’ bullshit being promoted by someone who is performing femininity.

Demure and mindful women seldom make history. Here we go again, being sent back into our boxes by men.

Jools Lebron on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Very demure, very mindful - are we missing joke of Jools Lebron trend?

A demure TikTok has gone viral, but is it an ironic joke or does it set unrealistic standards for women?

Also - it's not about race.

Good to know that you cannot comprehend the question.

Or is it deliberate.

PollyDactyl · 25/08/2024 11:55

This is a great thread for lurkers to see how TRAs operate.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2024 11:55

Well, you don't get it, clearly.

You can't actually explain how it's funny then Grin

Prenelope · 25/08/2024 11:54

Well, you don't get it, clearly. But do carry on ranting because some people have a sense of humour!

I'm not ranting. I am making a reasonable request for you to explain this funny joke. I would like to join in with the laughter. Can you explain it?

quantumbutterfly · 25/08/2024 11:56

Maybe it's identifying as hilarious.

Helleofabore · 25/08/2024 11:57

Someone posts to say - oh come on, it's a joke.

Response "Why the silence from you in respect of the queries about if you would support Rachel Dolezal doing similar to the person in the BBC article on race? It comes across as you not wishing to question your own beliefs"

Absolute laughable overreaction!

No. Your answer just shows you can’t acknowledge the issue.

Either you don’t understand the issue being discussed or you choose not to.

PollyDactyl · 25/08/2024 11:58

Still waiting for you to explain the joke, sweetheart.

Helleofabore · 25/08/2024 11:58

Prenelope · 25/08/2024 11:46

Oh come on. This is a really bigoted thread. It's a joke, my dds say it. The person who said it first is trans, so what?

And this makes it quite clear that you don’t understand the issue.

Thanks for clarifying that.

Excellent artistically presented hyperbole, catastrophisation and mischaracterisation!

Great stuff.

I'm asking you to explain the joke. I'm wanting to listen to you and have a laugh but you won't let me know the inside joke. Stop being mean 😥

LonginesPrime · 25/08/2024 12:02

So a person from outside an opressed class of people can make jokes and be celebrated for fighting the stereotypes of that oppression class, while being seen as part of the oppressed class of people that they are not.

That's interesting, because some people will read it as "TWAW so this is a woman calling out stereotypes forced onto women" and others will read it as "this is a male-bodied transwoman calling out stereotypes forced onto transwomen".

And from both of these perspectives, Lebron is inside the relevant oppressed class.

The spikey bit, though, as the BBC article writers obviously realised, is who is allowed to laugh at the joke, especially when the punchline is that a transwoman doesn't looks as elegant as they think they do (albeit tongue in cheek in this instance).

RamonaRamirez · 25/08/2024 12:02

You missed the joke OP

it was quite funny, I am fairly GC but it made me laugh when it saw it on Tiktok, maybe not as funny if reported as a serious theme by the dour old BBC 😁

stop taking everything so seriously maybe? It was all in jest

Oooh more hyperbole, more mischaracterisation and more wonderful prejudice about what posters believe.

This is fabulous stuff now.

Would you care to engage rather than simply declaring that it was a joke. As if that makes it ok.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2024 12:03

I can get that this random MTF person made a hilarious joke about being demure as a non demure male, to comment on a fashion trend followed by lots of women and girls, and then lots of other randoms on TikTok have filmed themselves hilariously eating cakes to subvert the first hilarious TikTok.

I just think it's all a bit stupid 🤷‍♀️ and that males mocking women and girls for following stereotypes and trends leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

BunfightBetty · 25/08/2024 12:04

Prenelope · 25/08/2024 11:49

Aaaaand here comes the disingenuous denial. So demure!

🤣

It’s a joke. A lot of what they say is demure and mindful absolutely isn’t. It’s a piss take of the whole clean girl aesthetic trend. I think trans people are allowed to make jokes about current trends without being seen as monsters.

If only it were the other way round.....

Make a joke about a trans person and it's 'literally genocide.'

eatfigs · 25/08/2024 12:06

Yeah I was confused as to why this was on the BBC News front page until I read the article, then it all made sense. My only mild surprise is it's not a drag queen being showcased.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2024 12:06

Indeed @Katkins17

Yes Grin I imagine they knew it had the same vibe.

RamonaRamirez · 25/08/2024 12:07

@PurpleSparkledPixie the joke is that it was ironic

a person who is not very demure or mindful (who knows 😁) in fact rather the opposite, being quite OTT and silly, dissing a style she was wearing in her previous video.

she was basically taking the Mickey out of herself and it was funny as sort of unexpected (if you have not seen the original video, picture someone in full on drag clutching her pearls and tutting about being demure) it’s the juxta position of the outfit (and previous outfits) that makes it funny

like all jokes it is not really possible to explain, and you sort of had to be there 😁 but I tried for you

Good explanation but I think you'll find that they don't want to know.
