Caligula is not a newbie round here. I don’t pay a lot of attention to user names, but this one tickles me pink under the circumstances.

I imagine the emperor as extremely inconsistent, judgemental, prone to appalling random acts of cruelty and prone to chastising other people for breathing at the wrong moment. He was a fan of unconstrained personal power - but only for himself and is remembered as an impulsive tyrant.

So whenever Caligula scolds us I smirk a little.

''Treat mental health conditions with therapy, not with drugs and surgery.''

This.

As a child, I desperately wanted to be a boy.

They had much more fun, had more freedom- I even tried peeing through a loo roll inner at a young age,{Once} wanting to be a boy - I dreaded puberty, and feared periods and didn't want breasts.

But came to terms with it - puberty is hard on so many girls in particular.

It is clearly a mental health issue, and I'm so glad that hormones and surgery wasn't a ''thing'' back then.

But came to terms with it - puberty is hard on so many girls in particular.

I know I keep banging this drum but...

Puberty is especially traumatic for autistic girls because we:

  • Have a 90% lifetime chance of at least one sexual assault because we lack the social skills to detect a predator and evade him...
  • ...which becomes very relevant at puberty for most of us because most men aren't interested until a girl gets boobs.
  • Cope less well with change generally, so have less ability to cope with just our own bodies changing and managing menstruation and getting used to torture contraptions bras...
  • ...and on top of that, we suddenly have to deal with men and boys seeing us differently as well.

Autistic girls were massively overrepresented as Tavi referrals for a reason. Escaping womanhood was something I dreamed of when growing up and the numbers indicate that I was not alone.

Transition is not the answer.

Oh no! how did I miss that! I really have been skimming. Thanks DrB

And what a remarkable post? Denial of being upset (while making posts claiming to be a victim of being 'patronised' and 'talked down to'), and then saying they were amused, while posting such a fucked up sentence. Then the confusing edit which I also missed.

Edited

oops. I see now what the 'edit' was .

No, DrB, I don't believe that was an off the cuff remark. I think that fucked up sentence was a direct reflection on how that poster views posters on FWR.

It was then made clear in the post :

"Isn't it? That's how I feel about posters who say they are "so concerned" about a young person who is now deceased - so concerned that they discuss them using the wrong pronoun, visit Kiwifarms and sift through old posts and images of theirs (including surgery), etc. So, so solicitous! No, you're fuelled by these things."

This post above was absolutely aimed at posters on this thread. All because posters refused to use language that obscured Griffin's sex ( which is highly relevant and important information ) and a few posters use a site that stores screenshots of people's self published content. I take it the site stores that content in easy to access ways so people can view this content without having to go and search it.

And it was a site that the poster entered the thread to make the claim that because of their own characterisation of the site that the site was 'far right'.

("It encompasses all the hate and bilge that can't be expressed on the usual sites. This hostility and ideology stems most commonly from the far right.")

All that seems rather consistent to the many posters we see who seem content to demonise and vilify others while using hyperbolic and emotionally charged language to describe people who disagree with them. But who ultimately are operating under their own rather deep prejudices about the posters on this board.

I wish that I had your optimism that it was an off the cuff remark.

Strictly speaking, the user name is Caliga.

'caliga' was a heavy, hobnailed sandal-boot worn by Roman soldiers, an ancient equivalent of the ammunition boot.

Caligula was the childhood nickname of Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, when he was hauled around by his father on campaign. The little lad wore a miniature version of a soldier's uniform and thus got a nickname from a diminutive of 'caliga', 'caligula' - more or less 'Little Boots'.

Nobody called him that once he was emperor, of course.

Still, heavy, hobnailed boot is rather apposite.

Good lord. What a choice of username.

And how amazing is the my brain at seeking familiarity. I have been reading ‘Caligula’.

DeanElderberry · 21/08/2024 17:30

I've been reading Caliga and thinking Bootsy.

Caliga · 22/08/2024 02:18

Yep. Just 'Boots', not a crazed emperor.

And it was an off-the-cuff remark, BTW. There's no need for deep analysis into it. Seeing someone vulnerable - an outsider - treated this way even in death upsets me. You can rationalise it any way you wish, and you will, but as a practice it's unethical. (IMO).

ArabellaScott · 22/08/2024 07:48

That's a thorough article. The 'Safe Homes' organisation need looking into.

DrBlackbird · 22/08/2024 09:06

That article also provides insight into how far the TQ++ culture has embedded itself into schools and public services in the US. A dense network of partnerships and relationships that would be hard to unravel. No wonder so many American parents are upset about this. It could be the one key issue that harms the democrats in the presidential election.

Griffin’s words about adult male predators in these groups meant to support young people echoes those of Benji’s in Canada. And we know of those such as Stephen Ireland over here in the UK.

The lack of safeguarding is really stark and a major issue.

Helleofabore · 22/08/2024 09:38

‘Griffin received her “gender affirming care” in MA, and the doctor who performed her phalloplasty is still performing this surgery on other young people’.

This is also hugely concerning.

Yes, it's important to always be wary when people suggest that safeguarding rules should be relaxed at any time.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 22/08/2024 11:13

So how do we do supportive safe spaces for young people questioning their sexuality, while keeping potential groomers out of them? I can’t work out a safe way. Do LGB kids still need school clubs? How do we safely do that without landing in the ‘adult and children discussing sex’ zone?

ChaChaChooey · 22/08/2024 12:00

I expect the org that was based around it has now been Queered out of usefulness by now but I’ve always thought the ‘It Gets Better’ stuff that Dan Savage was involved with 15 odd years ago seems like a healthy way to support teens with an emergent same-sex attraction.

Basically, ‘things can feel shitty when you are young because you are stuck, in your hometown, in your parent’s home, in your high school, but when you are an adult you can choose your job, where you live and who you are friends with and yes, that includes same sex relationships, from dating to marriage. Concentrate on your education for now because it’s a stepping stone to your grown up life and your current struggles with your sexual orientation will automatically be better when you are an adult’

It sympathises with the teen without encouraging them to make age gap friendships and it casts homo and bi sexual orientations as something to grow up into without shame, without minimising how hard it is for teens who are experiencing same sex attraction whilst living with homophobic or orthodox religious families and/or nasty little shits bullying you in school. It doesn’t prematurely push kids into sexuality-as-subculture or gender-as-subculture in extra curricular clubs and it doesn’t make kids vulnerable to predatory adults.

At the same time schools need a no-tolerance policy for bullying AND a wide choice of activity clubs so that kids who feel isolated can bond over chess or figurine painting or rock music appreciation as well as more typical sports clubs.

And same sex relationship material should be taught at the same time as opposite sex relationships material in a matter-of-fact way, so ‘some families have two mummies’ in primary and then when teaching contraception and STD avoidance at secondary school, same sex STD risk should be included.
And then if any kids make disparaging comments (and let’s face it, they often do) teachers should respond with reminders that under the rule of law in the same sex relationships are equal to opposite sex relationships, regardless of what person x thinks about it or religion y teaches about it.

Just to add, at 13 years old when Griffin first said he was trans, it would have been totally inappropriate for older gay men to associate with him as suggested by poster upthread. And inappropriate for Griffin to go to bars.
But there are youth organisations for LGBTQ young people where Griffin lived.
Its clear you do not understand anything about this community.

Is this the type of place you meant?? Safe Homes MA

Because Griffin accused Safe Homes of allowing adult predators access to vulnerable minors (in this case, under the guise of a drag show - ironically, the very thing we are always told doesn’t happen), of looking the other way when sexual assaults occurred, and of employing a “literal child groomer'“ who was continued to be allowed to work with minors even after they were reported.

The more discussion that is being had around Griffin's medical treatment and the support Griffin had (that failed), the more details are coming to light.

This is why this discussion is so very important.

You can't when the people running the safe spaces are unable to risk assess based on having to facilitate lies.

DrBlackbird · 22/08/2024 17:15

@ChaChaChooey that sounds like the most sensible, helpful and healthy approach to sex Ed at school. I nominate you to be in charge of developing the PSHE curriculum.

Exulansic has posted a sad update, griffin lost consciousness after a second stroke and was on life support. The family decided to turn this off after a week as no brain function was detected.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 23/08/2024 07:57

How awful. That poor kid.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 23/08/2024 08:10

RTFT last night, I feel so sorry for this poor child. Really glad the death is being spoken about as it needs to come to light to hopefully prevent other young people choosing these surgeries.

I didn't know about Exulansic before the links on this thread but she seems to expose a lot of these surgeons so I will definitely check her out. Does anyone know is she is herself detrans?

RainWithSunnySpells · 23/08/2024 08:51

Yes, I believe that she is a detransitioner/desister. I don't know which term she prefers but I have read both referring to her.

It's a dreadful case, where a vulnerable young person was brutalised medically - to what end?

It's serious surgery, fraught with issues, obviously.

Poor Griffin.
