Yes he felt coerced into it.

All MH support was to be withdrawn if he didn't go ahead with it.

That is such a concerning issue for anyone that is so very very vulnerable as Ritchie was. I can only imagine that it is not a stand alone incident.

I cannot imagine what pressure is being brought to bear on these young teens and young adults. Particularly concerning just how many are in social care situations without a parent or family member to support them.

ChaChaChooey · 20/08/2024 14:48

The scolders are rarely interested in how much worse ‘gender affirming care’ is for female bodies than male bodies.

WarriorN · 20/08/2024 14:48

Yes. Very much so.

And then when he woke and said he regretted it, he was gaslit - it was the anaesthetic.

Then it was his OCD.

Etc

Never "maybe we haven't got this right."

timenowplease · 20/08/2024 14:28

So they basically strong-armed him into surgery??

I think I remember him talking about his after care and the complications he was having and not receiving any support.

Perhaps it was more he was in a coercive situation where he felt he had everything to lose if he didn't do it, if you know what I mean.

And I only bring it up because I think it gives insight into the decision making processes that some of these patients go through. Not wanting to turn the thread about Griffin into a thread about Ritchie.

ChaChaChooey · 20/08/2024 14:56

Just wanted to add this in before going back to Griffin:

Ritchie’s recent Andrew Gold interview has reached over 1.2 million views on YouTube (Andrew Gold’s highest viewing figure to date)

Yes. I feel this is true.

In fact, when it is discussed with a male extreme transgender activist, the female experience is actively dismissed with a 'well, of course, I support it. I have to give equal support to the opportunities to do this because that is 'equality'.' Whereas, I see that the reality is that female transition is very useful to these male people. The brutality of it all is dismissed because either the male people simply lack any understanding of how much more brutal it is for female people, or they cannot admit it because it shows just how much male people are not female people, ever. Plus, it is expedient for there to be so many female people with dysphoria.

Maybe Griffin's legacy is to force this discussion out into the open. It is horrific though that Griffin has been treated this way and that Griffin now even has a 'legacy' instead of being alive and being happy.

I just posted this on another thread, may as well copy it over here to illustrate the brutality of phalloplasty. This was an NHS funded surgery by a commissioned, private service.

Photo shows a UK transman’s one person, 24/7 camp-out protest (prematurely ended by Covid lockdown, I do not know what happened next but I hope they are OK).

This is grim reading!

The issues around urination are obviously further compounded with the negative side effects of testosterone on the female excretory system.

I can't help wondering if the fact there's no gay community anymore has any bearing on what these young people are going through? No role models, no peer group. No elder gays to associate with. They seem to be living their lives online.

Nadeed · 20/08/2024 15:40

Griffin died, but no cause of death has been released. You are all just speculating.
And it is rubbish to claim there is no gay community where Griffin lived. It has a number of LGBTQ bars and a large annual pride.

Nadeed · 20/08/2024 15:44

Just to add, at 13 years old when Griffin first said he was trans, it would have been totally inappropriate for older gay men to associate with him as suggested by poster upthread. And inappropriate for Griffin to go to bars.
But there are youth organisations for LGBTQ young people where Griffin lived.
Its clear you do not understand anything about this community.

Griffin's own testimony indicates that this surgery caused Griffin considerable harm, whether it was the immediate cause of death or not. We are entitled to discuss this.

It's overwhelmingly likely to be connected with the complications from surgeries though, isn't it?

It's very rare for 23 year olds to die. Griffin recorded all the problems emanating from surgery in great detail. The impact on the body was clearly very significant. No unrelated medical issues were referenced.

I'm not sure what the value is in trying to minimise the impact of these surgeries. We owe it to young people thinking of similar procedures to be clear about the risks.

It’s clear you do not understand anything about high risk, low reward, medical procedures.

Nadeed · 20/08/2024 15:58

Fine to talk about what we know from what Griffin posted. I do not think it is okay to speculate about causes of death and even worse to say we really know what must have caused his death.

Seems like you are trying to minimise the impact of this surgery on Griffin. Why?

Nadeed · 20/08/2024 16:01

I am simply keen that we stick to the facts.

The Political Compass test that places you on a grid with left/right and libertarian/authoritarian axes is still out there for anyone curious about where their views sit, and why

https://www.politicalcompass.org/test

It still thinks I'm left libertarian, though obviously there are some visitors to Mumsnet who would assume otherwise. It also seems oddly old fashioned, although it can't be much more than a decade old.

oh, correction, its header suggests it's 23 years old - maybe older than some of our younger posters.

And the facts are that Griffin's body was significantly impacted by multiple complications from this surgery and now Griffin is dead. At a time of life when death is extremely rare.

Nadeed · 20/08/2024 16:06

@TheKeatingFive that is the facts. Maybe posters can stick to them instead of some of the ridiculous speculation and untruths that have been posted?

Posters can talk about what they wish with guidelines

Nadeed · 20/08/2024 16:10

@TheKeatingFive True you can. But its pretty disrespectful. I will leave you to it then. Using the death of a young person to support your viewpoints.

I interjected because people online have done exactly the same about a relative of mine who was murdered. They were totally wrong with their theories and speculation. And it is bloody disrespectful.

Personally I think it's much more disrespectful to try to memory hole appalling tragedies like this - meaning that other young people are not aware of the risks. But we are all different
