On the Beeb now saying clear as day that the entire controversy over the boxing was wrong, it was the IOC's own fault and it needs fixing in the next Olympics cycle. No mention of individual athletes - the blame squarely where it belongs, with the mess the IOC allowed to happen.

I was a rower so he's a bit of a God to me anyway, but to say it so clearly and simply when I've been infuriated by practically everything I've read or heard about it, whichever angle it was from, was just AWESOME.

Funnily enough, no one is saying that about quite masculine looking women in some of the field sports,or the BMX. Possibly because they are actual women, not genetic men who have failed sex tests organised by their own sport, and have then declined to have those results challenged by an independent organisation, possibly because they know that the results of the testing would then be made public .

Exactly this. The female Indian boxed who failed weight is pretty masculine looking imo however exactly ZERO people have been saying she's not a woman. There's also no pictures of her in red shorts with an erection, which helps Confused

Pinsent is a legend in rowing. Must have won everything in the sport. Is he the guy who said ' if anyone ever sees me getting in a boat again - just shoot me!' . Great that he has spoken up. My sons gf is a dedicated rower. Thousands of hours on the water....all for naught if they don't sort this nonsense out.

that it's actually possible she has XX chromosomes but has gone through male puberty.

What condition would that be? Genuine question.

The specific DSD is De La Chapelle syndrome. People who have this condition appear to be male in every respect. Their phenotype is unambiguously male. Most only find that they have this condition when their partner fails to conceive.

no, that was the legend that was and is Sir Steve Redgrave . After getting out of the boat having just won his forth gold medal at Atlanta he said "if anyone sees me getting into a boat again they have my permission to shoot me". Went on to win a fifth gold medal at the next Olympics.

That seems to be directly oppositional to what is most established about the case. XY chromosomes in testing, brought up as a female. 5ARD would fit that picture much more easily.

You are absolutely correct. People with 46XY 5RD appear to have a female phenotype at birth but experience a fully male puberty. People with De La Chapelle syndrome have a male phenotype at birth and experience a male puberty.

Slight derail but that's up there with Andy Murray's retirement tweet "I never even liked tennis"

WookeyHole · 13/08/2024 07:36

Continuing the detail, but anyway, I thought Andy Murray's tweet was humorous, whereas Redgrave was deadly serious when he said that.

Yddraigoldragon · 13/08/2024 12:33

It is right that MP targeted the IOC. In a sense, the boxers are the pawns here. They have coaches and managers and sponsors who are all in it to win. Countries (as has been proven) will do virtually anything to improve medal chances.
So it is up to the IOC to ensure competitions are fair and safe, by making decent rules and making sure controls are in place to ensure all competitors follow them. They need the same rigorous controls around sex as they operate for doping.

I don’t know why female anything seems to be the ‘miscellaneous’, or ‘also ran’ class. That just makes the male class protected. And they are under no threat.

There should be an ‘open’, for all non-women. And then have female as the protected class. You have to be positively female to enter that. No ‘I am a male, but then something went wrong during my development’. That does not a woman make, and who knows what residual advantages one has, even if something went awry during their development, because of their actual sex class. It is women who are at a disadvantage if there is no gate-keeping.

It's clear that the female category isn't valued. It's the pity category for those who are not male, or those males without a penis which clearly is top of the pity pile.

Just as a slight derail. The local news just had a piece about one of the Gold medalist rowers who starts her new job as a junior Dr tomorrow. I think there are other medics and HCP sprinkled throughout the squad.

Presumably, not many of them believe in passport sex/gender.

yes, I saw it live on telly just after the race-he was completely done in.

Judging by some of the crap in the NHS and the BMA and universities, I personally wouldn't be too sure of that.

Citrusandginger · 13/08/2024 20:50

The crap might be loud, but trust me, there are very few true believers. Wink

ArabellaScott · 14/08/2024 07:46

The BMA decision to challenge Cass was down to 21 people, iirc? And that itself.challenged by about 1000 members.

Just gone onto BBC website to complain about their use of TERF in the reporting of Giggle vs Tickle. I notice that there were complaints about Matthew Pinset's comments in the closing ceremony and its sort of been fobbed off by the BBC as 'we did not have time to go into the detail'. Implied 'It won't happen again'. https://www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaint/matthewpinsentclosingceremony

They cherry pick the complaints to show based on (my emphasis): 'These are recent public responses we have made to issues of wide audience concern which have either generated significant numbers of complaints or raised significant issues (we do not respond publicly to all complaints we reply to).'

How is it possible to find out how many complaints. I.e. was this issue highlighted by the BBC audience or was it highlighted by the BBC (self-protective measure). How can I tell? How can I find out?

Olympic 2024 Closing Ceremony, 11 August 2024 | Contact the BBC

We’ve received complaints from some people who were unhappy with comments made by Matthew Pinsent regarding the ongoing eligibility disputes in Olympic women’s boxing.

Retiredfromthere · 23/08/2024 13:40

Ah, I can see that there is a fortnightly report - so here https://www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaint-service-reports So there should be a report with numbers up to 25th August next. Will be able to see numbers (if large) there. Meanwhile here is the complaint. Archived.

Interesting in the above link to see that there were complaints about

Transphobic question in the PM debate. Not upheld. https://www.bbc.co.uk/contact/ecu/bbc-prime-ministerial-debate-bbc-one-26-june-2024

Miranda BBC Two 20/04/2024 Homophobic and
transphobic dialogue
Not Upheld (no link given so cannot see what this was about).

Sorry for slight derail.

Re: Miranda BBC2 20/04/2024

I saw the programme, obviously it was a repeat. Essentially, Miranda went shopping, bought a dress but everyone who saw her in it, including the shop assistant who sold her the clothing, assumed she was a transvestite.
