On the Beeb now saying clear as day that the entire controversy over the boxing was wrong, it was the IOC's own fault and it needs fixing in the next Olympics cycle. No mention of individual athletes - the blame squarely where it belongs, with the mess the IOC allowed to happen.

I was a rower so he's a bit of a God to me anyway, but to say it so clearly and simply when I've been infuriated by practically everything I've read or heard about it, whichever angle it was from, was just AWESOME.

Yassine Arab, the director of the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committees, told the Syndney Morning Herald Khelif had been attacked by shadowy forces.

“The Zionist lobby, they want to break the mind of Imane. But now Imane is very strong. They don’t want that a Muslim girl or Arabic girl goes higher in the level of the rank of female boxing,” he said.

Just another way those pesky Jews are messing with the world again. Screwing up some innocent Muslim woman's right to box.

And for the avoidance of doubt, please note that I'm being sarcastic.

The facts are that the IOC screwed up, Sir Mathew Pinsent was spot on, the boxer in question is biologically male and there is no Jewish conspiracy.

It's depressing but I had someone rant at me last week that it was racist to suggest there was a genetic issue with the Algerian boxer.

It was in a deeply unprofessional context too.

If only Gary Lineker had the guts to say it.

Isn't it strange that a notably outspoken, left-wing, male sports commentator has kept quiet on this scandal.

I've heard it all now.
The level of crazy is off the scale. How about they look at Afghanistan, where a woman can barely breathe without a man's say-so? Or is that somehow because of the 'Zionists' too?

highame · 12/08/2024 08:49

Just adding my thanks to Mathew Pinsent. It was fantastic

RethinkingLife · 12/08/2024 08:53

Still, look on the bright side everyone-this is Isla Bryson on fucking steroids all over the entire planet.

Only in so far as it's acting as an immunuosuppressant. I'd like to be wrong but the sheer about of active disinformation out there can't be unpicked.

I'd like to be wrong.

TheKeatingFive · 12/08/2024 08:55

This is what I was talking about on another thread. I think this has been a turning point, more and more people speaking out. Now we can add Matthew to that list. 🙌

And let's never forget the ones who spoke out when it was difficult to do so. And the ones who were too craven to stand up for women's sport (Lineker top of that particular list).

Seriously. The person who ranted at me started with the war in Gaza (fair enough to a point) and then jumped to the boxers as being linked as part of an anti US rant about US imperialism and abuse of Muslims.

It was slightly disturbing if I'm honest. It was someone educated working in a professional capacity. They were an older female and very determined to show how open minded they were.

There's definitely a movement to link certain things together in this way that's slightly alarming and it's being swallowed and repeated by people who quite frankly should know better.

It was altogether very depressing. And the nature of the situation made it impossible to challenge. I left feeling very uncomfortable about it.

A variant on the Omnicause phenomenon?

RainWithSunnySpells · 12/08/2024 09:07

Wow! That statement from Yassine is crazy! It's the sort of thing you'd expect from someone who has been reading the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and hasn't realised that it's fake.

If only Gary Lineker had the guts to say it.

Gary Lineker would be happy with the status Quo. He likes to be on trend with his political opinions.

BeretInParis · 12/08/2024 09:14

I don't think people realise just how deep rooted antisemitism actually is around the world and how it has impacted the news and what is being reported about Gaza, etc. people feel emboldened to share their racism, especially if they swap the word 'Jew' for 'Zionist'. Which just means the right to a homeland. Any other country has a right to exist - except Israel apparently- and they brought the constant rocket attacks by Iran backed terrorists onto themselves. And are responsible for all the world's ills, including some people challenging a man's right to punch women in a boxing ring on the world stage. Go figure. Angry

Tommy Lundberg, researcher in Clinical Physiology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, who were relatively quick out of the blocks with ceasing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors, has come out strongly in European press over the weekend arguing the case for athletes to be allocated a 'sports sex' for the purpose of accessing competitive sports, determined by cheek swabbing and establishing chromosomal sex.

Cleaarly, if you are going to have categories, then there has to be a trustworthy and reliable method for determining who goes in which category.

NewGreenDuck · 12/08/2024 09:16

Sorr haven't read the whole thread, but has anyone read the article in the Daily Mail today in which the boxer's former coach is saying / implying that ' there was a problem with the chromosomes' and the boxer was distraught to discover that he wasn't female. I rest my case m'lud.

HoppityBun · 11/08/2024 20:18

Yeah but I follow Al Jazeera on instagram and there’s massive Algerian support for this boxer, which is seen as standing up against white supremacy.

Sounds typical of Al Jazeera.

Who?

Aside from Pinsent and Adams?

I am convinced Pinsent was not speaking just for Pinsent. And everyone who knows Pinsent will know he's not just talking from a personal position. He was previously elected to a position to speak on behalf of other athletes to the IOC. I'd put money on the fact he's almost certainly had a whole bunch of athletes past and present talk to him about this and he knows the mood and strength of feeling.

So I would not read too much into the lack of other BBC Olympic presenters speaking out.

He's spoken because it's a diplomatic way for those Athletes and the BBC itself to make a point. It's a hell of a statement and one you'd be unwise to ignore.

It stinks of lots being said behind closed doors in athlete circles.

Remember this is now ahead of a political election - the president of the IOC. There are a lot of British athletes past and present who would probably like to have Coe as the next President.

Pinsent statement is part of that context. Pinsent is influential / well connected in the right places.

Think about it as making a point about where British Sport stands on the issue and who they are willing to support as the next president even if it's not Coe.

All the potential candidates for the job are going to have to reassure the UK that they will uphold the IOCs values about fairness and the integrity of women's sport. If the UK isn't happy about how this is dealt with going forward, I think there will be issues.

Dibbydoos · 11/08/2024 20:21

Inclusion can work but transsexuals need their own categories.

Women cannot fairly compete with transsexual women. Men cannot fairly compete with transsexual men.

It's really straight forward, how could they have got it so wrong?!

'Inclusion' cannot work when it comes to female categories....because female categiories exist for the privacy, dignity and fair treatment of women and girls and are sex specific.

Shortshriftandlethal · 12/08/2024 09:25

lonelywater · 11/08/2024 20:30

they still think its 2015, when few people knew (and even less gave a flying fuck about) the fact that the gender mentalists were deadly serious. Strange because I supposed the IOC was mostly fairly smart people who could have seen this coming. I would love to be in the room when this train wreck is discussed, as it surely must be.

Thomas Bach, though, was clearly well rehearsed in trans rights ideology - with all of his talk about " What is a woman, anyway?" and " "Who decides?.
Not smart at all.

Helleofabore · 12/08/2024 09:27

Am I remembering wrong when Clare Balding supported Blythin as being included in cricket, and wasn’t Blythin the club’s women of the year?

I wonder if she feels the same way now?

Shortshriftandlethal · 12/08/2024 09:27

Apolloneuro · 11/08/2024 23:23

Why?

Because for Tom Daley 'inclusion' is the primary value.

RethinkingLife · 12/08/2024 09:28

RTB - interesting answer and not unlike some speculations with which I'm familiar.

In your case, implied inside information, in mine just speculation, that this might be part of a long game re: IOC presidency.

Nonetheless, no actual other names of people speaking out at present. And it feels as if the public is being purposefully mislead and confused which won't help any strategic long game.

I think the IOC need to take very quick action. Otherwise the next Olympics could have way more than two athletes who’ve previously failed gender/sex tests. The fact that they have previously failed tests makes it utterly irrelevant what it says in their passports or how they have lived. They needed an urgent re-test by the IOC.

I am surprised China have not complained bitterly about the medal in the 66kg category. Had the Algerian boxer not been in the competition, the Chinese opponent would have won
gold. And that would have made China the top of the medal table, above USA - world domination across the sports.

Paris did a wonderful olympics. It’s a shame they did not make proper checks on these two athletes.

Id like to see duplicate gold medals awarded to the silver athletes. I do have sympathy for Khelif so wouldn’t withdraw her gold medal. She has lived as a girl/woman since she was born and she obviously has a medical issue, whatever that may be. That must be hard for her, but women’s sports must not be destroyed as a result. The IOC has let women down.

Khelif has a DSD of the male variety - which means XY chromosomes and testosterone in the normal male range. In other words biologically male.

Was clearly recorded as female at birth and socialised as a girl until puberty when the true nature of the condition would have become apparent. Photos and testimony reveal that Khelif has not presented or acted as a woman ( according to Algerian social standards) for a long time.

Stop Co-Opting Black Female Oppression to Elevate 'Transwomen' Athletes.

Within the past week, a cultural uproar has emerged around the fight between Olympic boxers, Imane Khelif and Angela Carini, who competed against each other in the female division.

Is that referring to theFrench language article that someone very kindly linked to on here? If so, not only did it report a problem with the chromosomes, it also said Khelif has reduced his testosterone. I found it very interesting. IK has clearly gone through male puberty so isn’t insensitive to testosterone, so that makes 5-Ard even more likely.
