The original premises are getting crowded, we need to expand.

Welcome all women, and well behaved animals.

When my mother was in hospital a few times in her last years the thing that saved her was her habit of drinking (full fat, dairy) milk whenever she got the chance.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/08/2024 18:50

The summer rolls are pretty good too. Nice for a Light Supper.

My DH had a stem cell transplant a few years ago and was definitely kept alive ( and away from the dreaded naso gastric tube) by milk.

I knew he was on the up after 3 weeks when he asked me to get him a sausage sandwich from the restaurant.

When I worked in hospital, back in the 80s, I was ashamed of the food we had to serve the patients - it was inedible. I still remember having to mince leather hard liver with a knife and fork, and mix it with mashed potatoes, so I could feed it to a patient who couldn’t chew. Each meal included soup, and it came in three varieties - red, brown and yellow. We assumed that brown was something beefy, and red was tomato, but yellow was harder - chicken and veg soup, or just vegetable - and you couldn’t tell by the smell or taste!

When I was in hospital with covid, I was actually pleasantly surprised that the food was pretty edible - though some of the combinations were a little odd - macaroni cheese, mashed potato and boiled carrots anyone? Or lasagne, mash and boiled swede?

@EdithStourton - I have gone beyond space hopper - I say I have an equator instead of a waistline! If I find small, orbiting planets, I will panic.

Omg @Boiledbeetle wtf is that on the right, near the fork! 😳

Either the cooks finger or hopefully a sausage however I never went near it to find out.

But I am now home via a happy meal at McDonald's so I've finally had something to eat!

Thank you all for keeping me entertained whilst I was in hospital!

When I spent two weeks in hospital I reckon most of my calorie intake came from the chocolate milk my sister brought me every day.

I don't understand how hospital food got so bad. I am old enough to remember the days of kippers and full cooked English breakfasts eaten in the day room for those well enough to walk with decent lunches and evening meals. I know it comes down to price but surely making sure your patients eat after operations is worth spending more money on in the long run. How are people who are in for long periods of time supposed to get better when the food is so bad?

FuzzyPuffling · 29/08/2024 21:46

Home, Boily! Hurrah.

DeanElderberry · 30/08/2024 07:29

Hospital food is an odd one. I think the food my mother was offered was mostly okay (not like that Dublin coddle with added sprouts horror show) but because her Parkinson's disease left her partially paralysed she couldn't eat it in the allotted time, and nurses don't (have time to) hand-feed patients. And there's not much point employing dieticians to plan the meals in your patients can't eat them.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/09/2024 20:05

Good evening pub-goers all.
Wishing all the very best to anyone going back to school/ work this week. Or have children doing new stuff.
Power to your collective elbows.

Bannedontherun · 01/09/2024 20:09

@FuzzyPuffling had a blissful summer not having to queue in traffic, now school is back my journeys are longer, well never mind 😀

Boiledbeetle · 01/09/2024 20:27

All those having to have an early night I'll have your pint for you.

No work or school for me tomorrow woo hoo!

lcakethereforeIam · 01/09/2024 20:28

Are you back home Beetle?

Boiledbeetle · 01/09/2024 20:33

lcakethereforeIam · 01/09/2024 20:28

Are you back home Beetle?

Yeah, they let me home on Thursday evening after originally wanting to keep me in for a few days, I'm moving very VERY carefully around the house!

FuzzyPuffling · 01/09/2024 20:35

How are you feeling Boily?

I'm looking forward to some quieter days out and emptier beaches. Feels selfish saying that.

Not too bad, apart from all the trapped air they pumped into me that is making me feel like I've got bad indigestion, pain wise I was in more pain prior to the op! Which hopefully means they removed the right bits!

Its not selfish to look forward to some days out without loads of kids running around surely!?!

EdithStourton · 01/09/2024 22:14

Ah, Boily, you sound like my aunt after her hip replacement:
Me: 'Doesn't it hurt?'
Aunt: 'Well, a bit I suppose, but nothing like as much as it did before.'

Kept on getting welly. Have a double on me if the painkiller allow it.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/09/2024 22:36

Hospital does get very old, very quickly. Glad you're home and on the mend Beetle.

Could someone do Beetle with her feet up, in her favourite chair with an attentive gerbil nurse? Heaps of Tunnocks being rapidly depleted.

They changed their mind right around the time I asked them for a PALS leaflet, which may be purely coincidental of course

😁

I'm on my sixth Bluestocking mocktail! I'm suitably smashed!

Poor battered beetle

AlisonDonut · 02/09/2024 08:04

Poor Beetle, and anyone else feeling battered.

And best wishes for anyone going back to schools this week.

I do not miss that first week back when you get new students and they are all vying for pole position and working each other out and all the struggles involved.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/09/2024 09:25

Gentle hugs frae Scotland for our lovely Beetle.

Is there any chance of a strong coffee, please - I am up early (for me) because it is knitting group this morning, and knitting waits for no woman. I don't mind Monday mornings, but I wish they didn't have to happen on Mondays, in the morning.

DeanElderberry · 02/09/2024 09:31

NO! knitting (and sewing and crochet and whatever) group on Monday morning is a great start to the week - other human beings, supportive chat, all the local news - I suspect we have a few members who just some for tea break and general 'supervision'. I've just pressed my latest offering for our group project and am hoping it will still look good when I get to the Hall. I also want to find the gluten-free biscuits I've squirreled away somewherek.

quantumbutterfly · 02/09/2024 09:34

If you quokka something away, does that mean you just put it in your pocket.

Coming right up. I stashed me aeropress just by the honey so give me 5 mins.

Next door must be getting ready to come over to their holiday home, their handyman is here removing all their decking. So headphone on all day I suspect.
