TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes” | Mumsnet

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men? *”Two athletes competing at...

At this rate the women’s boxing will be completely swamped with male boxers at the next Olympics if the only eligibility criteria is a passport. Now it’s out how batshit the policy is will there be a country in the world that won’t find a male to compete?

Russian IBA president has finished, handing over to IBA medical expert now.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 05/08/2024 13:40

Thank you for the updates, I’m not able to watch.

Possibly not, as those countries less likely to have boxers with DSDs wrongly assigned female at birth might well have self ID, could the UK send a trans boxer with F on passport for example?

NotBadConsidering · 05/08/2024 13:40

Love this doctor!

”I know man. I know woman”

These aren't good communicators unfortunately. They are saying the right things, but not saying them very well.

Will there be a country willing to risk a female boxer’s wellbeing fighting a tournament against men?

I’ve thought for a while that an all-male Ladies Wimbledon Final might be what’s required to wake the masses, but perhaps an all-male Olympic Boxing contest might suffice!

Snowypeaks · 05/08/2024 13:42

Thanks to those posting updates on here. Much appreciated.

SabrinaThwaite · 05/08/2024 13:43

Yep - there’s a lot of waffle going on, which is a shame. The medical expert is an obs-gynae specialist, but he has at least pointed out that he could change the legal sex on his passport very easily.

Snowypeaks · 05/08/2024 13:44

Shame there aren't any zippy quotes. Apart from "I know man. I know woman."

Mollyollydolly · 05/08/2024 13:45

New Ross Tucker podcast just dropped - it's only short.

They're horrified, aren't they.

It's good to hear them speaking with such passion in defending women's sport.

(And aren't these supposed to be the bad guys?)

There are lots, I just can’t watch and type them

SabrinaThwaite · 05/08/2024 13:47

He’s going around the houses a bit to say that anyone can identify as they wish in their life but in sport sex matters. That, despite Thomas Bach of the IOC saying it’s difficult to define a woman, it really isn’t.

’I know where babies come from’.

rabbitwoman · 05/08/2024 13:47

The doctor has just quite passionately said that doctors know man from women, but they are too scared to say, they don't want tone 'pulked', lose jobs, and they have just asked him what his salary is from IBA....

'me? Zero!'

Don’t see why not. If the eligibility criteria is an f on your passport and no sex test that’s pretty much self ID isn’t it? Or perhaps I’m missing something.

He is great, though, this doctor.

Paraphrasing :

I explain to you what means woman, transgender, intersex. Because I don't think you know. In sport. We protect women, and we know how to do this.

Yes especially as many countries including this one can have their passport changed very easily. Here in the UK for example you don't need to engage with the process for getting a GRC in order to get an F on your passport.

At this rate we could send Anthony Joshua to the 2028 olympics as a female boxer.

frazzled1 · 05/08/2024 13:52

Would've loved to see a woman (XX) on the panel or asking questions...

PoshCoffee · 05/08/2024 13:53

I’m enjoying men speaking so clearly in favour of protecting the female category. Fabulous stuff, especially from the Greek (?) doctor.

quantumbutterfly · 05/08/2024 13:53

right wing ???? we've heard that before..

Snowypeaks · 05/08/2024 13:55

It's good that the doctor is a characterful speaker, because sadly that is more likely to cause him to be quoted and interviewed than what he is actually saying.

SabrinaThwaite · 05/08/2024 13:55

The medical expert says that medics from other countries had raised questions over the sex of the boxers. Says that the medical exam after the draw but before the weigh in (not sure if this is in Istanbul or Delhi) raised questions and then they took blood samples to determine karyotype.

quantumbutterfly · 05/08/2024 13:56

this chap is clear.

Press Conference
Chris Roberts, IBA CEO: ‘In 2022 there were a number of concerns about these two boxers. The tests were taken to a laboratory in Istanbul. The next tests were done at the world championships in India in 2023. It came through that the chromosomes of both boxers were ineligible.’
‘The IOC have had this information. And they have not done anything with it. All they require is a passport to enter the competition.’

It is 100% clear. Ultimately it is going to be down to whether enough powerful interests fight back against this. Like the countries which lost medals because men were allowed in.

I’ve just looked up which countries’ boxers Khelif and Lin may end up fighting.

It seems that if Khelif beats Suwannapheng (Thailand) tomorrow then he will end up fighting either Yang (China) or Chen (Taiwan) in the welterweight final. It could be interesting if it’s the Taiwanese athlete as I don’t see how Taipei can say “OUR athlete of course is eligible, but the Algerian is a man!”.

If Lin wins against Yildiz Kahraman (Turkey) on Wednesday then he will have to fight either Petecio (Philippines) or Szeremeta (Poland) in the featherweight final on Saturday,
