Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men? *”Two athletes competing at...

Teresa Smith on X seems to be onto it. ‘Starting shortly’, according to her, but that was 20 mins-ish ago. Maybe the IOC Athletes Commission Q & A was the warm-up act….

Brittney Griner is an interesting case. I don’t know much about the background but there were some Semenya-eque pictures floating around in 2022 of BG topless in a pool very much looking male.
I wonder what the eligibility criteria for women’s basketball is in the US?

Edited

without wanting to get too far into the territory of speculation or conspiracy theories, I bet Russia would have leaked the story, if it'd been true, that BG was male. it's exactly the sort of thing they would do. the fact that they didn't makes me think she almost certainly isn't.

Apologies for not initially realising from the tweet where I saw this that the question wasn’t asked of mark Adams. They seem to have started early with questions to other panel members. But he is speaking now, I believe.

the question is answered by Mark Adams at around 41 minutes, here

there's a follow up question at around 46 minutes

the argument seems to be that the IBA had no business testing these nice ladies, they were eligible for the competition, the end.

which does bring the tweet quoted by Eresh above to mind:

Tell me why the first proposition makes sense but the second one is absurd. This could make a first year logic exam.
We have sex categories but we are not allowed to do a sex test.
We have weight categories but we are not allowed to weigh the athletes.

Looks like IBA conference about to start shortly.

Zeugma · 05/08/2024 12:47

urgh, sorry for any confusion - I’m on a train and intermittent WiFi not helping, but it was actually Mark Adams who said he ‘wasn’t a medical expert’ (to add to his lack of legal expertise from yesterday, I guess).

Now going to sit back and try to watch the IBA conference without messing anything else up!

biddyboo · 05/08/2024 12:50

I wish they'd hurry up. I have to go back to work in ten minutes 😄 I'll have to come back on here for an update.

Mr Adams needs to educate himself, then!

Or alternatively resign in favour of someone capable of locating their own balls (as well
as the balls of any erroneously categorised athletes).

ChaChaChooey · 05/08/2024 12:58

I can’t bring myself to watch it. I can feel my own blood pressure rising!

The only thing that’s keeping me sane through this is MN and ‘all y’all’ (to quote my Alabamian MIL)

SabrinaThwaite · 05/08/2024 13:10

IBA press conference live stream has frozen for me.

There’s a lot of journalist there though!

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 05/08/2024 13:12

there was a giant man's head on the screen behind them for a while. that was weird.

no new info so far. just repeating what' already been said

Lin didn't appeal
Khalif did appeal but then withdrew

the test findings are therefore legally binding

It's really vey clear cut

rabbitwoman · 05/08/2024 13:17

'read between the lines'....

And this fellow does not appear to be Russian or Chinese.....

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 05/08/2024 13:18

it's a total clash of ideology. the IBA are coming across as completely baffled.

they knew Lin and Khalif were men. they let they IoC know privately, expecting them to say 'crikey, we'll disqualify them', but ran smack into the IoC's intention to allow men into women's sports and were left extremely puzzled.

they basically look like me in about 2016, confident that all they need to do is point out that these are men and logic and reason will win the day. poor chaps.

a quick google indicates he's probably not one of the goodies. doesn't change the fact that I believe what he is saying is true though

Read between the lines. The Algerian and Chinese Taipei boxing authorities have threatened legal action if they release the actual chromosome results.

fromorbit · 05/08/2024 13:19

Press Conference
Chris Roberts, IBA CEO: ‘In 2022 there were a number of concerns about these two boxers. The tests were taken to a laboratory in Istanbul. The next tests were done at the world championships in India in 2023. It came through that the chromosomes of both boxers were ineligible.’
‘The IOC have had this information. And they have not done anything with it. All they require is a passport to enter the competition.’

It is 100% clear. Ultimately it is going to be down to whether enough powerful interests fight back against this. Like the countries which lost medals because men were allowed in.

And IBA confirming that neither athlete would meet its eligibility rules - which were updated in 2023 to clearly define women as XX.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 05/08/2024 13:23

Passports: I really can't believe we're back to 'just because he has a piece of paper saying he's a woman, it doesn't mean he is one, and he can't have all our things'.

this whole shit show really is about allowing men to identify as women, it's not just a 'whoops, some men get mistaken for female a birth, oh well'.

some people will have been lobbying the IoC HARD and for a very long time to make this happen

NotBadConsidering · 05/08/2024 13:25

Someone asked the IOC imbecile if he thought it was defensible in Cas. I hope the affected athletes take it to Cas, I really do.

HipTightOnions · 05/08/2024 13:27

Any Russian speakers about?

This made me cackle.

Oh, Bernard, I remember those days, back when we thought ‘TWAW’ was said as a polite fib, before we realised that the unsaid bit was ‘TWA real W, now fuck off, womb holder!’
