TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes” | Mumsnet

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men? *”Two athletes competing at...

it's the Taiwanese fighter who looks nailed-on for a gold

Yu Ting was the only one who was definitely denied a medal by the IBA disqualification.

Just speculation but I wonder if the lack of coherency of the silly "Russian boxer revenge" argument in Yu Ting's case (Yu Ting wasn't matched with any Russians in the tournament at all) has anything to do with the focus on Khelif, the child pictures and family interviews etc.

WeeBisom · 05/08/2024 11:17

I've just read that Khelif did a press conference accusing critics of 'bullying'. Khelif was asked specifically about the sex tests and whether he was male, and refused to answer the question. If I were a female athlete in the Olympics, and there was a flurry of speculation about by sex in the media, I would be addressing it head on saying 'I'm female, and I'm willing to prove it'. It's interesting to me that Khelif is just refusing to discuss the issue at all.

lcakethereforeIam · 05/08/2024 11:20

I saw that, and articles yesterday about his childhood. Cry me a river.

the 'Russian conspiracy' argument is patently such nonsense, or at least any version of it where the DSD test's results were fabricated is a nonsense.

i wouldn't put it past Russia to leak something like this if the athlete involved was a big medal prospect representing one of its 'enemies'... but only if it were true. you can bet that if the leak weren't true the IOC would immediately say so. if Russia was in the business of spreading lies about other countries' athletes a far more obvious target would be, say, Brittney Griner, who spent a long time in a Russian jail cell (for completely unrelated reasons) and who is a key player in team USA's bid to get gold in basketball. the fact that no such stories got put out to me almost certainly say that Griner is indeed female, despite being 6'9" and having a voice in the bass range.

Maybe thinks that there could be some sort of repercussions for lying in future, in some way?

Agree - I imagine there are equally heart breaking back stories to many women competitors, but noone cares about women, real ones, do they?

I find it understandable that Khelif won't discuss this, whatever the driving motivation is.

It's easy to ascribe dubious motive but I should think Khelif is under team orders to leave the negotiations and statements to the officials and not to comment on the matter directly.

That's a very valid point.

Brittney Griner is an interesting case. I don’t know much about the background but there were some Semenya-eque pictures floating around in 2022 of BG topless in a pool very much looking male.
I wonder what the eligibility criteria for women’s basketball is in the US?

IBA press conference was due to start at 12 but seems to have been out back to 12.30.

Good tweet from Italian feminist lawyer Alessandra Asteriti

Tell me why the first proposition makes sense but the second one is absurd. This could make a first year logic exam.
We have sex categories but we are not allowed to do a sex test.
We have weight categories but we are not allowed to weigh the athletes.

Khelif has been very badly advised - should have been told not to make any statements/give interviews because each time the issue is not addressed it adds fuel to the fire that there is indeed something to hide.

spannasaurus · 05/08/2024 12:09

I wondered if all the support is being focused on Khelif because its easier to spin a story that a poor Algerian with limited access to healthcare would have been completely unaware of having a DSD after puberty but its harder to do that for Lin with access to much better Tiawanese healthcare.

To be clear, I don't disbelieve that Khelif was brought up as a girl and was believed to be a girl but I find it hard to believe that no one noticed when puberty hit.

I also think its likely that both boxers were scouted when their DSDs became apparent although I have no proof or evidence of this.

I had an acquaintance on Facebook tell me she thought I “was better than that” to post about the IOC turning beating up women into a spectator sport. She then launched into the standard “she was born and raised female. Be kind.” rhetoric that just made me 🙄🙄🙄

Why are so many putting male feelings above female physical safety?! I just don't get it. There could be a fatality!

Me neither - moreover, in a country that prohibits LGBTQetc identities and homosexuality, I also find it hard to believe that his evidenced presentation as a man in public and tv appearances would not have resulted in such a prosecution … unless everyone else around him wasn’t fully on board with the fact that he is a man.

Zeugma · 05/08/2024 12:26

Sounds like it all went brilliantly again for the IOC at their press conference.

Q: Were the tests carried out on the two boxers carried out by a reputable agency or an accredited laboratory?

A: I’m unable to tell you that because I’m not a medical expert…

I thought Mr Adams was assuring us yesterday that the tests were very, very bad? How did he know this if he’s ’not a medical expert’?

🤔

EatMoreFibre · 05/08/2024 12:33

It just makes the IOC sound evasive. As if they are incompetent, out of their depth or hiding something. And hoping we will all shut up and go away.

yourhairiswinterfire · 05/08/2024 12:34

A: I’m unable to tell you that because I’m not a medical expert…

He doesn't have to be a medical expert to know if the labs are accredited or reputable.

What an odious, gaslighting shitebag.

Perhaps the lab concerned which carried out the testing has formally objected to this characterisation?

Zeugma · 05/08/2024 12:36

Just be clear, this was a question asked of Emma Terho of the IOC Athletes Commission, not Mark Adams. But she's also there to represent the IOC so why no sensible answer?

She was also asked whether there’d been any questions/pushback from the women involved in this furore (it wasn’t phrased quite like that but that was the gist) and the answer - after a VERY long pause - was a load of twaddle about respecting ‘the rules’.

Apologies for not initially realising from the tweet where I saw this that the question wasn’t asked of mark Adams. They seem to have started early with questions to other panel members. But he is speaking now, I believe.

Yeah, seems to be. I was hoping to watch it on my lunch break.
