FFS disability is now on the pride flag

I'm livid. I'm disabled and I do not want to be represented on the LGBTQ+ flag.

Also this quote: Dayna Halliwell (she/her), Content and Engagement Manager at Evenbreak, led the collaboration and organised the Pride visit. She said: “It was very moving and amazing to see the reaction of disabled people in the audience. You could see the joy on their faces of being represented in the parade.”

I know people who identify as queer because they don't fit the gay or bi box

You mean they are straight/heterosexual? That is the only other option.

I know people who identify as queer because they don't fit the gay or bi box, so consider themselves queer. I don't know ANYONE who considers queer a gender identitity.

This claim is genuinely puzzling. Queer has most definitely included, indeed centred, those with a gender identity! How can you claim it’s not?

Trans is gender identity. Queer encompasses more. Some people who may be, for example, non binary, but there are many MANY who identify as queer who are CIS.

One example. My niece. Always been in relationships with men, but then fell in love with a woman. She considers herself queer as she isn't attracted to women, just this one woman. She feels that Bi doesn't equal simply being attracted to one woman. This may be the only same sex relationship she ever has.
Another friend who only has same sex relationships, but has had flings with opposite sex, trans and non binary. So he calls himself queer.
A group of friends who are in the BDSM community consider themselves queer, as they're not entirely straight, but only in connection to BDSM, so they don't' consider themselves gay.

This was awesome. Do we know what the event was supposed to be about? He’s talking about the dangers of anarchy, and queer theory because of their intrinsic endorsement of paedophilia.

The hecklers are shouting about trans rights and transphobia. What caused TRAs to link themselves with paedophilia by heckling that discussion?

When was it and who is he? It looks older than I think it is.

Ah I remember watching this a while back. He was brilliant

Chersfrozenface · 16/07/2024 10:35

Stonewall's definition of 'queer' is now
"Queer is a term used by those wanting to reject specific labels of romantic orientation, sexual orientation and/or gender identity. It can also be a way of rejecting the perceived norms of the LGBT community (racism, sizeism, ableism etc)."

(Note the second sentence.)

The LGBTQ+ Wiki defines queer as
"an identifier for individuals who are not exclusively heterosexual in their sexual orientation, who use it in reference to their gender identity and/or gender expression".

Your niece is bisexual. She just wants to be more interesting.

Christ on ice, this hurt my brain.

SerendipityJane · 16/07/2024 10:37

It's hard enough having an invisible disability

Actually that is exactly the type of disability things like this are wanting to include as it won't upset their Instagram like people in wheelchairs, or missing limbs, or blind* or deaf or with severe cognitive disorders would.

*Presumably this initiative "includes" gay and bi guide dogs. I so hope we are against the tyranny of speciesism.

SeriouslyWorriedEars · 16/07/2024 10:37

Fucking flags. The whole thing is ridiculous.

Blondiebeachbabe · 16/07/2024 10:38

Why does ANYONE need a flag, to represent what they get up to in the bedroom?

What if you only like sex with one legged people? Where's the stripe for that? What if you only want sex with people with big hands? Where's the stripe for that? Ad infinitum, suddenly you have a flag with a gazillion stripes.

How about we all grow the fuck up?

News flash. NO ONE CARES. Whatever you like, you like, and nothing about that makes you a special person who needs a flag. Unless you're 12.

So you agree that queer CAN be considered a gender identity too then? Why are you arguing it isn’t and ignoring the wealth of evidence from the claims of people in the world who say it is? Confused

Barryplopper · 16/07/2024 10:38

JohnnyAndTheDead · 16/07/2024 09:03

Why not?

Disability has nothing to do with sexuality?

SerafinasGoose · 16/07/2024 10:41

An answer, no doubt, to the protestations that inclusivity only works when it relates to natal males coopting women's spaces, sports and medical language, whilst in the meantime no one gives a shit about disabled people. Nor about commandeering their lavatory facilities as 'third spaces'. And once that unpleasant and inconvenient fact is pointed out, well surprise surprise! Disabled folks have been 'queered' - whether they want to be or not - and now have their very own place on the gaudy Pride flag.

The cynicism and self-interest is breathtaking.

I am a bisexual woman. I have two different disabilities: completely hidden from plain sight but both of which have a very real and life-changing impact on me on a daily basis.

Nothing about that offensive flag, with all the hateful misogynistic and homophobic rhetoric it now embodies, in any way represents me.

Quietnights · 16/07/2024 10:41

timenowplease · 16/07/2024 10:23

Where did you get the idea that Pride was about gender? It's not even close! 🤦‍♀️

This is why straight people have no business sticking their nose in. Probably exactly why we've ended up in this mess in the first place.

Well she clearly got that idea from Stonewall and all the other organisations who have decided homosexuality is so 1990s and gender ideology is so on trend.

Don't blame that poster. Blame the lobbying organisations who decided there was no longer enough money in same-sex attracted people so moved their focus elsewhere.

Its pretty clear from many replies on this thread than many people no longer have any idea what Pride was about and just see it vaguely as being 'something about diversity.'

Excourtclerk · 16/07/2024 10:42

UpThePankhurst · 16/07/2024 09:07

Likewise. I'm gay AND disabled and don't want to be involved in that mess on either count.

Fgs it's now just an 'everybody' flag, and a cynical mind would say it's the TQ political lobby dominated charities hoovering up briefs, funding and every other equality movement to control it the way they've consumed the LGB ones. There'll be save the whales on there any minute.

Agree as a gay woman I also steer clear of the whole thing as I think it's become quite toxic and too much fighting within the community.

The flag is also beginning to look ridiculous now. The whole thing is getting out of hand.

Devilsadvocat · 16/07/2024 10:43

Surely if you are disabled and gay you would be on the pride flag anyway. Im waiting for them to add Gingers to it now. ( not a rhyming slang)👩‍🦰.

ijustneedtokeepbreathing · 16/07/2024 10:43

Yanbu

betterangels · 16/07/2024 10:45

elliejjtiny · 16/07/2024 09:01

Yanbu. I am disabled too and disability should not be on the pride flag.

Same here and bi. Just wtf.

Beautiful3 · 16/07/2024 10:45

Do they need to include a symbol for everyone?! My dads disabled and he doesn't want to be on it either! Have they done it because many trans people have autism?

Demonhunter · 16/07/2024 10:46

And people wonder why so many LGB people don't want to be associated with this shit show, never mind adding disabled people in the mix.

That is Derrick Jensen. I believe it was one of his lectures but it has been deleted off you tube so many times the original text of what it was has been lost in time.

He is an enrivonmentalist with ideas that don't include wind farms. He and Lierre Keith founded Deep Green Resistance which is an activist organisation which views environmental activists as unhinged and ineffective.

DawsonsFreak · 16/07/2024 10:48

BloodyHellKenAgain · 16/07/2024 10:01

Surely vegans and vegetarians must be represented on the pride flag. Maybe by adding a carrot or a chickpea?

A giant aubergine would be an accurate depiction of what drives this utter nonsense.

SerafinasGoose · 16/07/2024 10:48

Quietnights · 16/07/2024 10:19

It’s a celebration of diversity, is it not? Unless you’re incredibly homophobic and don’t want to be associated, I don’t see why you’d have a problem with it

You try openly marching nowadays at a Pride event under a banner that proudly announces you are a same sex attracted lesbian and you'll quickly discover how diverse and homofriendly Pride now is.

(Clue: its not).

Yes. I saw that one exclusively lesbian group had been denied participation in Brighton Pride.

Lesbians, banned from Pride, because by their very definition they are women who are exclusively same-sex attracted. 'Pride' forgetting the actual definition of homosexual.

They are guilty of the very prejudices they were attempting to resist in the first place, but are now reinforcing them under a banner of kindness and inclusiveness.

What a bitter fucking irony.

Chersfrozenface · 16/07/2024 10:48

And while we're on the Stonewall definition ("..rejecting the perceived norms of the LGBT community (racism, sizeism, ableism etc)"), race and disability are on the flag now, so where's symbol for tall/short/fat/thin people?

SerafinasGoose · 16/07/2024 10:48

DawsonsFreak · 16/07/2024 10:48
