FFS disability is now on the pride flag

I'm livid. I'm disabled and I do not want to be represented on the LGBTQ+ flag.

Also this quote: Dayna Halliwell (she/her), Content and Engagement Manager at Evenbreak, led the collaboration and organised the Pride visit. She said: “It was very moving and amazing to see the reaction of disabled people in the audience. You could see the joy on their faces of being represented in the parade.”

Until LGBTQ people are able to live their lives without fear of attack I will support their right to celebrate how ever they wish.

How about just going out and living their lives then instead of putting on a song and dance about it.

' oh look at me, I'm gay, I want everyone to know I'm gay so I'm going to put on a funny voice and walk to prove it'.......

Why the need to bring attention to yourself.
Obviously the TQ+ is a whole different matter, but my god.

Eg, I work with a trans person. He goes about his job with no fuss wearing a male uniform and just being himself.
At a wedding for a work colleague he was in a dress, heels make up the lot and not one person batted an eyelid. Not even other guests that didn't know him.
Why was that......because he didn't put on an 'oh look at me' show. He danced and had a great time like everyone else.

Is this a way to justify sticking rainbows on disabled facilities so that 'queer folk' can take over them just like they tried to with women's spaces?

pandasorous · 16/07/2024 11:11

surely this is just to represent disabled individuals who are also LGBTQ+?

Your niece is bisexual and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Calling it something else doesn't mean it isn't true.

The niece may well want to call themselves queer rather than bisexual and that’s okay too. But trying to claim gender is not a part of queer is not aligned with most of those writing on queer theory.

As a mum of two both with disabilities i hated this all this I'm proud of my disability. I would rather they weren't and could have a normal life. There will also be a minority that will take the piss.

Exactly.

I'm not proud to be autistic or dyspraxic. I want to be able to live a life as easily and happily as most others.

At least this takes it one step closer to collapsing under the weight of its own bullshit

🤣🤣

DysonSphere · 16/07/2024 11:15

It's a joke, I can't actually believe what I'm reading here.

Ironically I have a lovely warm (not) Pip assessment coming up very soon. Shall I tell the assessor that my disability is my Self I.D. now and they are discriminating against me by even expecting me to answer questions about how I am affected???

I mean, will it work?

The sheer stupidity and frankly it's so disrespectful I cant even summon the appropriate words.

Trans is gender identity. Queer encompasses more. Some people who may be, for example, non binary, but there are many MANY who identify as queer who are CIS.

One example. My niece. Always been in relationships with men, but then fell in love with a woman. She considers herself queer as she isn't attracted to women, just this one woman. She feels that Bi doesn't equal simply being attracted to one woman. This may be the only same sex relationship she ever has.
Another friend who only has same sex relationships, but has had flings with opposite sex, trans and non binary. So he calls himself queer.
A group of friends who are in the BDSM community consider themselves queer, as they're not entirely straight, but only in connection to BDSM, so they don't' consider themselves gay.

The people in all of those examples are bi with varying preferences. I am attracted to men and to women. I have a tendency to be attracted physically more to men and emotionally/intellectially more to women, and I have a particular thing for women with red hair. I think adopting a special identity because I consider myself special and not to fit in a box is wanky. I'm bi.

The creation, conflation and change of meaning of identities is currently fashionable. People want to feel special, and different, and, I know it's controversial but some people even want to feel victimised.

I'm a disabled lesbian in my 60s. As a disabled woman I want accessible spaces and facilities, and adjustments from my employer so that I can work. Mostly I have those, though I know that's not true for all disabilities - we're a very diverse bunch, and some disabled people continue to experience real, material oppression. There's a lot of work still to do to provide access all areas and to as far as possible level the playing field, with a load more to do on provision for people who can't enter paid employment, and for their carers (mainly women). As a lesbian I want equal rights to marriage, childcare and all that goes with them, and I want to be able to hold hands with my partner when we're out and not worry that we'll get our heads kicked in. Thanks to the actual lesbian and gay pride movement, and groups like Stonewall in its original incarnation, I have all of that, and I'm able to remember a time when we didn't. Hooray.

What I neither want nor need is to be 'represented' (or appropriated would be more accurate) on a flag that doesn't actually represent my interests, but stands for corporate profit and a bizarre oppression olympics on the part of people who want to be cool and edgy. Nothing in the LGBTQ+ movement represents my interests, nor does it address in any way the actual material oppression of some disabled people and those who care for them.

Tolip · 16/07/2024 11:17

So the Q stands for Queer (or Questioning?)

But what does Queer mean in this sense?

It can't cover Paedophile?

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 16/07/2024 11:18

it's the TQ political lobby dominated charities hoovering up briefs, funding and every other equality movement to control it the way they've consumed the LGB ones.

This basically. The TQ wouldn't get the control, funds and power they do on their own.

The more actual discriminated groups they bring in, the more they can dominate those groups with their own agenda until they're completely captured, and any money it may bring in can be used to further their own cause.

As well as hiding behind them "if you criticise us, we will accuse you of also criticising them, because they belong under our umbrella now; therefore you can't criticise us"

Moier · 16/07/2024 11:18

Are you homophobic?
My daughter and myself are disabled.
My daughter is gay.
My psychiatrist is disabled and gay.
What's the problem?

AlisonDonut · 16/07/2024 09:40

This is Cultural Buckaroo.

perfectly put.

Pictureperfect9 · 16/07/2024 11:21

I believe everyone has the right to live in a society where diversity & consensual sexual orientation between 2 adults is accepted without discrimination. My one question to the gay community is by always supporting your own community first, in for example job offers, promotions etc, could this be considered a form of discrimination against straight people? I have seen this happen on many occasions where ability etc has not been a priority, not only in the workplace but in general. I feel this type of behaviour is doing the cause of acceptance no good whatsoever. I'd be interested in thoughts on the subject. Again I'm saying this without prejudice & purely an observation also questioned by many others.

MarieDeGournay · 16/07/2024 11:22

As well as hiding behind them "if you criticise us, we will accuse you of also criticising them, because they belong under our umbrella now; therefore you can't criticise us"
Very astute observation MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking.
And the very next post from Moier is either deliberate irony or an excellent example of the previous post!

Harassedevictee · 16/07/2024 11:22

So essentially the pride flag will end up representing everyone at least once. Adding religion would be helpful, a nice Jedi lightsaber across the heart would look a bit like a cupids arrow. (Lighthearted ) 😂

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 16/07/2024 11:23

Moier · 16/07/2024 11:18

Are you homophobic?

What's the problem?

There are 10 pages now of people explaining why they have a problem with it.

Many of whom (like me) are LGB and also disabled.

MaidOfAle · 16/07/2024 11:25

The more shit they plaster on top of the rainbow to cover it up, the more obvious the homo- and biphobia.

Operation Let Them Speak continues to deliver the goods.

Sloejelly · 16/07/2024 11:25

Moier · 16/07/2024 11:18

Are you homophobic?

Not sure if it is the point you are trying to make but you illustrate the issue - disagree with these organisations representing your disability and suddenly you find yourself having accusations of homophobia thrown at you.

‘How dare you state that a painted crossing a waste of money that could have been better spent on a ramp. Homophobic bigot!’

haveatye · 16/07/2024 11:26

Who isn't included within the pride flag? And if it includes literally everyone, what's the point? If it excludes some groups, equally what's the point?

Can you be a straight male privately educated banker living in st Alban's and still be part of the pride shtick?

Crystallizedring · 16/07/2024 11:27

I just told my autistic teenager about this. She asked why anyone would want to celebrate being disabled.

Lovemusic82 · 16/07/2024 11:27

I always thought pride was about being gay (sexuality) then suddenly being trans was included…and non binary….nothing to do with sexuality as it’s ‘gender identity’? Now they are adding ‘disabled’ which has nothing to do with sexuality or gender identity?

quantumbutterfly · 16/07/2024 11:27

Reminds me of the intro from dad's army, can we have a suffragette coloured arrow pushing in the other direction?

WallaceinAnderland · 16/07/2024 11:28

pandasorous · 16/07/2024 11:11

surely this is just to represent disabled individuals who are also LGBTQ+?

Weren't they already represented?
