Every room in my house has at least 2 full bookshelves, and I still agree with this. There is nothing inherently sacred about a book as an object. It's the contents that count. There's nothing wrong with getting rid of a book because you think it's bad, there's everything wrong with preventing others from obtaining information or perspectives simply because you don't like the consequences of it.

even the bathroom? Don't they go mouldy/soggy?

In a sippy cup with a fucking rainbow unicorn on it.

Police officer logging possessions in custody post arrest:
hammer, chisel, facemask and 1 carton of um bongo juice. A hardened criminal indeed.

And how on earth do you 'avoid CCTV?' ffs? Given waterstones are pretty much all in town/city centres

lcakethereforeIam · 09/07/2024 19:06

@1offnamechange That's where you put the rubbish ones with nice absorbent pages 😁

Where DO you keep your Judith Butler?

'Speaking to The Independent, Ms Fitzgerald added: “I’m absolutely devastated that this escalated to me losing a job a love.
“I acknowledge that my comments were a violation of the social media policy, and I did apologise for any trouble caused, however, I think the punishment was disproportionate and a warning would have been more appropriate.”

Ms Fitzgerald has also taken to social media to urge others in the publishing industry to be careful about what they say online.
“I just want to be really clear that this decision came from head office - from someone I probably don’t even know and who doesn’t know me,” she added. “It had nothing to do with my team in my shop. They are the best team and that’s why I’m sad.”'

Waterstones slammed for sacking bookseller who threatened to ‘tear up’ author’s work

Exclusive: Her sacking has sparked a backlash from the LGBTQ community against the retailer

Er, yes, because it's head office who are having to deal with the shit storm you've created for the company Tilly, you absolute plum.

ArabellaScott · 09/07/2024 16:43

Yes, this is a very disturbed individual.

It looks as if Twitter have taken this post down, for violating their rules.

It seems they'll do that if someone incites violence against a shop, but not if they incite violence against a GC woman.

Nope! I read in the bath and they get rotated (although admittedly the bathroom one is a little shelf of five or so).

Mine are kept in the bathroom cabinet

there is nothing worse than having to cut a bath short cos youve run out of book

Genius. Sheer genius.

“I acknowledge that my comments were a violation of the social media policy, and I did apologise for any trouble caused, however, I think the punishment was disproportionate and a warning would have been more appropriate.

So the woman who goes round trying to get other people cancelled for having views she disagrees with finds that she's not so keen on cancellation when it comes and bites her on the bum.

Of course if she had an ounce of intelligence in her teeny-weeny brain she might reflect on the value of things like free speech, the problems of censorship and so on, but like so many of her co-ideologists, she is a very long way from being the sharpest knife in the drawer. I doubt she could slice a stick of butter on a hot day, to be honest.

AnnaMagnani · 09/07/2024 20:18

Some of the comments on the iNews article are interesting.

Confirming Tilly is someone who forgot she was a shop assistant at Waterstones, got carried away with her own importance as an 'influencer' and had been pissing people off for a long time.

Ohyoudodoyou · 09/07/2024 20:19

I've just seen more of this woman's videos on TikTok and I'm absolutely convinced there is more to this than meets the dry-eye.
All odd.

Ohyoudodoyou · 09/07/2024 20:20

Or insta or whatever method she's using to weep and wail over this heinous act of injustice.

NameChangeAgainto · 09/07/2024 20:43

Publishing is probably the most captured of all the captured industries. JK Rowling was extremely brave (though obviously was never going to be cancelled). Dalcher WAS cancelled, last year - she was dropped by both agent and publisher, and most likely won't publish a novel ever again. That's why she's got no fucks left to give, I believe. She didn't post a video of herself whingeing about it though, or even get in the fucking news. I wouldn't be surprised if Tilly gets another job instantly

DidYerAye · 09/07/2024 21:01

Ms Fitzgerald has also taken to social media to urge others in the publishing industry to be careful about what they say online.

So true. Maybe someone should form an organisation to protect the freedom of speech of people in publishing who... Oh, wait.

I saw this on Twitter last night, but what’s the background re the writer she was publicly trashing?

Like others, I’m not a fan of people losing their jobs for their opinions. Too many feminists have suffered in this way and we can’t protest that, while being comfortable about this. I think Waterstones should have given her a stern warning and a disciplinary hearing so she stops being a bigot on SM.

It's ironic that plenty of TRAs on X are now demanding that she be given a second chance by Waterstones when these were the same intolerant zealots who adopted a zero tolerance stance to anyone who they felt had 'infringed' and therefore should have their livelihoods destroyed. Fuck them.

Humtum · 09/07/2024 21:51

Tilly has 99% got her 9-5 right as a champion and well respected book seller.
I'm not sure you could give the same champion review of this writer given her reviews. Whilst I appreciate Tilly's views as a safeguard to bigotry / people benefiting from bigotry, binning books should never be promoted.

Meanwhile Minister for Women and Equalities, Anneliese Dodds is off to a stellar start "I will deliver our plans to support women and girls, advance race equality, break new ground for LGBT+ rights and stand up for disabled people." https://x.com/AnnelieseDodds

Yeah... posting on social media questioning your former employer for sacking you due to your comments on social media is a not a clever move and doesn’t make you sound particularly sensible or employable

"I just want to be really clear that this decision came from head office - from someone I probably don’t even know and who doesn’t know me,”

Keep digging...

I think this is true - or rather, they are underdeveloped, childish in its first sense. There's a kind of Lord of the Flies-ness about them, the weepiness of the little ones combined with the vicious pitilessness of the older ones.

You know that TRANS MPs ..... Deputy Prime Minister (of Belgium).... and space plasma physicist scientists.... exist...

The Vox writer has done two helpful things - firstly, they mentioned the database of evidence showing rejection responses by publishers that will appeal to a variety of folk.

Secondly, the writer who is in a position of power + influence relative to a shelf stacker has amplified the comment by Tilly through her socials -short term, Tilly lost her job, but the attention has likely aided Tilly watch this space

I've seen other writers on Twitter - unrelated and related to gender question the actions of this writer. It seems a bit desperate and it caused me to look up reviews of VOX.

There's a lot of appetite for kind, considered and progressive conversation around gender. The more accountability, data, peoples voices (all voices), evidence can only be a good thing.

[anticipating the single replies of being called a TRA for this post. - If not being a bigot makes me a TRA then sign. me. up 🌻]

NameChangeAgainto · 09/07/2024 23:04

@Humtum I can't follow what you're saying really. What do you mean by she's got 99% of her 9-5 right?

I would take reviews of a book with a pinch of salt if you haven't actually read the book itself

Publishing, being the most captured of all the captured industries, is filled with captured writers, so I'm not suprised there are hordes of them jumping to applaud Dalcher's cancelling

Can't see your point re. Trans MPs etc, so what? People in positions of power nad/or academics are not immune from being childish and weepy

Also I can't see what you mean re Annalise Dodds. Any politician can say general waffly things about 'support' or 'breaking new ground' but what does that actually equate to?

I saw something by a trans person on X today where they pointed out that the definition of oppression is that there are no safe public toilets you have a right to use and feel safe in. I thought, that's what I've been saying about muslim women who are forbidden to use non sex segregrated facitilites. Trans entitlement is exclusive, and racist.

I can't follow what you're saying really. What do you mean by she's got 99% of her 9-5 right? - Tilly made one minor slip. No history of warnings from her employer. She is a champion at what she does - has sold literally 10000s of books.

I would take reviews of a book with a pinch of salt if you haven't actually read the book itself - The Guardian give pretty good reviews and I trust their appraisal. Have you read it? What's your take?

Publishing, being the most captured of all the captured industries, is filled with captured writers, so I'm not suprised there are hordes of them jumping to applaud Dalcher's cancelling - not sure what you mean here. I think those that are and are not allys of Trans people would probably like to know which publishers support which writers.

Can't see your point re. Trans MPs etc, so what? People in positions of power nad/or academics are not immune from being childish and weepy - the comment was on people who support trans / or ar trans being childish and weepy. That's incorrect given the example of a few people in demanding posts - NB - just an example.

Also I can't see what you mean re Annalise Dodds. Any politician can say general waffly things about 'support' or 'breaking new ground' but what does that actually equate to? - watch this space (no pun intended)

Feel free to share the link to the X post you are referring to if that helps.

Tinysoxxx · 09/07/2024 23:12

I can’t follow what you are saying humtum either but I am very much for correct data sets for accountability, like you. More evidence is definitely a good thing. In the absence of a consensus of opinion, you should look at facts and data.

Humtum, I couldn't make sense of your previous posts. The (n)etiquette here is to use the quote button or to copy-paste & bold format points from previous posters to which you're directly replying. It makes it easier to understand what you're trying to say.

GreenUp · 10/07/2024 03:33

Forgive my ignorance but what exactly is a "bookseller" in this context?

Is it a fancy name for a shop assistant at Waterstones or is it some kind of external role involving recommending books to Waterstones?
