I own a small business and if one of my (handful of) employees said they were going to rip up and destroy some of MY stock, before I'd sold it, and in fact made that threat to the manufacturer or supplier of said stock, they'd be out on their ear. Easy peasy.

In other news I trekked into town this morning to buy Femlandia by Christine Dalcher today. It was out of stock but they ordered it for me. I quite like dystopian fiction and it seems right up my alley.

I love it when stupid TRAs accidentally turn me on to something really good in GC land. I got my Terf is the New Punk t shirt that way.

idiots. ha ha ha.

I cannot read the text above..what does it say?

Sorry, didn't realise how badly the screenshot came out.

This is what it says:

"The author, Christina Dalcher, is a part of Seen in publishing, the anti trans group which was breathlessly reported on recently in the Bookseller. It appears the author may have used her Seen connections within the UK publishing industry to have Tilly fired. I'm not a lawyer but I'm wondering if Tilly has grounds for unfair dismissal here? Transphobia in UK publishing is rife and rotten to the very core."

It just struck me as a rather odd conspiracy theory. And highly unlikely.

Tilly’s ‘only job she’s ever loved’. She’s worked for them since August 2023. At weekends.

Edited

Crikey, how will they manage without her?

The irony of that post is that the shoe is usually on the other foot, and it is GC writers who have had a hard time getting published, and when they do - getting their books displayed in bookstores.

Yeah,bless them for trying though.

I really don't understand why Tilly's supporters/apologists don't seem to understand that as a representative of a retailer, it's a sackable offence to destroy stock belonging to the retailer. It's workplace theft.

All big organisations also have it in their employment contracts that it's a disciplinary offence to behave in such a way on social media as to bring the employer into disrepute.

Tilly can hardly be labouring under the delusion that it's a bookseller's job to ONLY sell books that the bookseller personally agrees with and doesn't find offensive. I mean if Tilly owned her own bookshop she could have a policy whereby she only sold books she liked, sure. I mean it's an unbelievably crap business model likely to lead to going bust within a year, but if that's what Tilly wanted to do with her own business, have at it.

But she could hardly think that was Waterstone's policy given that Waterstones retails Mein Kampf for £25 a pop.

DidYerAye · 11/07/2024 17:21

It appears the author may have used her Seen connections within the UK publishing industry to have Tilly fired. Transphobia in UK publishing is rife and rotten to the very core.

These two things can't be true at the same time. If transphobia is 'rife' why the need to have a network to support those with GC beliefs?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/07/2024 17:25

That awful Chocolat author has definitely participated in campaigns targeting women she doesn't agree with. What a hypocrite.

“breathlessly reported on”

😂

Femlandia was a good read. All her books her. I like how her fiction stories could easily be reality.

The annoying thing is, the tweets that seem to have offended Tilly and made her decide that Christime Dalcher is a transphobe were still out there whilst Tilly was promoting and gushing about her book and following her on Insta

Yeah, you really are not a lawyer.

"It's chestfeeding now" says a man. I'm sorry you have to put up with these people!

Edited

It's chestfeeding unless it's a transwoman producing hormone secretions, then it's definitely breast feeding....funny that.

FolkestoneMassive · 12/07/2024 15:43

Not believing people can change sex is not transphobia. I don’t believe in God but I’m not labelled Godphobic and my religious friends and colleagues don’t go round demanding I believe in God. Nor do they write to my employer to dob me in for my godlessness. That would be considered intrusive amd weird. The trans lobby is desperate to make belief in sex change a compulsory belief, that’s why they are creating a climate of fear for dissenters. The lobby is deeply authoritarian, homophobic and misogynistic. It’s a cult.

We don’t know precisely why that woman was sacked. I can’t believe those authors wrote in demanding Tilly gets her job back without knowing all the facts. What fools. Do they really want mob rule and for private contracts to no longer matter?

Are gender critical beliefs protected in law or not?

Appalonia · 12/07/2024 16:29

As a consequence of this debacle, I bought Vox ( v cheap on Kindle at the moment ). Currently half way through and it is excellent. And feels v current as it's about silencing women. Well worth a read! In fact I think I'm going to read all her books now.

Pinkkisugarmouse · 12/07/2024 18:21

What did she think would happen 🙄 If you work for a bookseller it’s not going to do you much good to threaten to destroy an authors work because you disagree with them. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Boo hoo 🎻😭

The hypocrisy of those calling for her reinstatement should surprise me but it doesn’t.
How many people been cancelled, no-platformed or sacked for the crime of saying humans can’t change sex or males shouldn’t be in women’s changing rooms, refuges, prisons or sports. Or that using un evidenced drugs on vulnerable children and adolescents is unethical? How many of these supporting this woman have bullied women and men who have dared express these views.

spannasaurus · 12/07/2024 20:00

She worked at Waterstones for less than a year and only worked weekends so I think that Waterstones probably just paid her in lieu of any notice that was due and told her she wasn't required back. I don't think they would have gone down a gross misconduct route when they were entitled to terminate the employment for any reason (except for p.c. discrimination)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/07/2024 20:04

Are gender critical beliefs protected in law or not?

They are, yes, under the Equality Act protected characteristic of religion or philosophical belief. Also it's protected to disbelieve in gender identity ideology, separately.
