I hadn’t heard of the author before and have just ordered two of her books - from Waterstones. Interestingly, Femilandia is out of stock, so it looks like I’m not the only one.

Femlandia is really good, I enjoyed it. All her books are.

I follow Tilly on Insta. I don't on twitter as I don't have it.

A few weeks ago she did a story/reel and it was her throwing a Christina Dalcher book into the bin and encouraging everyone to do the same because of the transphobic views of the author.

Then she did a story the other day naming the author and calling her hateful and that she had lost her job. She apologised to a publishing company that they still had to work with the author. This story was removed after 30 minutes, not the full 24 hours

She does a lot of book reviewing and receives advanced copies off publishers them encourages people to buy them from waterstones

I then found the authors tweets and have to say I don't disagree with any of them so I've since unfollowed Tilly.

Also, if Tilly believes Waterstones are supporting transphobic people, why the rallying of troops to get her her job back? She says everyone in her store supports her, that apparently people are going into warerstones in their droves to cancel their pre orders and are handing in letters and petitions. Why would you even want to work for this company if their values are something you are vehemently against?

If the author was in fact another employee and said she believes men shouldn't compete in women's sports and Tilly called her a transphobe, does she think there would be no come back or investigation?

What really irritates me is that these mediocre attention seekers succeed in getting attention off the back of more talented people.

BezMills · 11/07/2024 12:22

as far as I can tell she was a bit too successful in her attention-seeking and has therefore protected her twitter account to make a nice safe echo chamber

BezMills · 11/07/2024 12:23

She's a bit all over the place. Like some kid who hates their mum for getting grounded but still wants her pear all cutted up nicely.

Wouldn't that classify as defamation?

Calling someone a transphobe? I've honestly no idea.

I'm very vocal in my day to day life about women's rights and equality. I had a conversation at work with a female manager, deputy male manager and myself. They were both talking about how JK Rowling should be cancelled and all Harry Potter related things withdrawn and films banned etc.

I asked what had she said and the male said she had some very old fashioned views that no longer had a place in society. I asked for specific examples of what she said. The female deputy said basically, she is saying that a transwoman will never be a woman. I said that she wouldn't, she would never have periods, never breast feed (male interrupted me and said it's chest feeding now) and never go through menopause etc.

Female Manager said she was going to shut the conversation down now as the company doesn't support transphobes.

I later got called into the office with both of them and they said they had had a discussion and because it was an informal chat over lunch and I wasn't aware, they wouldn't be taking further action against my transphobic behaviour and if I continued to bait them, there would be serious consequences.

It's quite nice to see Waterstones standing up against behaviour like this

Authors ask Waterstones to rehire worker fired after tweet about gender-critical writer

”Over 500 industry professionals sign open letter to bookseller after employee’s post about ‘tearing up books’ by Christina Dalcher”

Again, why would you want to work for a company whose beliefs are so far from your own? Doesn't matter if your local store supports you, ultimately the polices and procedures are all the same and come from the same place.

EatMoreFibre · 11/07/2024 13:00

I'm not sure that Guardian article comes across as they intended.

They quote both sides which makes Tilly's comments sound shrill and irrational, CD look dignified and the 500 authors laughably poorly informed.

"It's chestfeeding now" says a man. I'm sorry you have to put up with these people!

CrossPurposes · 11/07/2024 13:11

Do any of these people supporting Tilly know that Christina Dalcher has actually been cancelled?

Luckily for CD she has support and hasn't needed to become a lorry driver.

Fuck them taking action against you. To describe talking about your lived reality as a woman as "baiting" is utterly discriminatory. They ought to be afraid of the action you could take against them.

He got sacked and I'm no longer there so it all worked out well (not related to the Jk Rowling discussion either!)

Cancelled how? I'd seen on her twitter I think that she had retired and wouldn't writing any more books, is that because of this?

The mob had already turned on me. My writing career is already over. I couldn’t get a publisher or agent if I was the last semi-literate person on earth (many say I am!). I’m happily retired."

i know! From what I saw of her video I thought she’d been putting in dedicated hours there 5 days a week for a decade!! Bloody hell I hope waterstones realise no good can come of rehiring her.

BaronMunchausen · 11/07/2024 13:44

What's the story behind the Metro's casual assertion that Christina Dalcher "published posts praising a Holocaust denier and doubting the French National Rally’s far-right credentials"?

I don't know about transphobe, but calling her a bigot seems to me to be very thin ice. Just as I was starting to get my hopes up for the Grauniad, too....

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 11/07/2024 15:05

I'm kind of fascinated by how this story has blown up.

Woman breaks company's social media policy, gets sacked from part time job she's had for less than a year.

How on earth is that something worth printing in the papers?

(I realise that perhaps there is some irony in me questioning if this is a newsworthy story while commenting on a thread about it and thus helping to perpetuate it and showing that I do find it at least mildly interesting.)

Also stumbled upon this and wondering why Tilly's supporters seem to be getting so unhinged over it.

Snivelling into the camera while calling an author a hateful bigot?
Yep. That's going to work...

Snivelling for the camera......extraordinary!
