Anneliese Dodds: what has happened to her?

Annelise Dodds was re-elected as MP in a safe seat and I had thought that she would be Minister for Women or similar. I can't find any reference to her as chair of the Labour Party or as Minister and I checked the Labour Party website etc.
I spotted her in a red dress* at the place outside where MPs were waiting to be called to see Starmer, having been summoned, but it was confusing because she was not allowed to go forward for a while when others were (or simply was early and had to wait). She didn't seem very happy about that).

*That's how I noticed her.

I saw this yesterday and was confused but encouraged- it seems she'd emailed before the election was called and SSAUK emailed back yesterday.

It appears SEEN in journalism incorrectly named her women and equalities minister, which they have now corrected.

Are SEEN in Journalism actually journalists? That's the second glaring error from them in a week. Whoever runs that account has an abysmal attention to detail, anyway.

Shortshriftandlethal · 06/07/2024 12:01

I suspect that Starmer is uncertain how to proceed with this appointment.......He knows what an emotive issue this remains, and needs to get it 'right'...however he perceives that. I've been wondering whether they would remove the word 'Woman' and just have it as the 'Equalities' - but this would signal a further erosion of women's concerns and protections - and so I think it may well be a bit of a hot potato.

What's the error? The first tweet posted by @WarriorN links to a bbc video of the first cabinet meeting where she's clearly seen, and the second one also shows her as part of the cabinet.

She's not in the photo of the first cabinet meeting on Mail Online - all the ministers are numbered and listed, she's not there. But I can see her white sleeve in the photo - she's been cropped off.

According to the BBC's Chief Political Correspondent: "Looks like Anneliese Dodds is attending cabinet as minister of state for development. That hasn’t been formally announced. Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, had been shadowing that role. Dodds was Labour’s shadow women and equalities minister — no-one has got that post yet"

All the SEEN accounts are run by the same small handful of people, none are specialists in any of the SEEN variations.

Really? How do you know?

Really? How do you know?

they don’t because that isn’t true

Rubidium · 06/07/2024 12:51

Women and Equalities is a ministerial brief, not a Secretary of State. They haven’t appointed the ministers yet. Anneliese Dodds is Labour Party Chair and probably has a seat at the cabinet table in that capacity without having a government department to run.

Of course it’s not, I just thought I’d give them the opportunity to further prove their ignorance.

PeppercornMill · 06/07/2024 13:17

Surely Starmer will appoint a man to the position of Women and Equalities?

Perhaps give Eddie Izzard a peerage so that he can serve in cabinet?

WarriorN · 06/07/2024 13:30

IMHO the title should be revised.

I sometimes wonder if "Women" should be attached to health. You'd still need some sort of equalities set up for everything else including women's pay etc, but it would help to centre the importance of women's health and the biological science behind it.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/07/2024 13:46

Starmer should give the job to Rosie Duffield

bellinisurge · 06/07/2024 13:49

Dodds is development sec according to BBC

The error was them stating she had been given the Women and Equalities brief, without it having been announced by the government.

zibzibara · 06/07/2024 15:14

They also claimed that Fergus Walsh of the BBC had blocked another journalist from emailing him, again with no evidence offered that he'd actually done that. The only screenshot they provided was cropped so you couldn't see the reason why the BBC mail system had rejected the email.

I was hoping she'd been dragged away by centaurs.

Can you imagine the testeria if that happened?

Love it!

cavalier · 06/07/2024 18:33

Rosie duffield deserves on honour for facing down that lot in Parliament.

Analiese Dodds .. not impressed whenever I’ve heard her talk
I’m assuming she I identifying as a woman?
These cretins must live on a different planet.
im telling myself 4 years minimum 🙏

Imnobody4 · 06/07/2024 19:32

This is bizarre. According to this she was at the first cabinet meeting.

During the cabinet meeting, Ms Dodds sat in front of a place card reading minister of state for development, however, this post has not yet been officially announced.

Do you think they're trying for a new Women's and Equalities Minister and no one wants it?

whether they would remove the word 'Woman' and just have it as the 'Equalities'

If Labour follow my union’s suggestion they may well change the Equalities brief (Committee) to become the ‘Liberation’ Minister. Which though repeatedly proposed at my union meetings has not yet been accepted but give it time.
