Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

What threads will FWR host in 6-12 months' time?

As women's sex based rights "never come up on the doorstep" and so on, and given the recent backtracking plus complete silence from Stonewall and co. Oh and the news that Harman might be heading the EHRC, I wondered what thread titles we might be seeing on here?

Concerns I can think of:

The stayed CPS consultation on sex by deception

The "spousal veto" (awful name) removal

Cass implementation or not

Sex Ed in schools

Changing/not changing the EQA

De facto marriage

What other things might we be having to discuss and organise over in the coming months and years?

Changing the law to make "stirring up hatred" on the grounds of transphobia a crime on a par with other protected strands like racism. It currently isn't.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/07/2024 19:34

Puberty blocker emergency legislation being made permanent (or not).

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 03/07/2024 19:48

Maybe even something devious to curb MN overall?

In Scotland its rumoured there will be rules that mean trans prisoners xant be named or discussed, though I'm not sure what that will entail. SPS continue to treat women as second class citizens.

It may be worth considering making and strengthening non-public networks as I expect curbs on speech and expression.

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 03/07/2024 19:51

That's made me think: I suppose GRR V2.0 and the government doing nothing to stop it.

Oh another one: something about "bodily autonomy" as a fig leaf for commercial surrogacy. And "assisted dying" (they'll call it that).

And if voting aged 16 comes in, they'll look to lower the age of consent. And the protections for children at those ages (social care etc) will be removed too.

I suspect that this is high on someone's list. May be we will all be in the clink, sharing our "prison picky bits". 😕

Polis kicked my door in & carted me off for wrong thing x 1000

Igmum · 03/07/2024 20:18

I was worrying about this today.

Not implementing the Cass Review.

Children with mental health difficulties still pushed into permanently mutilating their bodies.

The Triumph of the TRAs.

No single sex rape crisis shelters/groups/support.

TW securing even more awards, sports records and celebrations.

Fucking Gilead.

Igmum · 03/07/2024 20:21

On the bright side sounds like prison is going to be a fun place to be. I'll see you all on the Mumsnet wing for mahoosive salads and chickens that keep an entire floor in roast dinners and sandwiches for a week.

Toseland · 03/07/2024 20:22

Concerns I can think of:

  • surrogacy
  • the trend for celebrities 'leading the way' on wearing virtually nothing
  • egg farming
  • asexuality
  • having to escort all your children to the toilet to provide some sort of safeguarding (a nightmare for young mums)
  • gay men demanding entitlement to 'breeders'
  • single men buying babies
qwerty14 · 03/07/2024 20:33

More stupidity and weisil words.

Hate crime legislation and convictions for women who call transwomen men.

More trans propaganda in schools.

An attempt to impose the definition of woman to include trans through international courts and backdoor legislation.

Ah can you imagine aibu in two years.
Defacto married, how, when,where.
How can I not be defacto married?
Should I throw my lovely partner out because married by default?
How can i protect my house from default marriage?

Etc etc

Someone dogged will eventually start to request the Charity Commission's progress and work on the Mermaids report.

Then it'll get buried.

I might be being naive, but I like to think the threads will reflect our organised planning of counter moves on a national scale. (Learning maybe from the spin used by those who inserted themselves into our spaces in the first place.) We will need ALL women to see what is happening, including the ones who are captured.

OvaHere · 03/07/2024 21:12

I'm going to predict something positive (because we need some hope).

A few more Labour women emboldened by being in government with a strong majority and safer seat will find their voice to speak up about this absolute nonsense meaning Rosie Duffield is no longer a lone voice.

I think normal people will riot in frustration at bonkers new laws, and ultimately, give the police and govt all the reasons they need to disband democracy and take us into dictatorship.

Then again, I'm an optimist. Maybe it won't be that good....

Swashbuckled · 03/07/2024 21:58

I think we need to bring back the captured women.

The ones I know have lots of energy to campaign for trans rights, to influence on social media and in workplaces, and seem to have lots of spare time for expressing this passion. They see themselves as “right on”.

If they can come to see the degree to which their own sex has been devalued in this process, and see themselves as the new (ha!) underdog, they could offer much.

We need a social media wizard team, who could also set up the spoiled vote website that @iwanttoretire spoke about, to put the truth back out there.

Rioting would be good too, but it’s seen as a bit risky for some.

Slothtoes · 03/07/2024 22:07

Some of these don’t seem likely. Why would lowering voting age (a terrible idea) have anything to do with lowering age of consent to sex? (Also a terrible idea). On what evidence would age of consent be lowered?

I’d be worried about liberalising laws around surrogacy in the UK as proposed a few years ago by the law commission- there were several threads on this but then it all went quiet.

I’d be very worried if in a new government’s rush to address UK’s low productivity and virtually stagnant economic growth that they watered down commitments to provide single sex toilets at work, to save employers costs.

I’d be worried if the Equality Act isn’t reviewed to clarify where biological sex is meant vs sex stereotypes or ‘gender’

I don’t expect any government to go near the GRA in reality. Even though it should be repealed and the equality act used to ensure fairness instead. I think there will be no wish from politicians to touch GRA once they are actually in government, way too controversial. Too many other very urgent things demanding attention after the Tories have sadly ground the economy the NHS, schools and public services down so hard.
