How do you register a protest vote if you don't agree with any of the candidates' positions? I'm all ears

You might be all ears, but I did not offer to instruct you how to register a protest vote. I simply pointed out that spoiling your ballot paper does not register a protest vote and anyone advising you that it does is wrong. Statistical information from spoiled ballot papers is not collated; they are simply counted - protest votes, errors, those making a lame joke - as spoiled ballot papers and destroyed. There is no conduit to register a protest vote because there is nothing to protest. You are asked to choose a representative. You are given a number of candidates to choose from. You can either cast your vote for one or abstain. Frankly, you're not a child, you know this. Why you think my stating something that has been the case for some hundred years supplies you with some kind of "gotcha" is beyond me. I gave a piece of truthful information. You chose to be hostile and challenging.

How can anyone ruin the economy more than it already is? Johnson took the limping economy into the back garden and shot it with an "oven ready brexit deal"! 😂

Labour"s stance is no single market, no customs union. It will "seek a much better deal".

It can seek all it likes, but unless there are great advantages for the EU - much the stronger party - there will be no deal. Oh, and one of the EU's red lines is that any deal must come under the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.

CassieMaddox · 27/06/2024 18:04

Meh. Brexit irrelevant. I followed the advice "you lost, get over it".
Just get a healthy dose of schadenfreude at the Tories reaping what they sowed, despite valiant efforts to pretend they are somehow credible 😂

It's people who were on fixes that started pre-Truss
You are massively clutching at straws if you think Truss had no effect. Most of us saw what happened to our mortgages. Mine is almost double what it was - I came off a fix 2 months after her fuck up out of nowhere

You can fix a new rate 6 months before your old one expires, so you dropped the ball there.

“you can either cast your vote or abstain”. If you abstain by staying away the assumption is that you are not engaged in the political process. Spoilt ballots aren’t counted as votes for any of the candidates, so essentially operate as an abstention. No not everyone will have spoiled their ballots deliberately, but for those who want to register that they have voted (which has canvassing implications for subsequent elections) but don’t fancy any of the choices it offers a way to register their disapproval of the choices offered.

If you don’t believe me you can look at the constituencies with above average numbers of spoilt papers. In the last 2 elections these have been the constituencies of the speakers. Voters spoilt papers to register a protest at having little choice of candidate due to the convention of major parties not opposing them.

There was also the study carried out by Reading University following particularly high numbers of spoilt papers in PCC elections. Considered to be a protest against the elections.

Adult women don’t need advice on how to register a protest generally. They can engage with political system any way they want to without being gently patted on the head and told they don’t really understand

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 27/06/2024 18:17

Well, I won’t be voting Reform or Tory, the only parties that will protect women only spaces, and to fight on women need education, good health , a roof over our heads and the occasional burst of central heating.

I’m voting Labour but I have told my candidate and my local Cllrs that for my vote they owe me recognition of my sex and respect for my rights. They agreed … so I will be watching them like a hawk.

OK. So you watch them and they don't give you the recognition of your sex and respect for your rights you thought they'd agreed to, what do you do? You can't retract your vote, the election is over.

Obviously I realise that.

All I can do is write and challenge and say they do not represent my views every time they betray women.

I’m not voting Tory or Reform, I’m just not.

Labour will get in in my area, by a big majority.

Obviously like everyone else I did not know Truss was going to calamitously fuck the economy 6 months earlier! And I was on a fix I'd have to pay to end. Like millions of people.

But you don't pay to end it. You fix a rate which starts when the rate you're on ends. So you dropped the ball. You didn't need to be psychic, just proactive about getting a new rate locked in as soon as you could.

CassieMaddox · 27/06/2024 18:59

fluffy is this about defending Truss, having a pop at me or being morally superior? My mortgage T&Cs are precisely of no relevance or interest to anyone 🤣

There was no warning of Truss' economic meltdown. Blaming individuals for not being as organised as you seems a bit bizarre!

I'm just pointing out that you dropping the ball meant you're paying more for your mortgage than you need to.

But there you go, insinuating I'm defending Truss. 🥱 😴

You were disorganised and not proactive. You're paying the price now. It's fact, not a judgment! Sorry if you're offended by the truth.

OK so it was just having a pop. Good to know. I'm not offended. Just find it a bit weird that you'd choose to make that point about an issue that's royally screwed over millions in this country.

OK so Boris fucked the economy with his 'oven ready' Brexit and Truss caused an horrendous interest rate spike with the budget from hell. Were they also responsible for the collapse of the German and French economies and similar interest rate rises at the same time?

Asking for a friend.

I find it flipping hilarious anyone would defend her. It is not a controversial view. We all know she catastrophically fucked it. 😂

I already have a bridge. It came with the house that we were given as a wedding present.

Meanwhile, how do you explain the fact that the German and French economies have not performed any better than the UK economy and the only reason that their mortgage rates are 0.4% lower than ours is because east European economies are not suffering the same rate of inflation?

DrBlackbird · 27/06/2024 20:37

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 27/06/2024 11:04

It's her decision but it's wishful thinking. Starmer probably doesn't really care that much either way and he'd probably like to edge back over a golden bridge towards common sense but he isn't going to get the chance. The Labour party can't "jump", they aren't going to play nicely on this, the leadership have made contradictory half-promises to both sides and they wont be able to keep the ones they made to women. Rosie Duffield is the canary in the coalmine

On the day we get red circles drawn in green ink the Labour party will bring us women-only spaces and self-id.

This ^

Starmer’s response in the last debate with Rishi really sealed it for me. I was genuinely surprised and even taken aback at his answer to the question about protecting single sex spaces and women’s rights. To turn that comment back to ‘respecting everyone’ and then make a comment about Brianna Grey as part of his answer was both despicable and indicative, to me, of his thinking.

I genuinely believe that Starmer thinks the GC side is just as bad or worse and that it is just a matter of being kind and budging up to allow men who feel they’re a woman into women’s spaces and everyone would then be ‘respectful’. I just feel so despairing of how little men give a shit about women.

For goodness sake Cassie. Don’t bite on Truss. It is universally acknowledged that she was the most incompetent PM ever and that’s saying a lot. She’s irrelevant to the conversation now.

I agree with her that Labour are trying to edge back across the bridge and they should just jump.

What I like about it is her clearly explaining her thought process about what she objects to but why she is still voting Labour. It's nice to have a more public person doing it in words and I found it quite validating of my own position so I thought others might too

This is what I've been seeing, but I know there are lots of people who don't want to lose the wedge issue!

No matter who wins, we are not going to be finished with this campaign for women's rights. Kemi and Rosie can't save us on their own, we need to keep pulling regardless.

Kemi has just piggybacked on other womens hard work and is more of a hindrance than a help. I'm really hoping we see the back of her next week.

For me assuming Labour win, the focus has to be on the GRA reform and making it very clear there that "legal woman" =/= biological woman. That will then allow the EA exemptions to be implemented properly.

It’s not about ‘losing the wedge issue’, it’s about really listening to what senior labour politicians say, and carefully reading their manifesto.

There is no commitment to women’s rights, not even a commitment to fully acting on the Cass review to protect children.

You are correct that this fight will continue after the election, but the Labour Party look set to change legislation which will dismantle the case law we have been building. This won’t just mean ‘toilets’ - this is about eg:
being free to express a GC opinion - and eg not be fired or arrested for it
being able to request a same-sex HCP, and still get healthcare
parents being allowed to not immediately affirm their gender-questioning children, and being able to demand the same of their school
allowing counselling and cognitive exploration of gender (conversion therapy 🙄)

Of course people have to balance the impact of their vote in the round, but if you’re banking on women’s rights and child safeguarding being protected under labour, you need to consider very carefully why you think that

I'm not interested in (non-) virtue-signalling to impress the beardyleftydudebros who have decided what's important,

I hardly think Professor STock is at all interested in virtue signalling, let aloe to beardyleftydudebros. This is a woman who had masked protestors at her workplace every day, and still needs security when she speaks at public events.

What have you done for the cause of women's & girls' rights?
