I voted labour with my postal vote. The trans issue is important to me but the nhs, education, housing, poverty, disability benefits are all more important.
I think anything except voting labour (the only party who can oust the tories) would have been cutting off my nose to spite my face.

I can't say fairer than that. You weigh things up, and cast your vote accordingly. That's all anyone could ask.

I think it's great that mighty mighty FWR are holding labour's feet to the fire here. I'm not sure whether SKS is frit, lazy or just doesn't think women are worth much.

What people don't seem to realise is that they won't be voting Labour as the Labour Party doesn't exist any more.

They will be voting Stonewall and all the other Activists in.

I suspect you may be right. These are scary times to live in.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/06/2024 14:09

Great woman with so much integrity. Always interesting to read her thought processes.
Such a shame that Labour have behaved so appallingly to women, bullying, harassing and silencing to the extent that so many women feel they can no longer vote for them. And don't get me started on their woeful approach to safeguarding children.
Muppets.

Maybe she also has a Labour candidate she likes, trusts and respects; many of us don't.

This is interesting because she used to live in Lewes, which means if she hasn't moved she's in a Tory/LibDem marginal, so it'll probably make no odds any way

If she still lives there, then maybe her priority is a change of government and she feels her vote might have more influence than that of someone in a safe Labour seat?

She'd be more likely to secure a change of government* by voting tactically for the Lib Dems to remove the Tory. Labour got less than 6% of the vote last time.

*Although change of government probably a foregone conclusion

That is absolutely spot on. Trans lobbies made a beeline for labour many years ago, with plenty of donations. Nothing of the true Labour Party that my ancestors voted for even exists now.

It is sad when I read posts like this, and to see the disillusionment that is guaranteed to set in if Labour do win. People seem to have fallen for this campaign- even knowing there isn’t the money to change any of those things listed. Labour have even said they don’t intend to increase the budgets for any of those areas listed, so why vote for false hope and lies? And trade in your human rights as a woman in the process. It makes no sense to me, but I guess they have peddled the illusion of a gold pot at the end of rainbow no end, and we all know it isn’t fiscally possible. The anger when people discover they have been hoodwinked is going to be immense.

That’s why reform have set up shop - they know what’s coming. God help us.

It certainly worked for them when they were donating to and profiting from the Tory government.

Thanks for this. My labour candidate has ignored all my emails (except the one i sent from a different account -accidentally- to ask if my emails weren't being recieved) despite being in a seat which is extremely close this time. This interview has helped me feel less aggrieved...a bit...I was in two minds about spoiling my vote.

You remind me of my ex-FIL who used to write letters to Margaret Thatcher every week. After the first few polite responses from an aide, they were all ignored, much to FILs anger. He couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t write back personally each week. It’s only one letter after all…

Am I the only one who thinks leftybeardydudebros is my new favourite word?

I'm voting Labour because what's the alternative. Not massively impressed with Keir and his stance on trans stuff and women's rights but overall I have more important things to vote on. Like you know, homelessness, poverty, the NHS... things that need to be sorted to keep people alive?

I'm guessing that a significant number of voters will be "least worst" voters. And that's across the political spectrum, not just Labour voters.

Yes! I've been an adult long enough to remember the difference in the country pre and post 1997. The quick and fairly dramatic decline in rough sleeping in the city I'd been a student in for a couple of years. The end of headlines about people dying on trolleys. And the end of particularly lurid headlines about toe sucking and other sexual shenanigans.

I didn't even like the Blair government and never voted Labour at that time. What's come since (especially since the coalition) is what's changed my mind. 2 Tory governments when I've been an adult, both of which have destroyed the country for an ideology that doesn't work.

I'm not expecting miracles no. I'm not thick. And I'm not a great fan of Labour in its present form. But there's no fecking way I'm voting Tory and Bristol Central is pretty much a Labour safe seat so it makes no odds really.

The other option is Green (Carla Denyer is my local candidate) so I'm debating. What would you suggest, since I'm so naive?

Ps maybe try not to be so patronising to other women when you have no idea of their credentials and are trying (apparently) to stand up for women.

Shortshriftandlethal · 27/06/2024 15:06

Within the next couple of years many people on currently cheap fixed rate mortgages will find they will come to an end....that will be a shock for many, especially if interest rates remain as high as they are now. Plus the Junior doctors are saying that unless Labour agrees to a 35% pay rise they will continue to strike......

Labour is going to have to contend with a whole basket of issues and on the same spending schedule and financial commitments as the Tories...I suspect a lot of people are going to be feeling very let down this time next year.... waiting for the good times to return.

Aren't some of the opinion polls suggesting a Green win? I think in that constituency Labour (Thangam) is definitely the least worst option.

Shortshriftandlethal · 27/06/2024 15:08

Yes, Thangam would be the best bet for sure.

There is no government at this time, parliament has been prorogued for the past 4 weeks until the new government is voted in.

I probably will go for Thangam tbh, Carla is just a bit of a wild card choice! I didn't expect the Greens to do so well in the local elections. I've voted for Thangam for the last ten years and I like her and her policies so will probably go for her again

WolfFoxHare · 27/06/2024 15:14

All anyone can do (including Stock and JKR) is vote according to their conscience. Some leftist GC people will vote Labour to be sure of getting the Tories out, because of the damage the Tories have done in the past 14 years to public services. Others will worry more about the potential damage Labour could do to women's rights. You've just got to weigh up what matters more to you, and neither is right or wrong.

I'm not going to listen to anyone telling me how I "should" vote, I'm going to make my own mind up about my priorities.

On mortgages that's already hit many of us. Thanks to Liz and Kwarteng's budget, our repayment mortgage went up 40% when our fixy ended last November.
