I am pleased there has been more fuss than the Dutch presumed there would be, for the little girl he groomed and flew out to rape, and girls everywhere, who, in some people’s minds, count for less than some raping jock’s sporting prowess and potential medal.

“ Volley Ball/ Van de Velde/Paris Olympics 2024” will always show that he committed this crime now I think.

Someone else who is an excellent player could have taken his place. He was not worthy of the Olympics.

Fruityful · 28/07/2024 16:19

According to the Mail he was sentenced in the UK and served all but the final month in the UK before being sent back to Holland for the remainder. So the Dutch shouldn't be picking this guy to represent them but how in the Hell did we only give him one year for this? He actually went through with it, did he? He actually had full intercourse with the child?

Chersfrozenface · 28/07/2024 16:27

He was sentenced to four years in the UK. But as a PP has noted, he had flown back to the Netherlands. He refused to come to the UK to face justice and had to be extradited. Part of the extradition terms were that he would be sent back to the Netherlands to complete his sentence if found guilty. After one year in prison he was indeed sent back to NL per the agreement. At which point the Dutch authorities just released him.

This is what The Times said ( my bolding):

”..the victim of a then 19-year-old Van de Velde was a 12-year-old girl from Milton Keynes. After admitting to rape, in full knowledge of her age, Van de Velde was sentenced in 2016 to four years in prison. He served 12 months in a British jail before being transferred to the Netherlands, where he was released after a further month.“

He was not released to the Netherlands to go free. He was supposed to carry out his sentence in prison there.

It was the Dutch who let the British girl, and our justice system down.

Other posters have pointed out an additional very important point which was, that in the sentencing, the Judge took it as a forgone conclusion that this conviction would mean the end of his career, and so an important part of his punishment.

That he served one year instead of four, and carried on volley ball as normal to end up in the Olympics is a travesty.!

Further to men in sports who shouldnt be there, another thread has started
'TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”
As usual we have Reduxx to thank for the reporting.
My view is we should flood IOC with complaints.
Both are an utter disregard for womens comfort dignity or safety.

Beowulfa · 29/07/2024 10:15

Front page of today's Metro.

If the IOC are ok with a convicted child rapist competing, they should be answering questions in the media tent like every other athlete.

Because he has served his sentence.

but we accept that, for certain crimes, serving a sentence is not enough to protect the public. that's why we have the sex offenders register. the principle of having 'served your sentence' is not absolute. also, sex offences are strongly recidivist crimes so it's highly likely he'll do it again, if he hasn't already. Again, another reason why we have a register of sex offenders

I bet he bloody doesn’t! Pity he never thought about that before sleeping with a 12 year-old!

he didn't sleep with her. he raped her. more than once

'I know 12-year-olds who are sassy and act like they're 16-year-old girls.'

She then added: 'It [the rape] actually sounds like an inappropriate, very inappropriate, romance thing.'

She also claimed the Olympian had 'turned his life around' since the conviction and believed calling him a child rapist was 'a bit strong' and not language she would use to describe him.

Ms Woolf added: 'If I was judged for everything I did between the age of 12 and 19, I'd probably be in prison or something serious.'

What on earth is wrong with that woman?

Milton Keynes Citizen
March 2016
Excerpt,

Sentencing him, Judge Francis Sheridan said: “You were a hugely talented athlete who enjoyed the adulation of the crowd but you also have a dark side and it is that that brought you to court.

^“Prior to coming to this country you were training as a potential Olympian. Your hopes of representing your country now lie as a shattered dream.*

“Your actions in those two days in England have wrecked your life and you could, had you never come to England and committed these offences, have been a leader in your sport.

How wrong the judge turned out to be.

And to think that he also only served one year of four year sentence.

Dear God. I hope she doesn’t have a daughter. The extent to which Emma doesn’t understand the issue here is quite staggering.

Its also incredibly (deliberately) misleading. The wording almost implies he was sentenced "regardless of the fact she consented", thats not what it says but it is the impression it gives if you read it quickly.... It misses out the key detail that he got her drunk first in order to lower her boundaries. I mean, its sort of irrelevant anyway because she was twelve.
Under Dutch law by the way I think the age of consent is 16, but its only considered automatic rape is the child is under 12. But 12 is still minor. (It is... interesting that he talked to her online for two years right up to the point that it became a less serious crime under Dutch law to have sex...)

So yeah, it implies she gave consent and then talks about Van De Velde's age right after. It is sort of like "ahhh, a quirky technicality of English law." It is the sort of minimisation you see people do when its older children that are groomed (e.g. 15) but to see them try it with a 12 year old. Urgh.

@biscuitandcake
I was just reading a 2016 report about the court case and it said that he corresponded with her for several months before flying over to see her.

Where did you see it easy two years?

I hope she doesn't have a son! We have no hope if boys are being raised by parents with such appalling attitudes.

re “Ms Woolf added: 'If I was judged for everything I did between the age of 12 and 19, I'd probably be in prison or something serious.'”

Idiotic

“12 - 19” - being a 12 year old groomed child is the opposite of being a 19 year old child rapist. So why would she be in ‘prison
or something serious’ for something she’d done age 12?

Of all the mistakes most young people make, fairly rarely is it rape of a child. It does happens though. Watch out for leaving a child alone among teenage boys - but is she condoning it?

This was premeditated rape by a man 7 years older than the 12 year old child they raped.

At least his Wikipedia page is this
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/StevenvandeVelde

He was moved to serve his sentence in the Netherlands where the laws are different so he was out after a year. Fucking hell, Netherlands. You arses.
The Olympics can fuck off as far as I’m concerned.
