It did come up. Sunak was great on this - Starmer lied and obfuscated as usual.

I agree. I am still frustrated I don’t think I’ve heard a challenge to starmer on his choice of words like safe spaces or women’s spaces, when the question posed often refers to single sex spaces. I also want starmer to define ‘gender’….like a lawyer, you know, carefully and precisely.

Labour reminds me of an abusive boyfriend. It's that kind of dynamic in their relationship with women.

Very hard no, if they're like this now it'll be 100x worse once they're in power.

Women and children are in for a bumpy ride.

I worked for many years in training and we used to have to do self assessment processes on our service. All the training staff would get into a room and we'd go through the form and just say what we thought we had to say to get through the process.

That's what Starmer reminded me of. Just words to fill a box on a form.

Has anyone noticed that Dawn Butler (Lab) agrees with Tennant. Not all black women agree with Badenoch, she has said (sorry, on news last night with interview of shadow education minister, so it's reported) and she herself stands with Tennant. I am guessing that many black women agree with Badenoch on sex segregated spaces, so Butler is wrong about that aspect of their agreement, I would think.

I don't think Butler is a deep thinker. She is entitled to her views on gender, of course, but if she'd been capable of even thinking a little bit about what she's saying, she'd have realised she's endorsing the idea that it's fine for a white man to tell a Black woman to shut up, and fine for him to publicly wish she'd stopped existing. This obviously makes it much harder for her in future to complain about sexism and racist comments directed towards her.

I missed it, what did he say?

Sunak was clear that sex should mean biological sex and single sex spaces are needed. He said that the Equality Act should be amended to say this. Only way to exclude men with certificates in my opinion.
Starmer said one the one hand that yes he agreed about 'safe' spaces for women but no need to amend the Equality Act as the exemption clause will be used but made no ref to GRCs which is what the questioner was asking about.

They're obviously all dreadful wacists. I wouldn't take a peek outside your echo chamber. You'll find out that she's not all that popular. Yeah I know! They're all woman hating wacists. They can't see Kemi for the cognitive Goliath she truly is.

Guardian readers have been left utterly uninformed by their newspaper. One wonders if they even realise that they are agreeing with David Tennant, that his son has no sex.

One of the biggest shocks to me STILL is that I used to be an ardent Labour supporter. I could see misogyny of course - unions etc - but it is so blatant now and something to be seemingly proud of.

What the fuck happened to them?

Agreed, she's not very bright.

The GRA. Once you have that you need to spend a lot of time shoring up a house of cards with threats and insult

Because it’s really poor legislation with bad outcomes for women and children

It’s easy to see, but invested groups get very angry / aggressive when people don’t believe in that falsehood

I'm half regretting that eddie izzard didn't succeed in his bid to be a candidate. It would have given us all a real life example of the kind of man we are expected to accommodate.

Its easy for politicans to talk about the vulnerabilities of men with gender when the men they want to be in public toilets and changing rooms arent present. The realty isnt men who would be easily mistaken for women or who are particularly sympathetic to women.

Tennant, who is 14 years older than his wife who he met on set whilst she was playing his daughter, thinks this act of virtue signalling makes him look inclusive and accepting

Yeuch.

I mean, he was supposed to be a Time Lord and 1000 years old or so, he certainly didn't look old enough for her to be his daughter.

I want to take tippex to the repeated "public" in the cartoon.

I think maybe Tennant has misjudged the public reaction on this somewhat.

Though I suspect it won't make him rethink.

Those comments from the Guardian readers are wild. I think they've really driven away any of their more intelligent readers.

Yes - the one who was also whooping and screaming in the audience when Starmer spoke?

I don't understand the relevance that Tennant is 14 years older than his wife. This is fine, and not that rare either.

Bit of a tangent but I’ve noticed that current day older teens/young adults are a lot less tolerant of age gap relationships than previous generations.

Youtubers have had near-cancellations for 2 year age gaps (19-17) let alone 14.

37-23, whilst obvs both adults is deffo considered a bit off to a significant proportion of people (and doesn’t meet the traditional ‘no younger than half your age+ 7 sniff test!)

I think his mask slipped.

As a lefty at heart, what trans rights activism has revealed to me is just how misogynistic the left are, I didn't see it before, maybe a result of my own bias.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 27/06/2024 10:36

What a contrast David Tennant's "allyship" makes with J K Rowling's. David Tennant wears a badge at events. J K Rowling deliberately put herself (and her team of legal experts) between gender critical women and the worst bits of the new "Hate Crime amd Public Order" Act in Scotland. Most people don't realise she took a real personal risk to protect Scottish women.

I do think Tennant's at least as good an actor as J.K.Rowling is a writer - she aces plot and character but her prose can be clunky and she's so successful nowadays her editors seem to be afraid to fix it. Whereas he gave a spine-chillingly convincing performance as the unbeliever whose self-interest draws him deeper and deeper into Nazism and the betrayal of his greatest friend.

Anwyay, I know who'd I rather have as my ally.

Yes that was something. It goes some way to understanding why we are where we are. A whooper will cut through to Starmer whereas he can ignore all the women speaking up.

He’s very good at the creepy roles.

The mini series where he plays a family annihilator, murdering his wife and children and setting the house on fire as a cover up is particularly awful.

In the play he wasn't creepy. He was ordinary, vulnerable. Just a bit selfish and cowardly, no more than most of us. That was the point of the play and he did it very well.
