Ah, he always used to come across as a lovely warm person.

I think attacking an individual personally - rather than their opinions - is almost always a bad idea. It's bad because it suggests you're not a very nice person and it also suggests that you are not able to argue your case on its own merits.

Does it matter that Kemi Badenoch is a black woman? Would it have been OK if he'd attacked a white man? Well, no, it wouldn't have been OK if he'd made the same unpleasant remarks about (say) Jeremy Hunt. But yes, it does look worse when it's a Black woman, because of the long historical tradition of men trying to silence women (witch trials etc) and of white people persecuting Black people, through slavery, violence, rape and denying them basic civil rights. That's the context that makes a white man telling a Black woman to shut up particularly grotesque.

It's interesting that an apparently intelligent person like Tennant couldn't see that.

She's a cognitive Goliath. She should have replaced the Queen. In fact Charles is racist for not not giving her the opportunity.

The Conservatives are racist and woman hating for not appointing her as leader. Her constituents are racist for not thinking much of her. They probably abuse their children too.

The woman can't put a step wrong.

Not an answer just PA response

Kucinghitam · 26/06/2024 09:22

I'm so very educated by the Righteous responses, especially this morning's explanations and deflections. Please, keep going. You are doing sterling work for The Right Side of History.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/06/2024 09:23

cupcaske123 · 26/06/2024 09:18

I've already answered the question. As you were.

No you haven't. You've deflected with PA rubbish. I'm used to that tactic and can spot it a mile off, DM used it all the time. It meant that she didn't have an answer and was just ranting (pretty much par for the course with DM).

SiriAlexa · 26/06/2024 09:29

What is also appalling is the cheers from the audience when he said those words. Racist, misogynistic and so arrogant!

ThePoshUns · 26/06/2024 09:30

When someone shows you who they are believe them. Who the hell does he think he is?

theilltemperedclavecinist · 26/06/2024 09:31

sundaysathome · 26/06/2024 09:02

can those who loathe Kemi and what she stands for, say what they loathe?

I didn't like it when she whipped up a Twitter storm against a young journalist who had emailed a question to her press office.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/jan/29/minister-kemi-badenoch-under-fire-over-tweets-about-journalist-who-sent-her-questions

I agree with her about the Equality Act.

People contain multitudes.

Minister under fire over tweets about journalist who sent her questions

Kemi Badenoch published questions sent to her office and accused reporter of ‘making up claims’

Some of these comments are bleak. Kemi is my local MP and she is dreadful, absolutely dreadful. She votes in her own interest and what will advance her career, nothing to do with anyone’s wellbeing. Hopefully we will vote her out come 4th July.

That may be the case.
But Tennant is still wishing a woman not to exist (ie to die)
That's bleaker.

Teddleshon · 26/06/2024 09:34

Yes I’d genuinely like to know what posters mean about Kemi Badenoch being incompetent and loathed - leaving her GC views to one side, what are these other issues?

Rightsraptor · 26/06/2024 09:40

Yes,@mrstrickland, I have on occasions told people to shut up, usually my kids when they were being bloody irritating.

They were younger people I had authority over, not government ministers in my own age group.

And I wasn't all dressed up, accepting an award at a public event with the press watching, either.

Tennant is a fool.

Rightsraptor · 26/06/2024 09:42

SiriAlexa · 26/06/2024 09:29

What is also appalling is the cheers from the audience when he said those words. Racist, misogynistic and so arrogant!

And also highly partisan, don't forget that. He was preaching to the converted.

RoyalCorgi · 26/06/2024 09:45

I didn't like it when she whipped up a Twitter storm against a young journalist who had emailed a question to her press office.

I didn't either. You don't have to like someone to grasp that it's wrong to state publicly that they should shut up and/or stop existing.

RantyRantington · 26/06/2024 09:46

mrstrickland · 26/06/2024 08:07

It's like a watching a pack of hyenas on this thread. Do any of you think for yourselves?

(have none of you ever told someone to shut up before.....?)

We all think for ourselves, that's why there are many here calling out abusive behaviour and exploitation of children, and articulating why we think it is so.

You need to try and engage your own brain. Given your brief and sneery contribution that may well be a struggle for you.

Projectme · 26/06/2024 09:48

Mylovelygreendress · 25/06/2024 13:47

To think I used to like him .

me too. I'm a bit gutted tbh

wrens23498 · 26/06/2024 09:49

Loving the comments on the article though. Looks like most people see past his (admittedly lovely) fancy jacket.

yourhairiswinterfire · 26/06/2024 09:49

The woman can't put a step wrong.

Don't be ridiculous, of course she can.

It's just not acceptable to single out a woman and state you want her to 'not exist anymore' (whilst bleating on about how kind you are) because you disagree with her politics and opinions.

It's possible to disagree with or even not like Kemi whilst also acknowledging that Tennant targeting her like that is shitty.

JammyJellyfish · 26/06/2024 09:50

I wish we would stop sexualising children & allow them to have a childhood rather than having adults trends pushed onto them by their attention seeking parents.

“I wish politicians like Kemi Badenoch (and maybe insert more) would stop using the trans community to score political points” or “would be less inflammatory with their language” or “could try and have more understanding of queer people”. Any of those would have made his point without wishing someone didn’t exist and would just shut up.

Obviously I’d still reserve the right to consider him an acting dullard and not even in the top 2 Dr Whos.

INeedAPensieve · 26/06/2024 09:59

And again for those at the back not paying attention:-

A very privileged, rich man stood up on a public platform to accept an award; during his acceptance speech he expressed a wish that a female MP should not exist and wanted her to shut up.

This female MP may have views that many of us on here disagree with (I know I do), but in light of all the threats that female MPs experience as part of public life (and the fact that a female MP was murdered during a previous election campaign), this was a very unwise, stupid thing to do.

I feel chilled by this, I feel that he is no different to the Andrew Tates and Nigel Farages of this world; it is deeply embedded misogyny of the highest order and because he is who he is, this man will not be held to account.

So I and many others have come onto Mumsnet to express our dismay, our fear and our disgust at this behaviour. This is not about political affiliations. This is about calling out misogyny, regardless of who is doing it.

MaidOfAle · 26/06/2024 10:00

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 26/06/2024 03:18

he did, actually, make a supportive statement about trans rights

“I suppose if I’m honest I’m a little depressed by the fact that acknowledging that everyone has the right to be who they want to be and live their life how they want to live it as long as they’re not hurting anyone else should merit any kind of special or award or special mention because it’s common sense, isn’t it?” Tennant said in his speech. “It’s human decency. We shouldn’t live in a world where that is worth remarking on. However until we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn’t exist anymore — I don’t wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up — whilst we do live in this world I am honoured to receive this.”

he didnt just step up, slag off Kemi and then leave....

He could have said any of the following:

  • "However until we wake up and Kemi Badenoch isn't in government any more"
  • "However until we wake up in that world"

But he chose to say that he doesn't want her to exist, saw how that went down, and hastily backtracked.

MaidOfAle · 26/06/2024 10:02

Projectme · 26/06/2024 09:48

me too. I'm a bit gutted tbh

I've seen him at RSC and have the production postcards framed and waiting to go on the wall when I next redecorate. They aren't going up now.

PronounssheRa · 26/06/2024 10:02

Violetparis · 26/06/2024 08:11

Dawn Butler has tweeted that she agrees with David Tennant. Wonder if this is going to get more media coverage now a Labour MP has got involved.

Dawn was foolish, she has just given a free pass to any knuckle dragging racist to say the same thing about her.

CorruptedCauldron · 26/06/2024 10:03

Re the ‘hyenas’ comment - many people on here think Tennant was out of order and we’re simply calling it out. That doesn’t mean we are all right-wing, and it doesn’t mean that we all love everything Kemi Badenoch ever says. On women’s sex-based rights however, I believe she’s spot on. That is my opinion, which I’m entitled to have. I will listen to anyone who is talking sense on women’s rights and child safeguarding, I won’t cover my ears and say lalala you’re from the nasty party, I can’t hear you.

Meanwhile, here’s an interesting article in Spiked, not sure it’s been posted yet:

https://www.spiked-online.com/2024/06/25/david-tennants-rant-about-kemi-badenoch-was-deeply-revealing/

BlastedPimples · 26/06/2024 10:07

@CorruptedCauldron hear hear.

I loathe the Tories. But on this issue, Kemi is spot on.

UniversalAunt · 26/06/2024 10:09

MimiGC · 25/06/2024 17:09

That was a long pause - after he said he wished she didn't exist anymore. I expect he realised that what he had said sounded terrible, so he added the next backtracking bit about not wishing ill of her.

Indeed.

For a man whose job it is to spout stuff…he left himself just enough pace to draw breath - so that the audience may respond - & then realised that the crowd were not going his way.

On paper, it reads that he spoke those words as one sentence. On the podium, he had to adjust in mid-sentence his message & tone very quickly.

DT has done himself no favours, he has revealed too much.
Not longer the actor, we have seen the man & are no longer bound by the spell.
