The options here are that either she doesn’t understand the Equality Act (a Labour initiative) in which case she’s unfit to govern or she is correct that the Equality Act allows men into women’s single sex spaces (thus making them mixed sex & therefore not ‘safe’ for women & children) in which case it prevents effective #safeguarding & needs reviewing. Which is it? It is simply unacceptable for the shadow education secretary to have such an abysmal understanding of #safeguarding. There simply are no watertight 'processes'. Men in prison for rape have obtained a GRC. It's simply paperwork and a diagnosis of 'gender dysphoria' which is remarkably easy to get.

All well and good Bridget, don't begrudge you that, but please outsource that job and invest your Oxford degree into some actual critical thinking so that real women and girls not in the Westminster bubble don't have to suffer.

As we always suspected, their pledges on single sex spaces are meaningless because they have redefined men with a GRC as women in all respects.

Not forgetting a whole generation of kids and their worried parents.

Yep this is what I thought Labour's position was, although it has been hard to drag out of them that by "single sex spaces" they never meant toilets or changing rooms.

So any man can walk into a doctor's surgery, talk about feeling like a woman for a bit, get a signature on a sheet of paper and then 'be' legally a woman — beard, male genitalia and all — and legally go into women's loos and changing rooms and call himself a lesbian in a Labour-run world.

I'm canvassing for Labour and this subject is coming up more frequently on the doorstep. There have been more people every day mentioning it. I had an HCP talk to me about the nurses who're launching a discrimination case yesterday and talking in a very frank way about how trans-mania (her words) has seized her health board and colleagues.

And if a male teacher has a GRC??

is she really advocating that we teach a generation of children not to be able to identify men as men? And if they do, they're wrong, punished???

I'm getting the impression that these people are less ideologically driven, and more completely ignorant.

It has always been clear that when Labour talk about "safe spaces" and about protecting women's single sex spaces they are thinking only of exceptional circumstances, such as refuges and prisons, not everyday facilities such as toilets or changing rooms.

You should tell your candidate and the party leaders that.

They have all been cowed internally so having a bit of argy bargy disruption means that at some point they have to ask the question.

Only in the last couple of days a group of five nurses have been reported as taking legal action against their NHS trust, which has been permitting access to the women's changing area to a young male who 'identifies as a woman'. This person has been walking around in the women's changing area with his genitalia on show and staring at women's breasts as they change into their scrubs. They were told they needed to re-edcuate themselves.

Labour are totally going against the flow - but seem determined to honour the commitments made to Stonewall, and to people such as Linda Riley. So wrong on every level.
