"This is deeply disturbing from Phillipson of Labour.
The options here are that either she doesn’t understand the Equality Act (a Labour initiative) in which case she’s unfit to govern or she is correct that the Equality Act allows men into women’s single sex spaces (thus making them mixed sex & therefore not ‘safe’ for women & children) in which case it prevents effective #safeguarding & needs reviewing. Which is it? It is simply unacceptable for the shadow education secretary to have such an abysmal understanding of #safeguarding. We accept that there is widespread lack of understanding about what safeguarding actually is. I don't know if it's a result of Labour trying to play both sides, or whether they genuinely don't understand the issues (because they wouldnt meet with women) But where it has led me to is a place of distrust. I do not trust the Labour Party, and I don't know what they stand for.

I think that is what the continual reference to "safe spaces" has been all about. 'Safe spaces' has no mention of Sex.

So, Labour finally breaks cover about what they mean when they say ‘safe spaces’, or indeed ‘women’s spaces’ - they mean spaces for women and girls plus men who say they are women. As pp have said, it’s not possible to know whether a man has a grc, so no man can be questioned - all men have access.

I’m surprised some people think this won’t apply to other settings - DV shelters, rape crisis support, intimate healthcare. In Labour terms, TWAW and any man can claim to be a transwoman. This will be in law, so no chance to develop case law to challenge it with a Labour government

I totally understand that, given all the other priorities in the country, some people feel they can’t not vote labour - but be in no doubt about how they will act on women’s rights. They have told us all already

Aren't Labour a bit slow to jump OFF the bandwagon - they jumped on it quickly enough. It doesn't matter if a man has a meaningless certificate, he's certainly not going to carry it around and show it before entering toilets, and even so, he is still a man and thus in no way entitled to use women's spaces. Can't believe anyone is voting for Labour, how sad that there's nobody worth voting for though.

I’ve name changed for this but I grew up in the same street as Bridget at the same time and I’m really surprised she’d go along with this, if I remember correctly her mum used to work in the women’s refuge and she worked there herself. She was always so clever and sensible.

They have clearly (now) show us what their plans are. We need to take this slip up (for surely this was meant for AFTER the election?) very seriously and vote accordingly.

If they're not amending the EA, I would guess it just remains in the current limbo of no one really knowing? And the path of least resistance for most providers is to just let any male use the female space.
