It's a superb article. I don't think there's ever been a celebrity in my entire life who I've loved as much as I love JKR.

And now there's 1,200 comments on the article! Almost all agreeing with her. Labour are stupid if they don't understand how strongly women feel about this.

'But it's in the right wing press'

Aye. Would that be something to do with all the bullying and intimidation that went on at the Guardian by any chance?!

Front page BBC News.

It's not just women, now, either. This is unfortunately when Labour are likely to start bloody listening - most men also don't like being lied to or treated like fools.

JKR in The Times. Labour have dismissed women like me

Unless I’m misunderstanding, this is a clear vote for the Conservatives - who got us into this mess in the first place.

Labour created the GRA in 2004

That legislation caused this mess

None of the political parties have dealt with this well. They all initially bought in to the trans nonsense and failed to exercise any critical thinking. Hence the sainted NHS running a major campaign of experimenting on mentally vulnerable children and young people with untested drugs and brutal experimental surgery.
Cass has paused that but with politicians and everyone else still running scared of the trans extremist bullies, it'll take ages before sanity is restored.

mumda · 22/06/2024 11:15

There's a poll showing one of the Herefordshire constituencies is going to be green. If you think labour are insane then greens are saying 'hold my pint' ...

Yes you are misunderstanding this.

See my previous post about what actions Labour could make to address the questions that JKR makes and answer why, when it is an election, is it suddenly women's problem to ignore 'because the Tories'?

Women have been asking on here since 2018 for Labour to address this issue and this type of abusive activism.

Yampy · 22/06/2024 11:21

Excellent article, clearly spelling out for all to see the complete fuckery women are having to deal with.

I suspect the voters of (part of) Herefordshire will be having another think when the Greens want to permit solar farms and come after their wood burners and their cars - there aren't a lot of places in Herefordshire where you can live without a car or two.

I'm on or near JKR's street now, sadly not going round for a cuppa, just wandering and found myself here.

OK, SON, PUT THE CAMERA DOON AND MOVE AWAY FROM THE WINDAE!

RoyalCorgi · 22/06/2024 11:26

Would that be something to do with all the bullying and intimidation that went on at the Guardian by any chance?!

Not just that. The Guardian simply wouldn't publish an article like this, even if it's by the most famous and most successful author in the world. At least 95% of the articles they publish on the gender issue are pro gender ideology, and they don't open the comments on them, because they know people disagree with it. In the past, when they did open comments on these pieces, anyone who said anything as mildly reasonable as "humans can't change sex" would have their comment deleted, and if you said it two or three times, you'd get banned.

Thus the good folks at the Guardian no doubt manage to convince themselves that most people agree with them.

Interesting that the framing is shifting to where it should be.

If you are a party that says you believe in equality and human rights, ending misogyny and violence against women (remember what is actually in the Labour manifesto)

Then this is a crucial conversation to have. If that makes various people shift about nervously in their seats, then the next question is, why are they so uncomfortable about having this conversation?

Then we need to have that conversation about homophobia and the conversion therapy pledge and the Cass Review.

None of this is anti-trans. Anyone seeking to frame this as anti-trans is fundamentally dishonest.

This is about the upholding of the existing rights and dignities of women and homosexuals and religious minorities that have been conveniently dispensable and forgettable in all the virtue signalling.

These issues are worthy of respect in a democratic society.

It will be interesting to see where the narrative goes from here.

This debate was the only one that touched on womens rights.
Nothing on the 7 Party debate, nothing in the Starmer v Sunsk debate …nothing. It’s definitely something the other Party’s don’t want to discuss live on TV.
Yet it affects 51% of the population
It was high time this subject came up and should have been there front and centre of every debate.

I really don’t think people and most Party’s care at all about the rights of women……
If Labour get in and if women and caring men don’t don’t take this matter seriously it’s game over.

Tinysoxxx · 22/06/2024 11:28

The BBC has an article on this, which I think is misleading. It mentions 6 of the 9 protected characteristics. Why not mention the other 3? It leaves out gender reassignment. I wonder why?

Under the Equality Act 2010, it is illegal to discriminate against anyone because of "protected characteristics".
These are a set of identifying traits that are protected by law and include age, disability, religion, race, sex and sexual orientation among others.
Some interpret sex in this context as referring strictly to biological sex, while others believe it also applies to people with a gender recognition certificate; a legal document that allows someone to change the legal sex on their birth certificate.

mrshoho · 22/06/2024 11:28

Just when I think JKR had reached peak perfection, she pulls this killer interview that expresses the point so perfectly. A million thanks to HRH JKR.

SinnerBoy · 22/06/2024 11:29

^...and they don't open the comments on them, because they know people disagree with it.

Yes, I wonder how they cope with being under the delusion that most of their readers are terrible bigots? I mean - come on! - they bloody know, but are in thrall to the zealots and are happy to spout cheery sounding, positive bullshit, whilst ignoring the tsunami of nasty shit.

MarieDeGournay · 22/06/2024 11:29

I heard somebody - sorry to be vague: politician? interviewer? - saying that the gender issue isn't important 'because it affects only a tiny proportion of the population'!!!!

Zebedee999 · 22/06/2024 11:34

Hatfullofwillow · 21/06/2024 21:57

She's one of people that contributed to the Tories winning in 2017, she abandoned Labour.

Right minded people stand up for what is right. And Labour saying women have penises isn't right at any level. You seem to thin Labour deserve power no matter what batsh1t nonsense they come up with.
I stopped voting Labour when they lied in a dodgy dossier to create an illegal war - that put blood on my hands. But people with no scruples still vote for them.

Neatly summing up the almost literal invisibility of over half the population.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 22/06/2024 11:39

Halfemptyhalfling · 22/06/2024 09:19

I think this is poor timing. There are no parties supporting gender critical beliefs (despite conservative posturing trans rights became prominent while they were in power) Labour are it seemsmoving away from trans rights anyway. If this blows up labour could lose votes from women or gen z so better to wait until after election. In the election the most important things are people can't afford food, housing or to have children

We live in a democracy.
Everyone has a choice on the areas they find most important.
We are not sheep!

RedToothBrush · 22/06/2024 11:39

borntobequiet · 22/06/2024 11:35

Neatly summing up the almost literal invisibility of over half the population.

The inability to define and protect the characteristic of sex in law has implications for homosexuals.

Replacing sex with gender means gay rights are no longer protected.

So actually I would argue it affects a sizeable majority of the population not just women.

No they're wrong. It affects 50% at least.
You could argue it affects everyone.
Everyone is being gaslit by being asked to pretend people can change sex.

@Scruffily I'd just like to add that I don't disagree with a single thing you wrote, if anything you probably understated it. I actually liked Corbyn, he only burnt his bridges with me when he refused to call Hamas terrorists after Oct 7th. But we are, where we are and when life gives you lemons....

And for Starmer when he said
it was OK for Netanyahu to cut off all water and electricity in Gaza…….an act of genocide!
