JKR: Here is what will win my vote. This is what I consider to be really important. Can you answer my questions.

What is the correct response to this, if you think she's powerful enough to stop Corbyn in 2017

Is it
a) give a shedload of abuse?
b) answer the fucking question?

Answers on a postcard to your local electoral office.

RedToothBrush · 22/06/2024 09:30

JKR just asked the question: why are Labour doing this. Why have Labour, deliberately in some cases, forced women out of the party for raising concerns over women's rights? Why have so many Labour MPs gone on record saying things that undermine women's rights?

We would like an answer. Before the election. Because we want to know who we are electing and what motivates them and why.

It's a relevant question

Excellent post @RedToothBrush I completely agree.

crabbyoldbat · 22/06/2024 10:10

Labour have responded to the JKR article - this from the BBC's coverage:
We can now bring you the latest comments from the Labour Party, which begins by saying that it "is the party of women's equality, with a manifesto that puts women front and centre".
"Sex and gender are different, as Labour's Equality Act makes clear," the statement continues, "that's why we have consistently said that we will not introduce self ID and that we will protect single sex spaces for biological women".

BBC piece

This seems pretty clear to me, and is what has been said before. But it's not getting through and the question isn't going away , and I think that's because Starmer himself has not made a clear statement (although he has burbled through something similar) - he just needs to do that simple thing, as RedToothBrush and MrsOvertonsWindow said earlier.

General election live: Labour says it is party of women's equality after Rowling criticises gender stance

The Harry Potter author said she would "struggle to support" the party if Sir Keir Starmer maintained his current stance on gender recognition.

Which spaces and how will men with GRCs be excluded?

18 months ago Dodds made a statement and still not answered

They’ve spent all that time ignoring women, that’s their bc strategy

Love that JKR has elevated this. She’s brilliant

And a former £1m donation in 2008 is no small change

DrNickedMaCorpus · 22/06/2024 10:15

Shame they're so hazy on what gender is and HOW they will "protect single sex spaces for women".

DrNickedMaCorpus · 22/06/2024 10:16

The problem here is that they've made a huge, huge error in saying that 1% of women have a penis and they have not acknowledged it.

It's hard to win back trust, Labour. You can't just handwave it away.

The Equality Act doesn't make it clear. That's the fucking point

HarmonicAnalysis · 22/06/2024 10:20

A stonking piece by JKR. Thanks for the share, impossibletoday.

It's been archived here: https://archive.ph/9n0WU

DrNickedMaCorpus · 22/06/2024 10:25

We shouldn't have to beg for crumbs. We should know that the incoming government will, as a matter of course, protect women's rights, uphold reality, grasp basic biology, be honest and not afraid to talk openly without scripted soundbites.

We should not have to comb every statement for weasly words and manipulative fudge.

The Equality Act doesn't make it clear. That's the fucking point

And even when it does make it clear (I.e. there are very clear examples given as to rape crisis services being able to offer single sex services and being able to exclude males with a GRC), it isn't being protected. The I am Sarah case in Brighton and the situation at the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre make that clear.

Even with the Occupational Requirements, when a male was employed into a position which had been explicity advertised for women, the powers that be (EHRC) just threw up their hands and said, oh well.

Trouble is he’s likely to get mandate for his shite soon, so we can all enjoy more of it

Peers at sky... I'll hold off on the ice cream the now. Don't want to jinx it

BigCroc · 22/06/2024 10:35

Now that Keir has made a statement that would be regarded as transphobic if a woman in the workplace said it, is Keir now transphobic? Looks that way.
Maybe HR need to have a chat...

JuneFTW · 22/06/2024 10:35

Wonderful article! Thank you for sharing. Was amazed to see this is finally the lead story on the BBC, about time some sunlight is shone on the woeful state of our politicians and their policies.

RedToothBrush · 22/06/2024 10:39

What fascinates me is the abusive relationship between woman and labour voters.

"if you don't vote Labour then" insert x consequence framed as a thread.

And the coercive
"now is not the right time to ask a question"

If now is not the right time, when is? We've been asking it loudly since 2018.

BezMills · 22/06/2024 10:40

Long overdue, and credit to all the women for holding his feet to the fire.

Dear labour

"Women are not your service voters". Sort your party out and don't blame women if you're losing (man) votes to the top 5 shittest prime ministers of all time, and farage.

Floisme · 22/06/2024 10:51

Oh my word, she's bounced Labour into making a statement.

Ok it's one of their usual shifty statements that you need a legal dictionary to translate. But nevertheless JKR has forced them to talk about the very thing they're desperate not to talk about.

And it looks like they might have realised they can't get away any more with resorting to phrases like 'toxic' 'Culture War' or 'both sides'.

What a woman.

NamechangeMay24 · 22/06/2024 10:56

That is a fairly clear (if untruthful) statement from Labour.

Do they think that all those quotes in the article show a party that has ‘consistently said it won’t introduce self id and will respect single sex spaces’?

'wheesht for indy' was also a thing.

EasternStandard · 22/06/2024 11:00

That statement is just a rehash

It doesn’t actually say anything. What are people taking from it?

Blair ended his PM ship with a £1m donation from pro women JKR. Starmer’s trying to start his and gets an article and no money

Good. And it’s Labour who is lost not JKR
