She's pulled out of local hustings because it's not safe for her to attend.

But Don't worry.

Keir Starmer will be along to offer his support to Rosie and condemn these attacks on democracy soon...

Ha! Although in this case, I'm afraid my money's on frit.

Come on Keir, there's still time to prove me wrong.

I'm going to recreate Buckingham Palace out of matchsticks while we wait.

Sonia Sodha, who I normally find takes great care to report accurately, has twixed:

'NEW: Labour have just confirmed to me that Labour peer Lord Cashman had the whip suspended yesterday.'
https://x.com/soniasodha/status/1802668088673865946

Good. And now a public announcement please, Sir Keir, otherwise I'm going to assume you're too frit.

Should know by now, KS never misses an opportunity to disappoint! 😀

Thank you.
I see it says, 'Labour is yet to issue a public statement'
Hopefully they will very soon.

fromorbit · 17/06/2024 13:41

Its confirmed.

Labour Lord suspended after 'lazy or frit' comment about Rosie Duffield who cancelled debates over trolling - Evening Standard

Rosie Duffield, who is fighting to retain the Canterbury seat for Labour, has been a defender of women’s rights and female-only spaces

Starmer is going to get asked. I suspect he will say similar to Rayner. However what Starmer says is not the most important thing here.

The significant thing is that sexist TRA nonsense has been openly punished for the first time. The TRAs inside Labour are facing a new world. This doesn't mean the fight is over, but it is now a level playing field.

When competition is fair and about truth the TRAs can't compete. They can only win when it is rigged or they can lie. The fight inside Labour has a long way to go, but we have a fighting chance now and Gender crits will only get stronger.

Thanks Rosie and everyone who stood up for her.

Kier speaks:

Sir Keir Starmer said that Lord Cashman’s comments were “totally inappropriate”.
He added: “That’s why it was important that the whip was withdrawn as it was very swiftly.”
Lord Cashman had the whip suspended on Sunday, The Telegraph understands.

Of course, if KS had stood up for Rosie all along, he'd be able to take the moral high ground now. But as he didn't...

Thank you, I'm very, very pleased that Starmer has spoken up and delighted to be wrong.

I really hope these are the early shoots of a fresh start. Whether I vote for them myself or not, Labour are odds on to form the next government and it would have been intolerable if they had let this go or tried to deal with it on the quiet.

lonelywater · 17/06/2024 14:34

Having the whip withdrawn. What does that add up too? being docked a weeks pocket money or something rather more than that?

lonelywater · 17/06/2024 14:35

SinnerBoy · 17/06/2024 04:36

Ah... Gwen Troake was the lady FC was disparaging about.

Yes, and the incident utterly trashed Fanny Cradocks career-never seen on telly ever again.

Midgegreenstreet · 17/06/2024 14:38

One wonders whether KS would have bothered to say anything if Cashman hadn't been a twat and his hand forced.

I'm still yet to be convinced Starmer is anything more than an obfuscating coward but I hope to be proved wrong.

Absolutely fuck all really in practice since he's a Lord.

He might not be welcome to sit with his mates in the dining hall. That's about it.

I'd be interested to know what was going to happen to people on twitter who have accounts connected to Labour who abused Rosie.

We went through similar with Corbyn and anti-Semitism from Labour accounts.

I'd like to think that the current Labour leader was taking a more proactive approach to unacceptable conduct that the previous one.

Don't hold your breath then. I dont demur from the popular notion that politics is (mostly)a shitty business for shitty people. I dont understand Starmer at all as he gives off the drive, ambition and burning desire to effect change of a carpet factory manager.

Maaate · 17/06/2024 15:39

Asked about the issue by journalists today, Keir Starmer said what Cashman said was “particularly inappropriate”, adding: “That’s why the support of the whip was withdrawn as it was very swiftly”.

Still can't quite bring himself to actually condemn what been happening to Rosie under his watch and with what I can now only assume is his approval.

Tom Harris in the Telegraph

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/17/the-truth-about-starmers-changed-labour-has-been-exposed/

https://archive.ph/JIuBg Starmer click here! You need to read this one.

It's like Harris read my mind, took out all the 'erm's and 'you know's, all the digressions about biscuits, and printed it in the paper.

That's a excellent and well written report and sums up the whole debacle very well.

duc748 · 17/06/2024 15:56

Agree with the general thrust, but I rolled my eyes so hard at 'Marxist teachings' that they nearly fell out of their sockets. The Torygraph just can't resist, can it?

Starmer’s statement, while better than nothing, was milquetoast - I’d rather he just said loudly and clearly 'leave Rosie Duffield alone. Stop threatening her. People who threaten MPs (or their family/staff) are not welcome in the Labour Party and will be reported to the police’.

This.

Even if you disagree, its not an excuse for the degree of abuse she has had.

We need good leadership to state, 'play the ball, not the player' in terms that idiots can't just ignore.

There are many MPs that I strongly disagree with, or that I don’t particularly like, but I would condemn violent threats or acts against them vociferously. I would be appalled to see them threatened or hurt.

I can’t understand why this solidarity doesn’t happen more in politics today.

It really isn't hard, so why won't he?

I know this has been suggested before: is he being ‘held hostage’ not by a hardcore of Labour TRAs, but by a younger family member?

It seems to happen a fair bit within the Labour upper echelon.

Anyway, good to see Cashman suffer some consequences and embarrassment for once. Men like him are anathema to socialist values.
