Sinèad Watson was detained for tweeting

Just seen this by Sinèad's lawyer. Don't know anymore than this, sounds par for the course unfortunately.

Someone at @PSOSGreaterGlas needs to answer for the absurd, inhumane protocols you have set up. You need a complete policy revamp and whoever came up with your current procedures needs to be fired.

Sinèad Watson was detained for tweeting, for speech. For typing characters into a text box. Her phone was taken. She was arrested. She was handcuffed. She was put in a dirty cell. She was not given feminine products and made to sit in her own menstrual blood for 3 hours.

For what? She is under suspicion of "malicious communication online." Not a violent crime. Not a crime that has anything to do with the content of her cell phone. All of Sinead's purportedly illegal tweets are/were public at the time of her arrest. There is NOTHING on her cell phone that has anything to do with them. This is a violation of her privacy to embark on a fishing expedition for unrelated evidence.

Put aside the obvious free speech violation, because I get that not every country feels the same way (but it is a violation of her God-given rights to charge her with this absurd thought crime). Even IF you believe that tweets are illegal, the way she was handled and processed is completely unnecessary, unsafe, and dehumanizing.

Someone needs to lose their job. Sinèad is owed a massive public apology for what happened to her at a BARE minimum.

Cue "echo chamber"...

ArabellaScott · 07/06/2024 08:53

To criticise a woman for her tone when responding to people wishing harm on her is startling.

'Be kind and polite when responding to your attackers'

Sadistic.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 07/06/2024 08:53

Re the JKR point above - I think JKR knows Sinead and in fact tweeted in support of her yesterday, so that was not hyperbole.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 07/06/2024 08:55

I see that female people menstruating while in a prison cell don’t deserve to be treated with dignity and given the opportunity to use tampon or pads

They absolutely do deserve to be treated with respect and it's disgusting if someone don't get any tampons or pads.
Doesn't give you the right to do what the hell you like was my point though because "I'm a woman" victim narrative that is always so prevalent on here.

RainWithSunnySpells · 07/06/2024 08:55

I just cannot comprehend the thought process of anyone who thinks that it is OK to not give a sanitary pad to a female prisoner who needs one.

Even in an extreme situation (maybe a female prisoner who is on suicide watch) it must be possible to provide sanitary care and look after a really vulnerable female prisoner.

Thanks for clarifying. Your comment made it sound like you didn't care. Its good that you agree women deserve to be treated with care and dignity, including arrested women.

Victim narrative? Nice. If that's how you interpret women discussing their concerns and talking about their lives then that's up to you.

Nobody here has suggested women can do what the hell we like because we have periods.

You chose to use the words "she's a little woman on her period"

I'm presuming you just didn't realise how misogynistic that sounds or that arrested women should still be afforded dignity with menstruation until it was spelled out for you.

ThreeWordHarpy · 07/06/2024 09:16

We should not, indeed must not, get used to the idea that it is ok to arrest anyone for expressing their legally protected opinions and beliefs on X. We have to get outraged every time this happens because this can never allowed to become normal.

Oh dear.

Sorry but this whole "she's a little woman on her period leave her alone" victim narrative leaves me a bit 🙄

Did you just realise that you posted this on a feminist board and what that sentence says about you? Now you backtrack.

Hang on. It was a backtrack with a hook though.

You think that this is much better?

No one has made any comment about what Sinead tweeted because no one know what tweet she was put in a holding cell, deprived of menstrual products for and then supposedly questioned while bleeding through the prison clothes she was placed in. I would think being questioned knowing you (general you) were bleeding through would certainly leave any woman in a position of being even more distressed at the process.

I cannot imagine a person being treated this way for anything less than a direct and clear and immediate threat. So to me, I find this to be abhorrent. And now that it is known to be the process the police use, it becomes part of a special punishment for women who say things people don’t like, even when they are finally declared as innocent.

It becomes just another silencing tactic.

I assume thats how this poster sees feminism.

ArabellaScott · 07/06/2024 09:27

'innocent until proven guilty' is the absolute foundation of UK justice. Suggesting that if someone has been arrested they are de facto guilty is very dangerous territory.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 07/06/2024 09:27

Is she OK? Is she out of custody and does she have legal support?

Elspyth · 07/06/2024 09:31

Did anyone say what she's tweeted?

Unfortunately tweeting can be a crime and yes the police would take your phone if someone has (hypothetically) complained about being harassed.

Innocent until proven guilty could also be applied to the police here.

I archived that tweet, there's also this one[sensitive image]. From browsing through all that mess I haven't seen a single person laughing at the thought of what she claims. It looks like she's drunk and not thinking about what she's posting.

Talking about digging a hole for oneself.

The red text in your screenshot tells us everything we need to know about your reason for posting in this thread.

What does red text mean?

RainWithSunnySpells · 07/06/2024 09:43

It's that Wotsit Eyes Terf Blocker thing. 'Terfs' are in red. 'Non Terfs' are in green.

Helleofabore · 07/06/2024 09:48

Shigami eyes? Or something like that. That is pretty extreme to use lists like that. Certainly no person making balanced judgements on each individual they come across on Twitter would use it.

Hey @Christinapple we see you with the red text .. lol What are you doing skulking around on the feminist board?

Creepy

Sinead Watson is a detranstitioner who was already vulnerable when she arrived at the Sandyford Clinic and as a result of their ideologically-based interventions she suffered terrible physical and psychological damage. She's talked about her appalling experience to members of the Scottish parliament. If anyone at all has the moral right to rant in public against the perpetrators and promoters of this outrage she does.

Hugosmaid · 07/06/2024 09:54

I remember these laws being talked about years ago. It was a Sunday morning talk show and they were saying it was to stop extremist Islamic preachers. Many journalists spoke out that it would be used else where.

And here we are. Used against women on Twitter rebuffing TRA.

I hope she gets support and I’m glad JKR has voiced it. Hopefully it will get picked up by the newspapers.

So what did she tweet?
Sorry but this whole "she's a little woman on her period leave her alone" victim narrative leaves me a bit 🙄
So, what, me right now could tweet/incite what I like online?
Without any context this is what it comes across as.
You're not immune to inciting hate just because you're a woman.

"she's a little woman on her period leave her alone"

Why do you always put words in other poster's mouths and then argue against those words that nobody has actually said?

The problem isn't that she's some 'little woman on her period', it's that the police treatment of her was disgusting, making her sit in her menstrual blood for 3 hours knowing that she needed a pad but not giving her one. She's not the first woman arrested for hurting someone's feelings on Twitter that the police have done that to either.

It's inhumane and humiliating, and not acceptable just because it happens to a woman you don't like.

dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 07/06/2024 10:14

If true, The police treatment is far worse than even the most offensive tweet I can imagine.

It's not as if there's no precedent for this. The police did the same to Kate Scottow and caused emotional harm to her children too. What the police did in that case was far, far worse than Kate's tweets. And yet, despite Kate being exonerated in court, the police are never held accountable.

They're words. Unless it's likely to result in violence and / or a direct threat to a person- and terfy tweets are far more likely to result in death threats and actual violence to the woman tweeting than anything else (mysteriously men don't seem to be arrested for these threats though) - no tweet should result in such human rights abuses.
