Et aussi, les Mexicanes ont fait une filme trans-Francais ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johanne_Sacreblu

'Johanne Sacreblu, a trans woman formerly known as Jonathan Sacreblu, returns home to Villa Croissant, a picturesque French town, after spending some time as a rancher in Mexico. Her family, who runs France's largest baguette shop and have appointed Johanne as their heir, are enraged at her for transitioning, as they feel that it would not be a good look for her when she takes over the family business, despite her iterating that she doesn't want it. At the same time, the Sacreblu family's business rivals, the Ratatouille family, who runs France's largest croissant shop, are also berating their son Agtugo, a trans man, for being an unfit heir to their business due to being born a woman. Both families decide to put the two in a bread-making competition. '

The irony. So it's the woman playing the actual lead role in EP (apparently KSG comes in with considerably less screen time) who ended up bagging an Oscar this year. Poetic justice, even if she was mislabeled as "supporting actress."

No best actress Oscar for Gascon. The film won 2 out of 13 nominations.

Ooh, I'm pleased Kieran Culkin won, he was great!

The Telegraph has summarised the whole sorry story

The picture of the actor next to Selena Gomez, I know she's small but he looks huge.

It's faintly amusing that gendered words like 'actress' had fallen out of favour but have now come back. I need to check if they're actually used for women again or just for blokes who claim to have lady brains.

Thats a great article, thoroughly enjoyed it!

Of course from the 2025 festival season on, everyone’s going to be combing actors’ social accounts like they’re checking their kids’ hair for lice,” one strategist explains. “But though it sounds ridiculously naive, Taback’s team will have assumed that because Gascón is herself transgender, her views on every topic under the sun would be woker than woke. And of course that didn’t turn out to be the case.”

I did snort somewhat indecorously when I heard the “Karla, if you’re tweeting this, my name is Jimmy Fallon” line.

That's the bit that leapt off the page for me, too!

It's really no surprise that an ideology steeped in sexism and homophobia, is reliant on regressive gender stereotypes, and tries desperately to turn male privilege into faux victimhood, isn't going come up with a nice slew of progressive sound bites.

GhostOrchid · 03/03/2025 17:16

Thanks for sharing the article. Very fun read.

Bit miffed that Emilia Perez has one more Oscar than Conclave. Zoe Saldana seems like a nice enough person but you shouldn’t get Oscars for being the best thing about a bad film.

lcakethereforeIam · 03/03/2025 18:09

Seems like a cross between a participation trophy and a face saving gesture.

GhostOrchid · 03/03/2025 18:42

She cleaned up in all the precursor awards for reasons I can’t quite fathom given it was a strong field. I think Felicity Jones gave the best performance in the category in a real supporting turn (ZS is a co-lead not a supporting actress, although there’s always a bit of category pushing, cf Kieran Culkin). I would have liked Isabella Rossellini to take it for sentiment’s sake.

The article will doubtlessly be picked apart by trans zealots, George Floyd, for example wasn't the victim of a Police shooting, although Chauvin did murder him.

Also, the Grammar Police may wonder at the "GARGOYLES OF BEELZEBUB (sic)" it's spelled correctly.
