I think she did it to wind you up.

Uipott · 31/05/2024 21:56

Jess Phillips is such an odd choice. It took her a long time but she’s made it clear she knows sex matters. She made the case for single sex services in that debate in Westminster Hall last year https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2023-06-12/debates/F74BD8CC-4807-46F4-AA51-5402B7CFE8F9/LegislativeDefinitionOfSex. So odd.

Ramblingnamechanger · 31/05/2024 22:11

I wish she had gone for Leeds NW….where Alex must still believe there is no problem with men in women’s prisons, as he has not bothered to reply to any of my emails

illinivich · 31/05/2024 22:24

Has jess phillips changed her mind about allowing women to get out of their marriage before their husbands get a GRC? She has described the idea as horrible before now.

I think KJK must be targeting a seat where she thinks the incumbent Labour MP might not win, so that KJK can claim she "never loses" and potentially pick up some extra votes.
Jess Phillips has been quite open that she thinks her seat is at risk due to large numbers of voters disaffected with Labour over Gaza. I can't think of many other Labour MPs that look like there is much prospect of losing their seat. So maybe that's it.

The alternative is she thinks it will be click baity because JP has a high media profile.

It is a real shame because Jess Phillips is such a pro-woman MP and there aren't enough of them. Wish KJK had picked someone else.

Birmingham Yardley has the lowest proportion of Muslims and students of any Birmingham constituency. Jess has no exposure to Gaza.

I’m not sure on that specific point - she’s definitely moved a lot since that terrible women and equalities committee report (2016/7?) where they recommended self ID. She’s clearly drawn a line that she supports single sex services and understands sexism as rooted in biology.

I’m sure there are lines to be drawn between her positions and KJK - from the video it sounds like the idea is to ‘expose’ JP for not being hardline enough in various ways. That just seems like a weird purity test of a woman who has put her neck out to state gender critical views.

JanesLittleGirl · 31/05/2024 22:55

Don't tell me that you believe what is published in the Daily Mail?

AdamRyan · 31/05/2024 23:13

Here's another independent candidate explicitly talking about Gaza and the fact that Jess Phillips' constituency polled 2% behind the independent in the mayoral election.

'Why I'm taking on Jess Phillips'

Jody McIntyre has put himself forward to stand in Birmingham Yardley against Jess Phillips. To donate to Jody's campaign, please follow this link:https://www...

It’s also been listed by the Labour Party as being at risk from a Gaza backlash

This is just Labour Party hogwash.

Part of their usual deceitful tactics to try and get people to toe the line.

With a few exceptions ie Tower Hamlets I doubt anywhere in the UK has that number of Muslims who could sway the vote, and all agree that they should vote against Labour.

Also a useful tactic as it stop discussion by the Labour Party about why they / Starmer have taken the position they have.

They make the Tories look liberal Inow that Braverman has gone).

IwantToRetire · 01/06/2024 01:39

Crouton19 · 31/05/2024 20:09

@IwantToRetire Ed Davey?

No think it should be a Labour candidate. But then I realised I dont know that much about individual male Labour MPs.

Someone who is the Labour equivilant to Crispin Blunt.

Would be interested to hear of anyone who is as bad as that.

Otherwise I think KJK should got back to plan A, ie Starmer.

Even if there is no debate, there will be so much media around his constituency that they will need time fillers which I am sure the leader of PoW could easily do!

dunBle · 01/06/2024 05:59

Ben Bradshaw? Oh, he's not standing again, is he. Alex Sobel does sound like a good suggestion if it has to be Labour, but I'd second standing against Ed Davey.

Needmoresleep · 01/06/2024 08:17

The point is to highlight women's issues and their right to single sex spaces.

It will not be personal. KJK has always been about the message.

There would be too much other chatter if she faced Starmer, which is probably why she didn't. I agree that Jess Phillips is not the worst of the bunch, though for some reason she personally gives me the ick, but she has built her career on her claims to feminism and her concerns about women's safety. Given her position she could have done so much more. It is a good way for KJK to highlight the shortcomings of a future member of Starmer's senior team, and by default, of his current approach and policy.

anyolddinosaur · 01/06/2024 09:24

Would be better to stand against a man - but Angela Rayner would have been another option.

Angela Rayner, Nadia Whittome, Zarah Sultana, Stephen Morgan, Chris Bryant. There were loads of other options

Sloejelly · 01/06/2024 10:04

They may be an element of practicality involved, if she is expecting to spend a significant amount of time in the constituency.

Floisme · 01/06/2024 10:12

If it's about issues and not personalities then why not still stand in Brighton? Or in your own constituency? Or against the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities (the position, not the person)?

So far I'm not getting this choice at all, but then I didn't really get Let Women Speak when it started either, and she's proved me totally wrong on that

Yeah I don't get it either. But it's her show and we'll see where it goes before long...

EasternStandard · 01/06/2024 10:14

I had wondered if it was unchangeable with the posts applauding Labour after LRM got taken out, apparently taking her sting out

I don’t really care which constituency she chooses, it’ll be a combination of factors I assume

No, she wants to put someone with a high profile on the spot. She wants to use the fight to make women's rights an election issue nationally.

LRM was infamous. Jess Phillips will soon wield real power and be able to make a difference for women. KJK will be hoping to get the message across that JP needs to take a firm position and a real lead.

Life will be a lot easier if someone is able to help JP come to the realisation that bland statements are not enough. Women's rights matter and have to be fought for.

This assumes that JP holds the views she does because she hasn’t ’got the message’. I’d have thought she was one of the MPs with the widest experience of different positions, and she’s chosen hers.

I’m also not sure about her wielding real power. She held a minor shadow cabinet position, which she resigned. There are shadow ministers up for reelection.

DrSpartacularsUltraFeminism · 01/06/2024 10:40

It's possible, I guess, that she has data on constituencies where she has most support and that is feeding into her decisions. It's also possible that her/PoW's campaigning in that constituency will raise the issue with some people who are oblivious or unaware of the extent of the problem who will then ask questions of the other candidates.

EffieeBriest · 01/06/2024 10:41

Why not Penny Mordant or Jamie Wallis ?
