Billy Bragg’s attack on JK Rowling highlights the idiocy of woke tribalism

How can you tell that JK Rowling is totally in the wrong about gender identity? The answer, it turns out, is really very simple.

Some Conservatives agree with her.

That, at least, is the logic employed by Billy Bragg, the Left-wing singer turned trans rights activist.

Bragg’s attitude perfectly encapsulates the utter vacuity of political tribalism. Don’t judge the arguments on their merits – just judge the people who happen to be making them. So much quicker and simpler, isn’t it? Certainly for those who are too cataclysmically dim to judge an argument on its merits, anyway.

The problem is, this type of knee-jerk woke tribalism doesn’t even make sense on its own terms. After all, there are quite a few Tory MPs (for example, Caroline Nokes, the chair of the House of Commons select committee on Women and Equalities) who share Bragg’s view on gender identity.

Fuckssake. He really is as thick as the proverbial, isn't he?

Herculesthescot · 03/05/2024 00:49

Billy Bragg, can fuck right off. Literally no one gives a shit what he has to say.
Wanker!

lonelywater · 03/05/2024 01:43

it really is as fuckwitted as saying that since Hitler was a vegetarian then all vegetarians are nazis. Utter, utter twat.

Now, now. There are esteemed posters here on FWR who are very diligent at highlighting Bad Media and the resulting Tainted Souls.

AutumnCrow · 03/05/2024 05:55

So Billy Bragg is aligned with ‘problematic’ Tory MP Crispin Blunt. Nice.

And Bragg is therefore also aligned with Penny Mordaunt, Maria Miller, Amber Rudd, Nicky Morgan, Theresa May, and trendy Nokesy as pp mentioned. All Tories, every last one. All bought into the woo.

Ah, no. You see, "Problematic Alignment with Badness" is one of those Irregular Verbs.

teawamutu · 03/05/2024 08:06

Thick as a whale omelette.

BridasShieldWall · 03/05/2024 08:12

Billy Bragg perfectly encapsulates the phrase the ‘arrogance of the mediocre man’.

EdithStourton · 03/05/2024 08:35

I can't stand the whole, 'You agree with [this right-wing person] therefore you are a FASCIST/ that shows that feminism is now a right-leaning ideology/ this means that the GC movement is in the pay of far-right bodies.'

It's like saying, 'Joe Bloggs loves German Shepherd Dogs, therefore he agrees with Hitler and probably sleeps with Mein Kampf under his pillow.'

It's so fucking idiotic, and a waste of time engaging with it, but I go right on engaging because I don't want bullshitters to hold the floor.

flowertoday · 03/05/2024 08:39

Billy Bragg is a bit of a twit isn't he. I think he has had his time. I am not sure that anyone would take any notice of anything he is harping on about ?

Teentaxidriver · 03/05/2024 08:53

BB is irrelevant and tragic. He has had his moment of fame and is clinging on to the spotlight. He must be getting desperate though, given how pathetic his justifications have become.

DisappearingGirl · 03/05/2024 09:06

"There are quite a few Tory MPs (for example, Caroline Nokes, the chair of the House of Commons select committee on Women and Equalities) who share Bragg’s view on gender identity. Does that put Bragg on “the wrong side of the table”? Or is he on the wrong side and the right side of the table simultaneously? Either he’s capable of being in two places at once, or this table is a very unusual shape."

😂😂

Floisme · 03/05/2024 09:26

The real problem isn't Bragg himself, it's that he's not the only one who thinks like this. It's been a standard tactic of the left for as long as I can remember, and you see it on this board every day.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/05/2024 09:56

This was more or less my first reaction too!

BlackeyedSusan · 03/05/2024 10:10

Arse... The quotation didn't quote...

Though reading through most pp could have been quoted.

lanadelgrey · 03/05/2024 10:13

The trouble with feminism or the root of its great potential is that is doesn’t and never has fallen into the left/right, progressive/conservative paradigm and that infuriates the proponents of binary political organisation. Was thinking that while watching Shoulder to Shoulder, but all the way from then to pro choice Republican women to on here where some are stalwarts of either PP or WPUK. I know I’m more inclined to one side but I get why others turn out for the other. We need to keep the big tent wide open, though be aware it doesn’t stretch to far to the outer edges of extremism. That’s why I love FiLiA as the only tribalism it explicitly embraces is feminism

Not only am I vegetarian, I’m an atheist, like Stalin. Clearly I’m on the megalomaniac mass killer side of the table.

It’s been interesting to see the argument around this. One TRA/MRA said he couldn’t retweet a post on Twitter from someone he disliked, even if he agreed with the statement, because it would be “endorsing” the person. To these people, the truth is relative. They can’t accept that each person tends to be a mixture of good and bad and a fact is a fact regardless of who says it.

FranticFrankie · 03/05/2024 11:08

He gets worse
Is he ill? Or just a nob?

Womanofcustard · 03/05/2024 11:37

I object to the term ‘singer’ being applied to this tone-deaf fuckwit.

Womanofcustard · 03/05/2024 11:38

And in case anyone isn’t aware, he lives in a mansion in Dorset surrounded by ‘Private, keep out’ signs

terryleather · 03/05/2024 11:41

Gawd is he still at it?

Cosmosforbreakfast · 03/05/2024 12:02

He's really scraping the barrel for something to say now.

IwantToRetire · 03/05/2024 17:11

Have to say I partly posted because it's interesting that a mainstream newspaper if picking up on what FWRers have been saying for months (years?). And of course on twitter.

And yes I suspect they are doing as much for their political alliegances, but good to have this is the main stream.

ie the stupidity of the tribalist method of doing politics.

Cant imagine many Telegraph readers are that worried what Bragg thinks.

Also thought it paired nicely with the Daniel Radcliffe thread. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5066093-daniel-radcliffe-doubles-down

Anyone who can say that about any group needs to consider that they are in fact part of the tribablism of the group they praise.

The idea that FiLia is free of tribalism clearlly didn't read or share the views of the many posters on this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4662757-womens-place-uk-filia-event-the-elephant-ignored-yet-again?page=1

Not suggesting this thread rehases that discussion but just thought the opinon expressed just ignores that fact that not everyone has the same view of feminism as the poster!
