Transwimen actors call for trans quota quota for female roles

.. more specifically, for 2 to 3 TW candidates to be united to every 20-strong audition.

And one of the interviewed, a mid-40s trans actor, complains about getting fewer offers of female roles, ostensibly since "coming out" aged 40. Who's going to tell the poor dear about Amy Schumer's genius sketch celebrating an actress' "last fuckable day"? Welcome to womanhood, "sister."

‘Just let us audition’: UK transgender actors appeal to be cast in non-trans roles

Kim Tatum, Mariah Louca and Reece Lyons combine to call for trans women to be put on an equal footing for cis roles

I think another inconsitency is that a trans woman will never be reviewed at being unconvincing in a role. What reviewer is going to have the guts to say that Eddie Izzard is unconvincing or looks ridiciulous playing a female

Not sure Eddie Izard has ever tried to play a woman?

He mostly acts roles of slightly eccentric gent who likes to wear long hair and earrings.

Taylor in billions is amusing just as you know in any trading Pitt they would have the piss taken out of them. But on screen no one ever makes jokes about certain protected matters. Unless they are clearly the evil one. But we've seen Taylor acknowledge her femaleness before and she's been in a sex scene topless. Just no one takes the mick out of their they/them pronouns.

Now if you have it like real life -say sex and the city new series-people say it's non woke.

I think EI is trying to corner the market by playing all roles both male and female 🤔

You know, I would absolutely love to see a romantic love scene (no sex scene, just convince me you fancy the pants off "her") between EI and, say, one of the Hemsworth brothers.

That would make me laugh my fucking head off. It'd be even funnier seeing teeny tiny Daniel Radcliffe dwarfed in Izzard's arms as Dan sweeps "her" off "her" feet.

Eddie: "I feel I was given genetic of both".

Can an educated person really be that stupid?

PTSDBarbiegirl · 09/05/2024 08:46

Male actors should be cast in roles depicting 'Transwomen' for obvious reasons, namely 'TW' are males. 'TW's' should not be subject to positive discrimination and be cast as female characters. They can audition if they want but not female so no role. Should white male 'Transwomen' be cast as Michelle Obama or a black male non disabled 'Transwoman' cast as Steven Hawkings?

I've got just the drama in mind. The main problem with casting a trans actor is that it confuses the audience plot-wise. A trans police surgeon would be fine. A trans parent of a baby would make you wonder whether it's a surrogacy drama.

I've just read a novel that has lots of unresolved ambiguity and multiple points of view. The narrator was a rent boy and a middle aged woman took him home where they lived together for years (the relationship is also kept very ambiguous). There's no way of telling if she's trans. It's a substantial part but not directly relevant to the central mystery.

I think it would add delightfully to the ambiguity to cast a good looking transwoman (so maybe not Izzard). Radcliffe seems to love unflattering rôles (a horse botherer! a corpse! men with weird bodily excrescences!) so he would be just right for the ambiguously motivated ex-rent boy narrator.

It seems so.

I really wish those interviewing would ask Izzard to expand on that.

They should ask him whether he's a chimeric twin or has a mosaic genotype and then look at him very earnestly.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 09/05/2024 09:00

There is an anomaly between wanting to be cast to type (only TW to be cast as TW) and wanting to be cast as mothers.

Fine, no reason a part can’t be cast as any sort of person if it isn’t crucial to the story but central roles tend to involve the characters characteristics at their core.

CocoapuffPuff · 09/05/2024 09:36

There's times when it really doesn't matter, but those are background roles.
Example - "Grandma" with Lily Tomlin. Laverne Cox plays a tattoo artist who is a friend of Lily's character. Bit part, 10 mins on screen, totally irrelevant whether the part is played by a male or female.
Lily Tomlin's Grandma character played by a tw? Or her pregnant granddaughter played by a tw? Well, that's the entire plot line destroyed and the story made ludicrous.
Corrected to correct autocorrect of Laverne's name.....

afternoonoflife · 09/05/2024 09:47

It would also narrow down choices for other roles. Someone mentioned Inventing Anna, where Laverne Cox played one of the female roles. You see LC with their boyfriend, but onscreen typically males will be taller than the female in a romantic setting so that limits the boyfriend role to someone who is 6ft+ (LC is 5’11). Here it was a small role so probably not an issue, but for a lead it might be harder.

Filming the Night Manager, Hugh Laurie had to sit on cushions sometimes, otherwise Elizabeth Debicki (playing his girlfriend) was taller than him when they were filmed sitting down next to each other.

I don't think actors would really like it in the end if it became the rule that people could only play their own ethnicity. Would Jewish actors really like to be confined to Jewish roles? Or similarly, gay actors only playing gay roles?

It's dumb too.

Omid Djalili has said on more than one occasion that he always gets cast for roles that require any vaguely Middle Eastern/Asian baddie type - he doesn't seem to object to this!

I wonder how many roles there would be for him out there if he were only ever allowed to portray specifically Iranian-British characters?!

SinnerBoy · 09/05/2024 10:36

He'd make an excellent Salman Rushdie!

Not stupid.

Machiavellian.

Izzard knows exactly what he is doing.

Oops. I didn't realise that character was trans - asked my son with whom I was watching why there was only one woman in the troop

Me too.

burnoutbabe · 14/05/2024 17:04

I watched the final fallout episode and you see plenty of female brother hood members standing around.

So it's not clear they are trans at all. She looks more like a shorn Angelica jolie.
