Transwimen actors call for trans quota quota for female roles

.. more specifically, for 2 to 3 TW candidates to be united to every 20-strong audition.

And one of the interviewed, a mid-40s trans actor, complains about getting fewer offers of female roles, ostensibly since "coming out" aged 40. Who's going to tell the poor dear about Amy Schumer's genius sketch celebrating an actress' "last fuckable day"? Welcome to womanhood, "sister."

‘Just let us audition’: UK transgender actors appeal to be cast in non-trans roles

Kim Tatum, Mariah Louca and Reece Lyons combine to call for trans women to be put on an equal footing for cis roles

There was a transman in Fallout, a member of a religious military brotherhood. I kept waiting for the plot twist to be revealed, but no sign so far.

Ah yes. The one who got their foot hurt so maximums got his chance?

I just assumed they were shaven headed like all recruits. And thought good they had a female one.

CampervanKween · 02/05/2024 16:32

Sorry hadn't read the thread. You can tell she's desperately trying to speak and behave like a man but it seems so forced.

burnoutbabe · 02/05/2024 16:33

I know it is the brotherhood of the steal. (Fallout)

But I am a female character in the game and was welcomed to join them so assume females are allowed generally.

Esgaroth · 02/05/2024 16:35

This thread reminds me of the hilarious 2020 short film from Fox, Owl et al about a reformed TERF, but all the actors are trans (apart from the cat I suppose who tbh is the star of the piece).

Get Off My Turf! (Trans Short Film)

Get Off My Turf! is a short film about a transgender woman who finds out that her neighbour is transphobic. The film delves into some of the modern depiction...

This would work if they made a film about a female Joker, casting Dylan Mulvany. Jokes aside, it's tough to make it work. Hari Nef was a clanger in Barbie, a movie about hyper femininity with a lot of facial closeups 🙄

It's an extremely irritating article but I don't think the idea has legs for economic reasons. I'd be surprised if global audiences respond positively. Also I don't think famous leading men with weight in the industry will want this in terms of acting partners, they know people want to see them opposite a female lead who's aspirational and believable.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 02/05/2024 16:48

There's also cases like Lily Gladstone, she's non-binary only in the sense she uses both female and they pronouns. Would she get a double audition?

What I don't get about all this is then surely by the same logic, only (biological) women should play (biological) women?

Well exactly. I suppose it’s not a movement known for its logic though.

Don’t let Dame Katy Denise on Twitter hear you say that. She’s an advocate for trans animals. Please do not assume an animal’s gender identity.

Fine but going on the census figures it would be one transwomen for every 200 women.

Actually less than that as 1. that includes trans men and 2. The census overestimated the trans population

So the current visibility is probably about right.

That’s what I was thinking. Tbh yes 1 in 200 sounds high. So 1 in 400?

So for acting the pool would be even lower. 3 in 20 Doesn’t sound realistic at all!

Surely they realise as women at that age your days as an actor unless you have made some sort of impression in the industry it is time to give up

This is the reality of being a woman actor

There are thousands of women actors who just want to audition. Where is there article in the Newspaper

Want to be a woman then this is the reality. Stop thinking with your man brain and assuming that you will get the same privileges as men then bitching about it when you find you don’t.

Act like a woman. Accept the reality and do something else.

But if you can identify into being a female actor with no issues, what on earth is to stop you from identifying as decades younger than you would be if you 'believed in' boring old chronology?

I could actually see a big, burly, deep-voiced 70yo transwoman actor going for the part of Annie - and any casting person who wasn't fully on board with that would most clearly be a hateful phobic bigot, #nodebate.

Gosh I’d forgotten how bad that was. Was it supposed to be ironic? Or a pastiche or something ?

WolfFoxHare · 02/05/2024 17:17

They can get to fuck.

I think it's more a case of expecting to keep what you already have as an absolute right, whilst gladly hoovering up whatever other people have to add on to your own.

I think they were fully in earnest.

It really is an absolute gem! Anyone with 8 and a half minutes to spare, you won't regret it.

Actually, I'd quite like to see a gruff-voiced, 6ft, hairy-chested, five-o'clock shadow'd Elisabeth Bennett in a remake of Pride and Prejudice 😆bring it on!

😂Colin Firth playing Elizabeth Bennett? How disturbing.

AGlinnerOfHope · 02/05/2024 17:25

As a demonstration of the number of transwomen living unnoticed among us, it’s a spectacular fail. It’s reminiscent of primary school pupils signifying age with a pipe and walking stick, and masculinity with a burnt cork moustache and kipper tie.

The part where the two blokes are looming over the woman who gets rowdy in the kitchen perhaps doesn't strike quite the note they were going for.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/05/2024 17:28

There are still proportionally fewer roles for women than for men. Let's redress that balance first.

WitchyWitcherson · 02/05/2024 17:30

MirandaWild · 02/05/2024 16:13

Oops. I didn't realise that character was trans - asked my son with whom I was watching why there was only one woman in the troop

Actually I spotted at least one other woman in the background in the brotherhood scenes.

There's a transwoman in Dark (German Netflix drama), playing a transwoman prostitute. But the plot is that the person using the prostitute is a closeted gay man, so tbh it's fine by me as it's a transwoman playing a transwoman. Same with Baby Reindeer.

I haven't watched Umbrella Academy since I peaked. Really enjoyed Paige's character - was the original comic book character trans too, or did they change the series plotline so that Paige could continue in her "correct gender"?

Edited for spelling

afternoonoflife · 02/05/2024 17:35

On Fox and Owl’s film, do they not realise that it’s also very confusing for an audience? A transwoman is playing a woman (who theoretically may be read by the audience as a woman or a transwoman) who reveals themself to be trans to their neighbour. The neighbour thought the transwoman was a woman, but the neighbour themself is played by a transwoman, who presumably is supposed to read as a woman by the audience otherwise the whole concept doesn’t make sense because surely a transwoman is quite good at clocking other transwomen and also presumably wouldn’t be “anti-trans” to another transwoman? As a film it seems to expect an audience not to have eyes which is an interesting avenue to go down for a visual medium.

Esgaroth · 02/05/2024 17:43

The original thread about the trailer (from 2018 which is earlier than I thought!) was one of the funniest I can remember.

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/3393093-So-apparently-Owl-made-a-film

Anyway in reference to the original topic, I agree with what everyone else has said about trans people playing trans people. Or potentially their correct sex (wasn't Izzard still taking male roles?). There is nothing wrong with being trans. But yes, we all have eyes, which is quite the stumbling block to people playing cross-sex roles.

So apparently Owl made a film | Mumsnet

I'm thinking Owl should stick to Owl's day job (is there one?) [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=67&v=mfxnLd8cqac]]

To be fair they did this with both Grease movies!* *Those were some very adult looking teens.😁
