Couple of interesting perspectives here on BHA and the Green/SNP dynamics.

I think on pure FPTP, smaller parties like the greens and Scottish Tories get ripped off in terms of Seats per Vote. At one point the Tartan Tories had 0 seats for their usual 20% of the vote. That's clearly not fair.

My main issue with the PR as per Scotland, is that you have MSPs who are not in any way accountable to the people. Anyone at the top of the Regional List is basically unsackable, as long as their party can get a small % of the vote in an entire region. I'm thinking Patrick Harvie, as one particularly odious and egregious example.

SaffronSpice · 24/04/2024 13:20

I was more in favour of PR until I have seen the disaster that is greens in Scotland. FPTP certainly has issues too. There needs to be a way in PR to make individuals accountable to the electorate.

Yep. Maggie Chapman, too. They weren't voted in; you can't vote them out.

There were suggestions that Scotland's PR system (a modified D'Hondt', I think) was chosen by Blair as a particularly shite version of PR, specifically to discredit/undermine the idea.

It's certainly working in that respect.

I doubt that was true.

Except that Wales is in the process of pushing through an even shiter version…

PrimalLass · 24/04/2024 14:55

PR is one thing - allowing a government coalition with a party that has <5% total vote is appalling.

The Greens rather than the Scottish Greens but still, fucking hell

“them/they” appears to be quite combative in their other posts. So entirely on brand.

Madcats · 25/04/2024 08:37

Greens have just had a meeting with Humza, per R4. SNP have a cabinet meeting at 10am

Brainworm · 25/04/2024 08:47

They've just announced the coalition has broken down and is no longer in place!

TRAs brought down Sturgeon and now the coalition- wow!

lanadelgrey · 25/04/2024 09:05

So can SNP stumble on as minority government for a while? Presumably they have to have elections but at same time as GE? What would be the effect of two votes either same day or within f just a few months? One cannot but influence the other?

No elections required. The SNP were a minority government before. The whole idea behind the Scottish Parliament was that it was likely to be a minority government that worked with other parties to achieve consensus/debate which is why it is a unicameral system. That spectacularly failed.

SaffronSpice · 25/04/2024 09:29

Hopefully, this means the Scottish Parliament (as oppose to government) becomes relevant again.

SirChenjins · 25/04/2024 09:43

Oh thank god - perhaps now the SNP will stop pandering to the TRAs and get on with trying to salvage what's left of the health service, economy and education.

unlikely. Gender ideology has been embedded in the SNP since well before the last Scottish election.

Solgrass · 25/04/2024 10:05

Humza Yousafs political career is over. The SNP for years always fell in line and never questioned the leader. Times are different, they know he is weak and ineffectual. This proves his weak position. Just days ago he was stating that the Bute agreement should stay.

I suspect around the time his wife has their baby, he will step down saying something about wanting to spend more time with family etc.
But we all know this will just be a stage managed exit. Will be gone in 6 months. Forbes will come in as the new FM.
