Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

😁at the Dalek. I didn't know Starmer did voiceovers.

I think I may have just been persuaded to vote Green, purely on the basis that the local candidate positively encouraged ballot-spoiling (having heard my reason) but asked if I would mind putting a cross in the Green box and keeping the writing away from there, if there's space, in an attempt to save her deposit (which is about 40% of the local party's annual budget). They've never got more than 4% of the vote here. As she said, it may not be counted but she will argue that it should, and that will at least ensure that my ballot is scrutinised and seen by all the candidates.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 29/06/2024 13:23

If you want it to be scrutinised there has to be doubt about whether it's a valid vote or not. A clear cross in a box with writing elsewhere will not be looked at.

I was going to post the Austrialian government propaganda here, but someone got there before me https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5107984-ridiculous-propaganda-video-from-australia?reply=136381463

I’ve seen that somewhere before. I haven’t come across any women raising concerns about sharing a lift with with a trans person so I’m not sure what their point of it is. As far as I’m aware, women aren’t generally getting undressed or seeking support from other women for sexual violence they have experienced while travelling in lifts.

I wonder if they did one with a man rushing from a lift as well.

From their website:

‘Each silent gesture or unspoken word carries weight. Think about what you’re really saying’

So it is no longer just about policing language and telling us off for misgendering or saying that people can’t change sex; it’s now also about monitoring our gestures and facial expressions, or actions we might take such as stepping out of a lift. 🙄

Fuck me. I said it on another thread the other day, it’s like domestic abuse on a mass scale. I had to do this in an abusive relationship, monitor every gesture, facial expression, the tone of my voice every time I spoke for fear of upsetting him.

If someone gets upset that I silently leave a lift for any number of reasons then that’s their fucking problem to work on, not mine.

Hmmm. Well that was cunning of her and just adds to my contempt for the lot of them.

BemoreJane · 29/06/2024 15:22

Completely off subject but I’ve got Glastonbury on the TV and noticed the controversial banner “Jaffa cakes are biscuits “ which led me to notice the fantastic “girls just wanna have fundamental rights” banner very near the stage and frequently in shot.

In the time it took me to write that Cyndi (Lauper) has talked about it and it’s a foundation she’s set up for woman's rights all over the world. I’ll investigate it further.

I’ve not seen @Helleofabore post for a couple of days, and it looks like @Boiledbeetle hasn’t posted since the 23rd, I’m hoping they’ve just name changed, or taking a short break.

< not a stalker > 👀

I've been wondering that too, and thinking how odd it is that I feel a twinge of concern for the wellbeing of a usernameConfused

It does feel a little stalker-ish but I think it's just evidence of the camaraderie between us anonymous posters. The power of words, eh?

And in BoiledBeetle's case, the power of surrealistic images of incredibly cute and clever rodents😁

Joining you in sending a friendly👋

Come back soon, BoiledBeetle - the AI's going nuts without you.

Maybe they're both on holiday or have covid, like half the country seem to at the moment.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/06/2024 18:08

Is the AI on acid or something? 😅

ifIwerenotanandroid · 29/06/2024 18:09

I have no idea! I'm giving it very clear instructions.

lcakethereforeIam · 29/06/2024 18:14

National Elk Service?

Missing them both too! 😟

I note that the vote-scolding and particularly the spoiled-ballot-scolding throughout the site is reaching feverish levels of Righteous Sneery Knob Halo-Polishing. (I'm not suggesting the Righteous political supporters are worried; I 100% believe a Labour super-victory is nailed on.) But rather, what I said waaaay upthread - the Rapture is upon us and the Righteous are so close to their fireworks-and-trains-rushing-through-tunnels peak.

The scolders are tripling up and more on thread duty at the moment, whereas there used to be only one or two per thread. As someone said - it’s like the batshit-signal went up.

duc748 · 30/06/2024 09:51

Absolutely, I remarked on it on one of the threads. You don't change hearts and minds that way, so presumably the objective is just to piss people off?

mach2 · 30/06/2024 10:01

I had a family member a bit like that. One had to have a cheery expression around them and know which temper triggers to avoid. I hope Australians don't put up with it.

mach2 · 30/06/2024 10:29

😬

lcakethereforeIam · 30/06/2024 10:46

On a lighter note, while trying to find a better article on the above, I googled 'dementia BSO' and the first hit was Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra!

lcakethereforeIam · 30/06/2024 14:07

Just read this article in the Telegraph, I think the key phrase is 'trauma bonding', I wonder if the 'sunk cost fallacy' might play a part in similar situations

www.telegraph.co.uk/family/life/victoria-cayzer-anne-craig-life-coach-false-memories/

https://archive.ph/TZEZW some walls are only fantasies, you can't break them you just hurt yourself

This quote is interesting

when my cousin left his elite boarding school, he was warned that he and his fellow pupils – heavily institutionalised, intelligent young adults – were exceptionally susceptible to the sort of psychological coercion that draws people into cults.

If it's true it might explain why apparently well educated people become tras. It's not explained or explored further in the article and I haven't time to click all the links.

I believe in this country, if you're careful what you call yourself, completely unqualified people can set themselves up as counsellors. They can get a bullshit diploma from The Extra Meditation University (TEMU) if they want to be a bit extra.

The first link takes you to an article giving a little information on the Eunuch Maker, his background. Frightening how googling 'body dysmorphia' served vulnerable people right up to him. I expect the top Google hits still don't go anywhere I would consider healthy.
