Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I happened across this (sorry the site is a cluttered car crash)

https://www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/news/health/dementia-risk-women-linked-common-9373516?int_source=amp_continue_reading&int_medium=amp&int_campaign=continue_reading_button#amp-readmore-target

Although the article doesn't mention females who identify as some flavour of trans, it's pretty obvious they're going to be a cohort at risk. I think this has already come up in discussions, on this site and elsewhere, as a possible affect of 'gender affirming care'.

It's annoying they didn't link to the actual study or even mention the authors' names. I searched for it because the article didn't mention whether the participants were taking oestrogen or not which is, err, kind of important to know.

The study states, 'In our study, 96% of the women with BSO were treated with estrogen (primarily oral conjugated equine estrogen), for a median of 10 years after BSO; however, this type and duration of hormonal treatment after BSO does not seem to be sufficient to prevent structural changes in the medial temporal lobe later in life.' https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/fullarticle/2707475#:~:text=Women%20who%20undergo%20bilateral%20salpingo%2Doophorectomy%20(BSO)%20before%20the,associated%20neurological%20diseases%2C%20including%20dementia.

Do female trans individuals who have BSO take oestrogen? Or only testosterone? Even without BSO, the suppression of oestrogen via GnRH agonists or testosterone therapy carries many risks, and the long-term consequences are not yet fully understood.

This case-control study combines portions of 2 existing cohorts to investigate medial temporal lobe structure, white matter lesion load, and β-amyloid deposition in older women who underwent bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy before age 50 years and befor...

Billy Bragg demonstrates yet again the shallowness of his understanding:

Desperate to be relevant and calling his fellow men to attack women.

VictorianBigot · 30/06/2024 16:31

I believe in this country, if you're careful what you call yourself, completely unqualified people can set themselves up as counsellors. They can get a bullshit diploma from The Extra Meditation University (TEMU) if they want to be a bit extra.

Yeah, someone I knew did this. She has a BSc in psychology and has a certificate in spiritual counselling from the Centre of Excellence which you can buy for £27.50. She also has some sort of diploma in intuitive eating counselling, whatever that is. She calls herself a therapist and psychologist (the type of psychologist varies depending on what online course she's selling, could be Counselling Psychologist, Sports Psychologist or Nutritional Psychologist or whatever) and counsels women with eating disorders. Quite scary.

I love the thought of obtaining a diploma from TEMU Grin

So this is my Labour candidate.

https://womenofdorset.blogspot.com/2024/06/lloyd-hatton-south-dorset-response-to.html

it’s not good - he doesn’t get it, talks more about trans people than women’s rights, and (my pet hate) refers to the toxicity of the debate without acknowledging that it’s largely not women being toxic, unless it’s toxic to refuse to pipe down. Were it not for this issue, I would vote Labour and I like him otherwise.

This the only non-equivocator, and I won’t vote for him.

https://womenofdorset.blogspot.com/2024/06/richard-drax-south-dorset-response-to.html

Genuinely don’t know what to do.

This is the Lib Dem (local teacher) and I won’t vote for him but the race is between the first two in any case https://womenofdorset.blogspot.com/2024/06/matt-bell-south-dorset-response-to.html

But Women of Dorset are doing a great job in assembling the information.

It's just a template, isn't it? They all say exactly the same thing, respect all round, toxicity...🙄

I'm glad he 'supports' Labour's proposed changes to the GRA. What are they, then? Does he know? I don't. Or maybe he supports them without knowing what they are.

Pathetic, isn't he?

Perhaps someone who was a lesbian in the 1980s would like to come on here and tell us about the wonderful support that they got from Billy and his mates back then? Support that they should now be passing on uncritically to an entirely different social group? And it sounds like he would also appreciate an apology for you being so ungrateful..

But he's so far into his schtick and so identified with it that he daren't budge an inch in the direction of fact or common sense, he'd just disintegrate into a pile of dust or something..

I think that that has already happened. Describing him as irrelevant is over promoting him.

I'm currently listening to the audiobook of Jung Chang's "Wild Swans" (highly recommended if you haven't read it). She talks about her mother's experiences as part of the Chinese communist revolution, and the difficulties her mother experienced becoming a party member, how she had to take part in self-criticism sessions endlessly and sit and be criticised for what Orwell at around the same time was writing about as "wrong think". So much about her mother's need to be ultra-careful about what she said and did and thought made me think about how that is reflected today when we are supposed to police our speech and our thinking and "reframe our trauma" to accommodate men's fantasies of womanhood.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s interesting (and alarming) to see the range of ways this is affecting a huge cross section of people in their everyday lives. And that’s before we have a government that supports this damaging ideology. It’s frightening to think where we’re headed if labour are serious and haven’t got the message that more gender identity ideology will be deeply unpopular. I am worried we are headed into the biggest battle yet.

I read that years ago. One thing that struck me is once the Party had declared someone persona non grata, everyone - close family included - had to "draw a line" under them or face suspicion themselves.

Like cancelling.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 30/06/2024 22:56

I'm catching up on Radio 4 programme- Great Lives, about Queen Emma (fascinating woman - married to both Æthelred and Cnut, had significant amounts of power, and wrote extensively about it giving us a rare first-hand.woman's voice from that time) featuring Prof Alice Roberts and Prof Janina Ramirez. They've just got to a bit about osteoaechaeology on a box of bones in Wnchester cathedral.

Ramirez: 'there was [sic] 1300 pieces of bones in this chest. Only 1 set of bones was female.'

Roberts: 'They have found some female remains. Not a whole female skeleton but a good proportion of it, including the left pelvic bone - the pelvic bone is the best part of the body for determining sex and this does look like a female pelvic bone.'

I don't know how they handle the cognitive dissonance.

Well this is tragic

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-67752264

I've been intermittently checking this case because Bronwyn's photo looked a little off. It seems Bronwyn is male and his name is actually different. Perhaps he detransitioned while on remand? I don't believe the media would have used a male name and pronouns (although there's still some 'they/their' hedging) without the accused allowing it.

A woman is dead at the hand of her disturbed son and a daughter is left to grieve her. At least it's not another cat killer. What an awful situation.

Earlier reporting had the person accused of committing the crime described as a woman or the victim's daughter. This could have been hellish for her actual daughter. People may have understandably believed that she was the one who had stabbed her mum.

A lot of the reports made when the crime was initially reported seem to have been memory holed.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 01/07/2024 10:07

That's really weird. Do any men get these enemas from the slide?

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 01/07/2024 10:39

The Aus story says men have suffered enemas, but obvs not gynaecological damage:

ThreeWordHarpy · 01/07/2024 11:03

So two factors. One A sign just saying no women does not explain why it’s higher risk for women and not just sexism. Yes it will need explained to many many women about the risk of high pressure water douches. Two the risk seems to be lower if you wear a more substantial garment that is cut short style around the legs. I’d guess a short sleeved/legged wetsuit would be ideal due to the much thicker fabric diffusing the water should you uncross your legs.

Changing the signage to reflect a policy of “ensure your fanny is properly covered up” may be a bit trickier though. Grin

CrossPurposes · 01/07/2024 11:07

From the USA Today article "The gynecologists who spoke to USA TODAY agreed that people with vaginas face greater risks of these water slide injuries."

I hate what the mainstream media is doing and I hate the people who are not saying no to this abuse of language in the name of inclusivity.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/07/2024 11:18

Tbf if a post op tw went on one of these. I don't know how robust their surgeries are. Although calling it a vagina is obviously ridiculous in the sane world.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 01/07/2024 11:38

If these slides were harming men they’d likely be closed down and redesigned until the slides were deemed safe.
They wouldn’t just add a kitschy little ‘no men’ sign and be done with it, but I guess that’s the ‘default human’ stuff at work again?
