Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

It's witless, unthinking rubbish, though, isn't it? When people parrot, trans rights are human rights, I generally say, exactly what rights do you think trans people should have, in addition to the ones they already enjoy? And the response is usually, rights they already have, thanks to the Equality Act, or, more rarely, self-id. Which they can be invited to justify.

Agree. Her tweet just reads like all the same parroted platitudes we used to see by TRSOHers in the Old Place and here in FWR.

The last election I actually voted at I felt so self-conscious at all the scribbling I was doing. It seemed really loud! So, if you're thinking you might have to spoil your vote, that alone would make postal voting attractive to me. I actually tore up my ballot and took it home with me at the recent local elections, partly because of that, and i genuinely couldn't stomach voting for any of the parties. I'm trying to work myself up to voting <shudder> for the Tories. I have a letter from the incumbent that ticks all the GC boxes. I think she's toast regardless, we'll probably flip LD. Still waiting to hear back from the Labour candidate.

Edited

I felt the same the last time I spoiled my ballot! There was only me, the staff and one other voter in the room and you could've heard a pin drop if it weren't for my frantic scribbling.

duc748 · 28/06/2024 12:19

You could have hummed a merry tune whilst you did it. I'm sure something suitable would come to mind. 😀

lcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2024 13:16

I was just picturing the poll bods wondering exactly how I was spelling 'X'. Wouldn't have surprised me if my ballot had drops of sweat on it along with my short essay on women's rights (with footnotes and a bibliography) 😁

For a long time I wanted to put a tick in the box against the candidate I wanted. It went against the grain to put a cross (=wrong). Pathetic, isn't it?😂

It was oddly adrenaline-inducing. My hands were shaking slightly as I dropped it in the box 😳

I've gone right off Janina Ramirez, too. https://x.com/DrJaninaRamirez/status/1806282426999554420

Oh no, not Janina Ramirez. Soon there will be no one left I like!

Omg! Yes! I'm having flashbacks. It was so quiet.

lcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2024 15:07

Bugger name change fail! I'm also occasionally @Cakenessthrustuponme.

I think the 'What is a Woman' results are in if anyone has time to check.

SqueakyDinosaur · 28/06/2024 15:49

But presumably you also sometimes achieve cakeness?

lcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2024 17:09

Definitely not assigned Cake at birth!

anyolddinosaur · 28/06/2024 18:17

Thank god cake is not assigned at birth. I can imagine if assigned the wrong sort of cake I might wish to transition to a different cake. Are jaffa cakes proof that cake is not binary?

lcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2024 18:28

When I was at the birth of my two (not to boast but my role was pretty crucial), I wish someone had thought to assign me a cake.

VictorianBigot · 28/06/2024 19:20

I was considering changing my username to AssignedTerfAtBirth but I'm too attached to this one.

WomanXXWorldsOriginsofMothersofAllNations · 29/06/2024 07:38

I’ve not seen @Helleofabore post for a couple of days, and it looks like @Boiledbeetle hasn’t posted since the 23rd, I’m hoping they’ve just name changed, or taking a short break.

< not a stalker > 👀

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/06/2024 07:55

I saw Boiledbeetle on twitter yesterday, I think.

mach2 · 29/06/2024 08:00

Did someone mention cake?

Asking for a friend.

VictorianBigot · 29/06/2024 08:48

Does anyone know what happened to themostbeautifuldog aka spart?

Winterborne74 · 29/06/2024 09:02

I see her on Twitter occasionally, but I think she must have moved on for now. Wasn’t she very busy with Tribunal Tweets and real world activism? Perhaps she will re-emerge in future when she has more time?

Ah, maybe. I haven't heard from her IRL for a couple of years either and hoped she was ok.

lcakethereforeIam · 29/06/2024 11:12

Hang on to your hats vipers. There may be an alternative to vote for!

Those in Bedfordshire though...you might want to look away.

VictorianBigot · 29/06/2024 11:24

LOL. Climate is one of my main concerns, alas I am not in Bedfordshire. Are xenomorphs also running? Hell, I’d consider voting for them at this point.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/06/2024 11:34

I’d consider voting for them at this point.

God, yeah. Me too.

‘She described puberty blocks as “the most natural medicine”’.

As someone who is currently taking Zoladex for endometriosis and PMDD, which is apparently one of the most common puberty blockers, it really fucking isn’t and I was told repeatedly about the risks. The thought of subjecting a child to what I’ve been through in the last 3.5 months makes me sick.
