Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Kucinghitam · 16/04/2024 12:11

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I just switched on Panorama. Anyone watching? Terrible treatment of kids at a Wirral school.

How do you find people you're following on twitter? I have to type "Emma Hilton on Twitter" into Google, for example...

I'm sure there's an easier way but that's how I do it, although I do the search in Twitter rather than Google. Which means that I have to remember your bloody Twitter name when you mention you've posted something on Twitter!

I really should read the instructions at some point. There must be an idiots guide on the internet somewhere!

I'm not watching, but it's the lead story on the BBC website today. Absolutely horrendous. What goes on in the heads of these people? Do they go into these jobs with the intention of abusing vulnerable people? Or do they start off OK and then get a taste for power?

Well, it's a nice little earner, for one thing. But where is the oversight?

I'm six minutes in and appalled

Hmm, yes! I've looked it up, but can't find anything very useful. I can't even find my own posts...

bignosebignose · 17/06/2024 21:13

Noting that many many more women vote left wing so you should expect the Guardians core base to be female.

This sounds instinctively likely and may historically be the case but based on a few polls I've looked at there's not as much difference (though there is a bit) as you might expect. Age is a much bigger divide.

Click on your profile picture icon and you should then be able to see and click on your follower/following count… your posts should be visible too.

But when you follow 4000 people that feature is useless for actually finding someone! And my posts are just mushed in with everything else I've reposted!

I'm sure there must be a simple way to just see my stuff, and stuff from a certain date, but I'm, like Sinner, stumped!

MouseMinge · 17/06/2024 22:40

Briefly, before the car billionnaire bought the twitters they'd put in a new thing where you could dislike a tweet which I quite liked. The car billionnaire got rid of it and it's just another reason for me to dislike him a lot. Sometimes I don't want to go to the bother of posting a reposte to someone who will just call me a nazi or something similar and definitely a terf - which obvs doesn't bother me but hey ho - but just want to register that I do not like their nonsense. That's all I have to say on the Twitter thing really - can't call it X, it's a fucking stupid name - other than I don't post much, do some reposting and mostly use it to keep up with my favourite terfs and to watch a bit of cat/dog/animals in general being cute videos for when the darkness is a bit too dark. I watched a cat look utterly dumbfounded today as a tiny tortoise or turtle whizzed up to him on a teeny skateboard. It was rather wonderful.

Oh, my daughter sent me that a few weeks ago!

Thanks, I'll try that. I haven't bothered to put a photo up.

I've just been reading about the, imo, pyrrhic victory that has seen Baillie Gifford and Barclays withdraw from sponsorship of various festivals. Some activists are probably celebrating, others realise they may have seriously damaged the viability of these events. Did they really expect these companies to divest themselves from oil, Israel? Yes, apparently they did.

Anyway, that's kind of besides my point. I just googled Baillie Gifford Stonewall. Well, no surprise it's rainbows for days.

Activists....sic 'em!

This is a good read - Jean Hachet on Labour's manifesto: https://thecritic.co.uk/culture-war-what-is-it-good-for/

She sums it up well, saying that Starmer appears to think he can tell women to be quiet, because he's tired, and they will be. No, Keir, we won't. HTH.

Culture war, what is it good for? | Jean Hatchet | The Critic Magazine

Last week saw the release of the Labour Party manifesto. Many women had anticipated this with a growing sense of dread. It delivered on that anticipation of doom most effectively.

SinnerBoy · 18/06/2024 08:42

I've just read it on the dedicated thread, it's good food for thought.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 18/06/2024 08:49

I hadn't seen that and will go and read. I'm still lurgified and my brain is only operating at half speed.

bignosebignose · 18/06/2024 10:54

I accidentally found myself listening to Women's Hour for a while this morning, a panel of politicians. None of them would give a yes or no answer to accepting the Cass Review and even the Reform woman said that children should be allowed to socially trans in schools as long as their parent(s) agreed. Obviously better than without parents even knowing but still. General be kind, live and let live, toxic debate, "folk" don't care who uses what bathroom vibes all over the shop. Verdict: there's a loooong way to go.

duc748 · 18/06/2024 11:13

Oh, that's disappointing.

bignosebignose · 18/06/2024 11:29

To be a little more charitable, they all agreed with Cass to one degree or another. Though it is of course very possible to cherrypick from it even if you're a TRA.

The trouble is that polling doesn't highlight this as a key issue and Starmer thinks (probably correctly) that it can rely on enough people wanting rid of the Tories and trusting him (at least more than them) on the NHS, etc., to not to get involved in the pesky toxic debate thing.

Britinme · 18/06/2024 13:34

Sadly, I think @bignosebignose is right here. Those of us on MN and in particular on FWR have paid close attention to this issue, but most people haven't, and even if they have more awareness of it still think that getting rid of the Tories is more important.

We're in a similar situation on my side of the Atlantic in that the Dems are captured on this issue and the Republican states opposing it are pretty repellent, but I'm still going to vote Democrat in November because the prospect of a Trump presidency is too nightmarish.

duc748 · 18/06/2024 13:53

It's an even bleaker choice for US voters than in the UK, I'd say.

anyolddinosaur · 19/06/2024 09:18

Women's rights campaigners in the US have a choice between 2 steaming piles of shit. In the uk we have more steaming piles of shit to choose between, depending on where we live. So I dont see the US choice as worse., although it is not any better.
