Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Eh? He wants a 'queer' race category? Do spicy straights run slower, do gay men have to flap down the course in an exageratedly camp manner? Sounds like homophobic nonsense to me.

duc748 · 16/06/2024 11:48

I imagine The Goodies could have done a version.

The absolute nerve of complaining that your identity isn't being celebrated!

The concept of fair sporting competition, like everything else that isn't about "Me, me, me", seems quite beyond them.

I’m Old Labour so I regard the upcoming election result (if it goes as predicted) as relief in having a not-Tory government, but am in no way celebrating as I naively did in 1997.

Call me a miserable cynic, but I was 27 then and very much pleased, though I disliked Blair quite a lot. Everyone was dancing and I said, "Give it a year or 18 months and there'll be all the same scandals as the last lot."

And lo....

We’re the same age! I expect I’ll be staying up to watch the results come in, and anticipating the “Portillo” moment, but this time round I’ll join you on the cynic bench.

Well done for assuming good intent is the reason for those posters posts @Kucinghitam , not sure I could manage to be that positive.

Oh, I don't think it's good intent Wink - I think it comes from the exact same place as the Rapture stickers. Holier-than-thou, Chosen-Ones-smuggery. Wanting to preach to the unsaved unbelievers, but not in a way that would save them, because they want the unchosen to be left behind, where they can rue their failure to believe in the Righteous Things and suffer their punishment. It's less fun being sucked off to Paradise if you can't also look back down upon the tortured wrongthinkers.

Bloody loved the Goodies. Didn't Monty Python do an upper class twit race?

I saw this (haven't read the story) and it amused me. Was he wearing his trousers on his head?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 17/06/2024 12:43

His trousers came down while he was breaking into a shop and his tattooed arse was caught on the shop's camera. From there it was easy to find his identity by simply checking his tattoos on sm. He sounds horrible, an entitled little shit.

duc748 · 17/06/2024 13:18

Arf! 😂

ThreeWordHarpy · 17/06/2024 14:02

I regret the demise of the Fair Cop thread. If nothing else because there were some excellent posts by @redtoothbrush that were worth saving for posterity.

Don't worry, they were read and absorbed by others. That means they have gone in and more people get It.

I'm sure the subjects will come round again soon enough on another thread anyway. Still a couple of weeks until the election and I'm sure we'll get a lot of somewhat ungracious comments after too.

On the one hand yes I think there was plenty of value in the thread. On the other hand I felt the entire thread stood for too long in the first place and was created on the premise of bad faith as it was an example of almost perfect 'Reductio ad Hitlerum'.

In the meantime, swat up on this lot.

I'm sorry for the loss of @RedToothBrush 's posts and, on a personal note, my 'the paywall has fallen 😢' link. I think I'll be forgiven if I recycle it one day. On the bright side, I don't think anyone posted any recipes.

RedToothBrush · 17/06/2024 14:35

I'm trying to think what else I said in that thread.

I talked about the left and right wing media and holding power to account and how they must reflect the public to a certain amount - they can't lead too strongly otherwise the attempt just bombs with financial implications.

I talked about the Mail still being UK centric whereas the Guardian had become more us centric possibly because it had lost touch and was struggling to connect with voters. And how the mail had a majority female readship which no other newspaper has. And that I didn't think it was an age related thing either. Noting that many many more women vote left wing so you should expect the Guardians core base to be female.

What else was there?

Oh yeah lots of stuff about how Brexit marked a break in British political traditions leading to a change from left/ring economic split to a more identitarian social division in politics, the fall of the liberal centre and the rise of the Authoritarian Left and Authoritarian right.

Some stuff about Orwell and him being more worried about the left than the right in the uk. Stuff about how the UK public is socially conservative generally liking conformity but accepting of difference unless told what to do. There is a significant section of the British public who do not respond well to being told what they must do and must think.

What else? Remind me.

RedToothBrush · 17/06/2024 14:40

I think I did some stuff about the evolution of rights in Europe v the US which is really relevant too.

BezMills · 17/06/2024 15:01

I thought it was also an example of the strength through diversity in FWR.

In tralala subreddits you'll get blocked and banned in one post. On twitter you'll get terblocked for liking a post.
Here you can shitpost 100s a day, create garbage threads, spaff away all credibility until everyone is so sick of your shit that you don't get enough responses, and then namechange with the same account and do it all again. If, hypothetically, that was your thing.

On twitter you get terfblocked for following the wrong account! You can even decide to watch other to 'know your enemy' and thus improve your own counter arguments.

I don't tweet at all and have still be blocked by a number of accounts.

duc748 · 17/06/2024 15:34

Nothing I've seen recently does anything to suggest that my early decision to have nothing whatsoever to do with Twitter was anything other than a wise one. If only for the sake of my blood-pressure.

AlisonDonut · 17/06/2024 15:39

I'm sure there will be another 'nazi adjacent person rage post' thread along very shortly. Just wait here on the wall with a packet of tunnucks and do a sudoku or something and it will be here before you know it.

Britinme · 17/06/2024 15:50

Twitter is now making your likes private so others can't see what you like. I like that.

CorruptedCauldron · 17/06/2024 15:51

@RedToothBrush I am on X and never tweet, like or engage, and I don’t follow anyone controversial, so nobody blocks me. What I have done though is set up a private group and added a bunch of pro-women campaigners to it - JK, Bindel, Stock, Joyce, Glinner, Dennis, Sharron, Martina, etc. People I add don’t know they are in the group, they don’t get a notification, and nobody knows I have the group as only I can see it. The great thing is it means I get to see all the tweets I’m interested in in one go, without arousing the suspicion of any watchful Eyes / Serena Joys / Aunt Lydias.

Britinme · 17/06/2024 15:59

Ooh that's a good idea!

I follow nearly 2000 people on a huge variety of subjects. Just finding those follows in my list would be a hassle to set up at this point!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 17/06/2024 16:16

I follow loads on there and vanishingly few have followed me back but that's not what I'm there for, just want to read what's being posted.

How do you find people you're following on twitter? I have to type "Emma Hilton on Twitter" into Google, for example...
