Thanks so much for the commentary. Apologies if this link's already been posted but I couldn't locate a video recording of the actual debate in the Telegraph link at the top, and I wanted to watch it in full since I missed it live. This is the link I found on ParliamentLiveTV. The debate starts at 17.23.

This stuff is absolutely nuclear

this is it. It all fell over in a week!

I'm going to sit and read the entire debate tomorrow, but I just skipped ahead and treated myself to the LRM slapdown.

Gorgeous.

Victoria Atkins and I may differ on many (most?) political issues, but as part of the Pissed Off Sisterhood of a Certain Age, I salute her work tonight.

I'm pretty sure VA was looking directly at LRM when she castigated the other bench for tutting.

I never thought I would see such strong forceful condemnation in the HOC.

I feel a bit tearful.

Is it such a mad idea that we do, have an actual gathering, maybe …..

I went all shy when I was at a feminist gathering where Ash Regan was also an attendee so I can only imagine what I'd be like with some of the greats on here!

Karensalright · 15/04/2024 22:47

Tipping point innit, children.

Karensalright · 15/04/2024 22:49

Waitwhat the women on here are okay with plebs lol

He truly is awful.

<happy sigh>

And so to bed.

It's been a good day, vipers. And tomorrow we go again.

I'm quite amused by the thought that you might all turn out to be people I know in real life.

Is it significant that she referred to him as 'Member', as opposed to Honourable Anything?

tobee · 15/04/2024 22:56

Well I'm only just beginning to not be scared to talk about this to friends in real life Shock@KohlaParasaurus !

LunaNorth · 15/04/2024 22:58

Wude words outside LRM’s house?

Oh that is a shame. Sorry to hear that. Still, wude words can be quickly sorted out, unlike, say, atrophied reproductive organs, brittle bones and cancer.

tobee · 15/04/2024 22:58

I think only some MPs are technically “honourable” @teawamutu . Most are just "the member opposite" for eg??

😂

Hopefully if it was the slang meaning of the word member, it would fit!

RayonSunrise · 15/04/2024 23:04

This entire evening has been a sight for sore eyes.

I echo everyone who has said we may finally have set a toe on the path to the end of the beginning, but it's taken a long time to get here! And now, to bed to rest and regroup. Congrats, vipers!

BusyMummy001 · 15/04/2024 23:06

Thanks everyone for running this splendid thread - missed most of it (dinner, teens, etc). Catching up now everyone’s buggered off to bed.

I don't believe we're at that tipping point yet. I'd be thrilled to be wrong. Preference falsification reports that when structures fall, they fall quickly.

Preference falsification, according to the economist Timur Kuran, is the act of misrepresenting one’s wants under perceived social pressures. It happens frequently in everyday life, such as when we tell the host of a dinner party that we are enjoying the food when we actually find it bland. In Private Truths, Public Lies, Kuran argues convincingly that the phenomenon not only is ubiquitous but has huge social and political consequences. Drawing on diverse intellectual traditions, including those rooted in economics, psychology, sociology, and political science, Kuran provides a unified theory of how preference falsification shapes collective decisions, orients structural change, sustains social stability, distorts human knowledge, and conceals political possibilities.

A common effect of preference falsification is the preservation of widely disliked structures. Another is the conferment of an aura of stability on structures vulnerable to sudden collapse. When the support of a policy, tradition, or regime is largely contrived, a minor event may activate a bandwagon that generates massive yet unanticipated change.

In distorting public opinion, preference falsification also corrupts public discourse and, hence, human knowledge. So structures held in place by preference falsification may, if the condition lasts long enough, achieve increasingly genuine acceptance. The book demonstrates how human knowledge and social structures co-evolve in complex and imperfectly predictable ways, without any guarantee of social efficiency.

And these 9000 people all have family. Many of their family members have been affected, often in very distressing ways.

Yes.

I’ve been wavering between anxious and sad since 2019 when we first found out that school had secretly transed my stepdaughter but I think tonight I found my rage.

Not while the government continues with its sterling efforts to avoid dealing with the infected blood scandal.

Vive42 · 15/04/2024 23:16

Does this mean the end of ‘chest-feeding’ and other such misnomers might be on the cards soon?

Needmoresleep · 15/04/2024 23:24

It wasn’t that long ago that David TC Davies MP hosted Feminist groups in the House of Commons because they has been cancelled by Millwall and could not find another venue. Six years? At the time he was the only MP prepared to stick his head above the parapet.

And now….astonishing.

Of course they all knew, all along. I’m glad our politicians have come to their senses. I’m glad we can be less fearful of a Labour administration.

Today we can celebrate.

Tomorrow we need to think about the collateral damage: damaged children; pointless legal cases; jobs lost; careers stunted; sportswomen denied; the damage to our institutions and organisations, and demand action.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/04/2024 23:25

theDudesmummy · 15/04/2024 20:01

Although the AGPs can surely now detach themselves from the children's health issue (which was just a smokescreen/collateral damage for them from the outset) and plough their own furrow, being largely a far more powerful group of people than mentally ill children, namely middle-aged white men? They aren't going to go away are they? What now for them?

I'm not sure they will back off children until schools, the DfE, Ofsted etc make them back off. That will take a while given the level of capture.

It will happen eventually as sterilising children - mainly lesbian and gay children - can never be sustained as a societal aspiration.

I'm still finding it a little difficult to believe this is all being aired in Parliament.

It's extraordinary!!!

I've just finished watching so I'm currently at the start of the thread, and no doubt it's moved on a lot but I agree with you totally. I feel like I've accidentally slipped into an alternate universe lately!

theDudesmummy · 15/04/2024 23:35

@MrsOvertonsWindow I think it will take a depressingly longer time than we would like. The euphoria of today is justified and many children may be saved, but the captured institutions can't just reverse ferret instantly, nor will they even try, given who is in positions of power. As I said before, do not underestimate men in pursuit of sexual satisfaction. Or pursuit of power (inc misogyny) for that matter.

Scared kids or scarred for life kids. Which do you prefer Stella?
