Thanks so much for the commentary. Apologies if this link's already been posted but I couldn't locate a video recording of the actual debate in the Telegraph link at the top, and I wanted to watch it in full since I missed it live. This is the link I found on ParliamentLiveTV. The debate starts at 17.23.

This is all tremendous. But I am finding it difficult to believe that it took Cass, great as she has been, to convince so many people that they were entirely wrong, when it was in fact blindingly obvious all along. Did they really believe it before? Do they really disbelieve it now? Or was it all just expediency? Do people realise how batshit it all looks?

We will never know. However we are supposed to be rolling out the golden bridge. So although we wont forget which people were stupid and what they said, we are now supposed to let them think their batshittery has been forgotten.

And if LRM does indeed go for the prime minister job one day, we should do our level best to get his previous words out there, with receipts.

Waitwhat23 · 15/04/2024 21:20

Fantastic thread - thank you.

There's been so many times over the last couple of years where we've thought 'that's it, this must be the point where sense returns' and it hasn't happened but this actually seems like a turning point now, at least in England and Wales.

Crouton19 · 15/04/2024 21:23

So a Lib Dem was there; Christine Jardine had this to say:

At its heart, the Cass report sadly highlights the low standard of care for our young people who were caught up in a toxic debate. There were long waiting lists, and the debate seeped into the staffing of the medical profession. Does the Secretary of State agree that we have to look at the wellbeing of our children holistically? How will she overcome the recruitment and staffing problems that have been created by this toxic debate?

I would love to be a fly on the wall at LDHQ as they work out how to spin this so they come out clean.

TheSnakeCharmer · 15/04/2024 21:27

This scandal happened because too many adults put their desire for social approval above the welfare of children"

This is the best summary of the whole debacle. Wimps!! It's amazing just how many people are starting to suddenly get braver, whilst still hiding behind the likes of JK Rowling etc. they're happy to still lurk in the shadows though and let others take the flack!

I think they’ve already been getting their back up plan ready by adding “intersex” to the rainbow acronym, that started last year and they’ve tried pushing “trans and intersex” inclusion policies.

The "I" has been there for ages but yes, the Scottish Hate Crime bill added variations of sex as the last protected characteristic and I was surprised nobody else said WTF? I did wonder: since when was there any hate on people with DSDs? Unless they are males with DSDs in women's sports, of course. Then some have issues.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 15/04/2024 21:29

I know there's a lot more to do but i have to say I'm wild with excitement. I've been banging on that this would be the worst medical scandal since Thalidomide for over a decade. And finally it's all come on top. If I wasn't so old and cronky I'd be dancing round the kitchen!

RedToothBrush · 15/04/2024 21:30

Do you all remember how political parties and MPs told us that the subject was a niche one and it never came up?

Well there were an awful lot of MPs who quoted concerns from constituents today.

Also I'm guessing that things like the Blood Transfusion scandal only directly affected a small number of people in relative terms and only a small number of people contacted their MPs about that. It didn't stop it being a major medical scandal though did it?

Its fascinating to see the row back on this.

Also, we've heard the PM explicitly say theres been an issue. But where's Starmer on a significant Medical and Education Scandal?

Again. Still not giving this the attention this is deserving of.

soupfiend · 15/04/2024 21:31

Im not sure I see long waitings lists as such a scandal and shock.

It means fewer children were seen by a negligent and dangerous service.

Its also on a par with a whole number of health departments, we're all on long waiting lists, many of us unable to work while this is going on

Of course CAMHS long waiting lists or lack of service is a scandal but unfortunately they seem to be instant validationers in my experience.

Their desire for social approval ahead of the welfare of children AND prioritised the hurty feelings of vocal adults over basic safeguarding principles.

My feeling about the Stella Creasy point was yes, they'll have to wait longer but that also gives them time to grow out of these feelings and desist - as per the Cass Review's point - rather than being medically trans.

To me its rather like being in a cue to be turned into a cybermen. How is it a bad thing if the production line breaks down for a while? It just gives more time for The Dr to come along and save everyone.

Unless of course, its David Tennant in which case, he'd flip the switch and turn everyone into cybermen in double quick time before blowing them all up in order to save the universe.

RethinkingLife · 15/04/2024 21:37

Well, this is an interesting development. And reinforces my concerns about how deeply enmeshed ideologues and TRAs are in health and social care.

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), which is the “professional body” and trade union which represents member physiotherapists in the UK, has launched its first “definitive position statement on transphobia” with the publication of its “position statement on transphobia.” The publication has sent a chill through the profession, as anonymous whistleblowers express concerns about censorship.
The “transphobia” statement describes the aim of “eradicating [transphobia] from our profession” by instructing members that they “must raise concerns about colleagues” if they think that the colleague’s “personal values, biases and beliefs” have led them to “discriminate” against others, with discrimination including “denying” someone’s “gender identity or refusing to accept it.”

That was a stunning side-step around the fact that if the Lib Dems had their way, lots more children and young people would have been rendered sterile, breastless and with impaired intellectual development.

An article in the Telegraph

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/15/victoria-atkins-puberty-blockers-crackdown-doctors/

https://archive.ph/qLpAm

I hope they stop the wild west prescribing of wrong sex hormones too.

She's met with the GMC. Threatening to have Doctors struck off! Can she do that?

I know the NHS is devolved in Scotland and Wales but, I assume, Doctors in those countries still come under the aegis of the GMC. Could this be a way of fettling the Sandyford?

Doctors who prescribe puberty blockers to children could be struck off, says Health Secretary

Victoria Atkins says ‘nothing is off the table’ to ensure that ‘clinicians who subscribe to gender ideology’ cannot ‘get around the rules’

Neale Hanvey MP powerfully lays out the case for this area predominantly adversely affecting LGB youth. His heroism and bravery speaking up for us continues. Thank you AT JNHanvey

Sir Bill Cash "This is about telling the truth". Secretary of state says she completely agrees that work must now start in earnest to drive change.

FUCK ME. I think I just agree with Bill Cash for the first time in my life.

I know how you feel Red, I found myself agreeing with him AND Sammy Wilson for the first time in my life 😵

Apart from the odd few holdouts such as Butler, Oswald, and Moyle, I felt this was a sensible debate that refrained from acrimony. I really do hope the calls for a public enquiry grow, are listened to and acted upon.

DameMaud · 15/04/2024 21:40

So wonderful to witness the sense of the adults being back in the room!

I thought VA was just brilliant! A perfect mix of calm thoughtfulness and fire.

What a rollercoaster that this is only a few weeks after the excitement and deflation of the private members/ferrets debacle.

Cass Report has had an impact in my workplace already, an FE college. Leadership had already used Safe Schools Alliance, Sex Matters and Transgender Trend resources to help formulate respond to the recent government consultation.

This week they are putting the brakes on accepting/ promoting trans identities in children. I'm asking them to stop promoting it in PHSE sessions. I think two things have changed, they have woken up to the harm this ideology causes, and are scared of being sued.

Please use the things from my post here if it helps!

So depressing that so many gay and lesbian people have cheered gender ideology on. Whoever tried to link it with the (historic?) oppression of gays and lesbians pulled a very neat trick for a while there.

Mention of the end of Mermaids, goodnight to Stonewall too?

Yeah wonder what Sandi Toksvig is saying now? She was an incredible disappointment.

The tale of the emperor’s clothing came to my mind just before I walked into this room here, and found it was already a phrase being used. Only just over two years ago. Like most members of the general public, from an average to humble background i developed a serious twitch trying to ignore the batshit i was hearing. Being a semi retired women's rights worker.

Thank you all for providing pointers to educate me.

I feel teary for those of you who whatever you do in your real life have stayed and fought and waited.

Datun, Arrabella, redtoohbrush, iwanttoretire, overtonwindow, sinnerboy, boiledbeatle, to name but a few

My heroes

I can sleep tonight knowing that my 2 half grandchild and yet to be born will be safer.

Thankyou

It is not over yet, and we all must continue wherever we can. I have raised awareness with my friends and adult children, been agreed with, mostly, been called a transphobe, you all know the drill.

But this is the beginning of the end.

As for politics we are in the era of popularism, so we can rely on a shift as they wake up to jo bloggs like me at the ballot box.

I'm going to sit and read the entire debate tomorrow, but I just skipped ahead and treated myself to the LRM slapdown.

Gorgeous.

Victoria Atkins and I may differ on many (most?) political issues, but as part of the Pissed Off Sisterhood of a Certain Age, I salute her work tonight.

I am not a hero.

The heroes are the women and men who fought publicly. I've always stayed hidden behind a screen - largely because the impact of this to my own family was already enough and its taken me a long time to deal with it.

In fact I think MN has been the way I've dealt with it.

And I've not been alone. I've been just a name in a crowd.

From the word go, something felt off in the way I was told I HAD to respond and comply to my brother. Its been about making sense of that sense of off and why it felt wrong and what questioned it raised.

I don't think, I've really ever doubted that the truth would never surface. Even when others did though. We were allowed to keep talking here and so long as that continued the wall of reality would always hit eventually because thats what history tells us and because of the structure of checks and balances within the English system being more robust than in other countries.

We've ALWAYS had, the 'in the public interest' argument on our side too.

And yep, I'm like a dog with a bone when it comes to certain subjects. I can just bore the tits off people.

Still a long way to go on this, but the more people start to talk - and they are not talking in Westminster - the harder it is to maintain a lie. Because thats just what happens. Remove the fear and communication opens up. The narrative is no longer contolled by the organisational body trying to impose its beliefs on others.

Theres lots of people still playing the long game now too...
