BBC WhatsApp story. Released on the day WhatsApp reduced from 16 to 13 last week.

And it's the nspcc that's quoted.

Most schools in the wider NE area passed on the email the police sent out; I have a copy.

Again the nspcc is quoted as the place to turn to.

The nspcc are not fit for purpose.

Northumbria Police Message 25th March 2024

WhatsApp group encouraging self-harm in young people

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Trust has made us aware of a WhatsApp group called “everyone you know x” which is circulating in North Tyneside. It is aimed at Y6 students.

There are currently 500 members, and the group encourages members to self-harm.

Three young people are in hospital following overdose and they have disclosed that there is a social media trend whereby young people are being encouraged to take overdoses on a points scoring system eg, if admitted to hospital, if a liver specialist has been contacted etc.

As these young people are not from the North Tyneside area, and there is potential for this to affect other year groups, we are making all schools in the force area aware.

The NSPCC website has information about helping children who may have been affected by such content Content promoting self-harm, suicide and eating disorders | NSPC

Good god. Aimed at y6! There must be adult influences to put suggestions such like this. That is sickening.

Childline / nspcc plotted with mermaids to create secret online spaces.

a massive WhatsApp group in North Tyneside which targeted y5 and 6 children has led to several children attempting suicide as part of dares. I believe there are a couple currently in hospital.

I can't believe any of what James describes in that tweet was seen as appropriate or safe. BY THE NSPCC!

"Young people know their own mind and wouldn't be overdosing if they didn't genuinely feel like they needed to"
"No, children aren't influenced into self-harm by others and no-one would pretend to be vulnerable if they weren't to induce children to do things".

Just getting the usual arguments in before they arrive...

ResisterRex · 13/04/2024 19:46

I wonder if that is significant timing, Arabella. He picked up his knighthood when all this was quite well known and after the James Makings debacle, IIRC. Maybe we can hope the road is running out.

Please can someone explain the WhatsApp/NSPCC situation.

Apologies! I'm finding it hard to understand what's happened there.

And we've been censored and warned on MN for saying the word cult when the leader of Stonewall was spouting about have had revelations from frekking Jesus!

People who claim to have had direct instructions from a deity often are not considered wholly reliable.

It's only just struck me as a particularly risky strain of the 'appeal to authority' fallacy - where the authority is mysterious, supernatural, and can't be questioned.

ArabellaScott · 13/04/2024 19:55

Plus the endless assertions that feminists were being steered by Christian organisations is particularly irritating me now.

There may well be some feminists who are religious, but I don't recall any of them claiming to have had divine instrction!

Amidst may remarkable revelations, that managed to stand out.

If I didn't know better, I'd think Hunt is styling herself after Eileen Atkins' Saint Joan. I've included a clip of her 1960 performance as Joan of Arc here but the image I have in mind is from the theatre programme and vivid description that a relative had from seeing her in Saint Joan.

(1977) She acted in Sir George Bernard Shaw's play, "Saint Joan," in a Prospect Production at the Liverpool Playhouse in Liverpool, Merseyside, England with Charles Kay, Frederick Treves, Paul Jesson, John Bowe, Geoffrey Palmer OBE, Emrys James, Robert Eddison, and Ronald Lacey in the cast. John Dove was director.

James Esse posted an image where the nspcc / childline were working with mermaids to facilitate online web chat spaces etc.

Mermaids described teens using WhatsApp to remain in touch after residential weekends.

NSPCC keep being recommended for support for children who've experienced harm via WhatsApp groups

that will be some legacy. To have, virtually single handedly rendered the previously good name of Stonewall on a par with PIE.

Allison Bailey has read the article:

https://x.com/bluskyeallison/status/1779209777777705077?s=46&t=WHoOZ_3Kv5G6-FyQuvE0LQ

"1/ According to Ruth Hunt CEO of Stonewall until 2019, “It’s perfectly legitimate for Stonewall to advocate that position [that transwomen are women]. It doesn’t say ‘trans women are women’ and if you disagree, we’re going to do something terrible to you

https://x.com/bluskyeallison/status/1779209779644105132?s=46&t=WHoOZ_3Kv5G6-FyQuvE0LQ

"2/Well, Ruth, I did disagree and Stonewall did something terrible to me. On 21 October 2019, Stonewall wrote to my chambers (a few months after you stepped down as CEO) demanding that I be sacked, shamelessly leveraging Stonewall's influence to do so. https://allisonbailey.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/PH-Bundle-pp-331-2-Stonewall-Complaint.pdf"

https://x.com/bluskyeallison/status/1779209781359644825?s=46&t=WHoOZ_3Kv5G6-FyQuvE0LQ

"3/ Whether Stonewall's actions in soliciting my removal from chambers was unlawful under the EqA 2010 is the subject of appeal to the Employment Appeal Tribunal. That Stonewall sent this letter to my chambers is not in dispute. All because I disagreed that TWAW literally."

https://x.com/bluskyeallison/status/1779209783163097258?s=46&t=WHoOZ_3Kv5G6-FyQuvE0LQ

"4/Ruth, I watched you in the House of Lords recently as you talked about how hard it was coming out, the battles you had to fight. I too had to fight those battles, a decade earlier. I also had to fight to become a barrister. None of that mattered to your organisation though."

https://x.com/bluskyeallison/status/1779209784777961717?s=46&t=WHoOZ_3Kv5G6-FyQuvE0LQ

"5/So, please, stop lying. Stonewall under your tenure, and as a result of the actions that you took, turned into a shameless, vicious and dangerous organisation. This is your legacy, Ruth.
Ends"
