Labour infighting over trans issues reignited by Cass Review

But Rosie Duffield, a Labour MP placed under investigation by the party last year for campaigning against gender ideology, pointed out that women who had exposed the scandal had been “blanked, sidelined and dismissed” by male leaders simply for speaking up.

And feminist Julie Bindel demanded an apology from Mr Streeting for failing to support her gender-critical views when he was president of the National Union of Students.

In reply to Ms Bindel’s accusation, Mr Streeting replied: “From memory (16 years on, so correct me if I’m wrong!) I replied to confirm that you weren’t on NUS’ no platform policy and as this was in relation to a motion passed by the autonomous women’s campaign I was not empowered to overturn it (not least as a male president!).”

This prompted Ms Duffield to retweet the (Les Streeting) statement, with the message: “To the many women blanked, sidelined, dismissed by male leaders when speaking up and exposing this for years.”

And Ms Bindel wrote: “Glad to see you are now openly critical of the gender ideology that led to the atrocities against children outlined in the Cass report.

“I am open to accepting an apology from you. In 2008, when you were NUS president, I was no-platformed alongside five fascist groups for ‘transphobia’.

“I contacted you and asked for your help. You gave none. I asked you to condemn those that had orchestrated the no-platforming, and you refused.

“Have you any idea of the reputational damage this caused me? How it gave others permission to no-platform, denounce and defame me?
“How it meant that I could be slandered by other organisations, and so many, many universities around the UK and elsewhere? If this sounds bitter then good, because I am.”

To this message, Ms Duffield said: “Thank you for leading us all here Julie. Without you, most of us wouldn’t have had a clue what had been happening to children who were far too young to have the critical faculties or agency to consent.”

It's a fucking typo, I meant 'then'. It's bloody obviously a typo.

I'm not going to engage with Adam any more tonight. It seems unkind to someone in that state.

In the last election I voted Lib Dem as they were entirely pro remain, Corbyn being a Marxist was a Brexit supporter and as a result Labour refused to back a remain policy.
This is just like the referendum days. Again Labour sitting on the fence about issues that affect the majority of the population and held hostage by a small number of zealots
nothing has changed and don't expect labour to back women's and children's rights.

My fear was that we’d get the no one is talking about it line up until the GE, it dismisses the concerns of women and makes it hard to effect change.

I don’t think that can be said now due to Cass and for that I’m relieved and grateful

It hopefully will shift the landscape considerably and protecting children is what I’d prioritise so I’m really happy to see it. I know there’s a way to go still generally but it really helps.

We're not even close to the end of the first chapter.

Labour grassroots are held in a vise-like grip by those who robotically chant: Trans men are men. Trans women are women. Trans rights are human rights.

There's no critical thinking involved. That's the problem with Labour. And those activists aren't going to have a Damascene conversion just because someone's written a report.

Although this is still concerning

Labour have not been in power for almost 15 years - any action to "remove all protections for them as a sex class" happened under the Tories.

It's very clear you want a conservative government, just own it instead of smearing the opposition.

Why aren’t His Majesty’s Opposition opposing the harms to women caused by various consecutive Coalition and Conservative Governments?

Thankfully Boris seems to have undone a lot of May’s TRA stuff and Sunak has continued down the same path (hence the Cass Review actually happening) but commissioning for post rape support services in Brighton will have been carried out by Labour and the Greens.

The ideology is misogynistic. Anyone who doesn’t reject the ideology is a misogynist.

The ideology is a safeguarding nightmare. Anyone who supports the ideology is a safeguarding nightmare.

People who cannot tell the truth, who cannot process simple facts, cannot be trusted with positions of power.

Why would someone who thinks women can have a penis, make a good leader? He might think money grows on trees, or global warming is a conspiracy.

I’m bloody disappointed May fell for it all. Shows how successful the grooming was.

What kind of poster gets drunk on a Friday night and their first impulse is to come onto a feminism thread, on mumsnet, a predominantly female website to try and goad, crow and argue with women about lost access to rape supports?
Answers on a postcard.

And so drunk they can't work out very basic typos or remember what they typed 2 minutes previously. That's properly hammered is that!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Starmer came out and condemned these things that have been done to women rather than constantly banging on about how trans people are the most oppressed people in human history?

This is it isn't it? The question that none of them can answer. If it is so bad and happened on the Tories' watch then why are Labour not committing to undoing it all?

We all know it would've been worse under Labour as they'd have been gung ho about progressing trans rights.

The Tories have seemingly been asleep at the wheel rather than actively pushing it, from what I can tell.

RebelliousCow · 13/04/2024 08:22

A piece by Mary Harrington on the inherent conflict between the provision of gender 'care' on demand in the context of a socialised health system ( NHS) - and the realities of social solidarity on which Left politics is predicated:

Well, exactly. When does Starmer ever miss an opportunity to condemn the Tories for shit that happened on their watch?

But unfortunately for him, even if he privately agrees that women should be entitled to single sex rape crisis support, he has a problem. Not only would saying so make it clear he doesn't believe trans women are women, he would also be perceived as showing less empathy towards a trans woman who has been raped and needs rape counselling than his party has consistently shown to trans women who have committed rape.

How do you square that circle?

You can't, obviously.

Best to just say nothing and hope nobody notices.

Had a banging chat with DH about this today. We will once more be cancelling out each other’s vote, but in the other direction from usual!

Do you not remember the Friday night drunk threads? Or the Bluestocking?
I was just drinking wine while I was posting. On a Friday. Its pretty common I think 😂

AVindicationOfFeminists · 13/04/2024 09:43

I think mentioning you’re pissed in the middle of a heated political discussion is a bit impolitic, to be honest.

For whatever reason, your dogged style of discussion really winds people up, so a lighthearted ‘scuse the typos I’m pissed’ followed by ‘what does that mean’ about someone else’s typos is going to irritate.

<wry smile>

Good grief. The Conservatives have not proposed anything to oppose in this area.

Lee Anderson said last year that the Conservatives should fight the election on "culture wars and trans debate".

Other political parties would need their heads read to let the incumbent party dictate what's discussed to suit their election strategy. So of course Labour are steering clear.

If the Conservatives put forward a change to legislation then Labour could oppose it. It seems to be taking Badenoch ages to mull it over though.
