Labour infighting over trans issues reignited by Cass Review

But Rosie Duffield, a Labour MP placed under investigation by the party last year for campaigning against gender ideology, pointed out that women who had exposed the scandal had been “blanked, sidelined and dismissed” by male leaders simply for speaking up.

And feminist Julie Bindel demanded an apology from Mr Streeting for failing to support her gender-critical views when he was president of the National Union of Students.

In reply to Ms Bindel’s accusation, Mr Streeting replied: “From memory (16 years on, so correct me if I’m wrong!) I replied to confirm that you weren’t on NUS’ no platform policy and as this was in relation to a motion passed by the autonomous women’s campaign I was not empowered to overturn it (not least as a male president!).”

This prompted Ms Duffield to retweet the (Les Streeting) statement, with the message: “To the many women blanked, sidelined, dismissed by male leaders when speaking up and exposing this for years.”

And Ms Bindel wrote: “Glad to see you are now openly critical of the gender ideology that led to the atrocities against children outlined in the Cass report.

“I am open to accepting an apology from you. In 2008, when you were NUS president, I was no-platformed alongside five fascist groups for ‘transphobia’.

“I contacted you and asked for your help. You gave none. I asked you to condemn those that had orchestrated the no-platforming, and you refused.

“Have you any idea of the reputational damage this caused me? How it gave others permission to no-platform, denounce and defame me?
“How it meant that I could be slandered by other organisations, and so many, many universities around the UK and elsewhere? If this sounds bitter then good, because I am.”

To this message, Ms Duffield said: “Thank you for leading us all here Julie. Without you, most of us wouldn’t have had a clue what had been happening to children who were far too young to have the critical faculties or agency to consent.”

For whatever reason, your dogged style of discussion really winds people up, so a lighthearted ‘scuse the typos I’m pissed’ followed by ‘what does that mean’ about someone else’s typos is going to irritate.

Especially when those typos were easy to decipher! Not like when your phone decides to type utter fucking gibberish instead of what's intended.

I think mentioning you’re pissed in the middle of a heated political discussion is a bit impolitic, to be honest.

<wry smile>

Literally anything I post winds people up! The only excuse last night for making such a clanger and missing what I already said was I was under the influence 😂

I've read back though and think I did OK in the circumstances!

Labour have been in OPPOSITION for yonks.

The job of opposition is to hold the government to account.

Not just electioneer for themselves!

The lack of a robust opposition is a massive problem in lots of councils. Manchester City (staunchly Labour) is an embarrassing shitshow of cronyism, just like the Tory government is.

Good grief. The Conservatives have not proposed anything to oppose in this area.

Lee Anderson said last year that the Conservatives should fight the election on "culture wars and trans debate".

Other political parties would need their heads read to let the incumbent party dictate what's discussed to suit their election strategy. So of course Labour are steering clear.

If the Conservatives put forward a change to legislation then Labour could oppose it. It seems to be taking Badenoch ages to mull it over though.

The Opposition should hold to account. This means in relation to both what's happening and what's proposed.

Therefore, if Labour had wanted the Tories to do something about women's rights, they could easily have said something / challenged the status quo.

I'm afraid I see it differently.

The Conservatives have been in power for 14 years. It's not been great. People are fed up. They can't fight the election on the basis of their fantastic record in government.

But luckily for them, the leader of the opposition has said that a woman can have a penis, so obviously they're going to take advantage of that and say, "Yeah OK we're shit, but look at that guy, do you really want someone who thinks a woman can have a penis running the country?"

The real question is, why the fuck are Labour saying these things?

Because Labour is full of self serving politicos. They are as after lining their own nest as much as the Tories and they use Soviet style tactics.
At least the Torirs are open about it non of this mealy mouthed , for the benefit of the most vulnerable crap about trans.
At least the stories allow free speech, and the ones like Sunak are actually decent people.

The ideology is misogynistic. Anyone who doesn’t reject the ideology is a misogynist.

The ideology is a safeguarding nightmare. Anyone who supports the ideology is a safeguarding nightmare.

People who cannot tell the truth, who cannot process simple facts, cannot be trusted with positions of power.

Why would someone who thinks women can have a penis, make a good leader? He might think money grows on trees, or global warming is a conspiracy.

I’m bloody disappointed May fell for it all. Shows how successful the grooming was.

Anyone who doesn’t reject the ideology is a misogynist.

This is a ridiculous level of generalisation. It is similar to if I said "anyone who doesn't reject Reform is a racist". Which I wouldn't, because it would be offensive, over generalising and generally very rude. So how come you think it is OK to say that?

There is no evidence Starmer is a misogynist, in fact the opposite is true. He did a lot for women when he was DPP and the current Labour policies as outlined at conference are squarely focussed on improving things for women in this country.

Maybe save calling people misogynists for actual misogynists. People like Frank Hester for example.

There's generally a problem finding people to be councillors. I don't think the constant attacks on politicians at all levels and "they are all as bad as each other" helps at all. You would need to be very thick skinned to go into politics at the moment which means its probably not attracting the people it needs to (I.e. people who want to do the best for their communities vs. People who want to be in charge and make it all about them)

😂what?? I cannot even imagine what this means...

Can I check I understand the rest of your post - are you basically saying all politicians are corrupt and you think people should give the Tories some credit for being openly corrupt?

BezMills · 13/04/2024 10:06

Invalidating the sex class of women in favour of a new one including women and men, is misogyny.
If Star doesn't want to look like a misogynist, he should have a word with his mouth and stop saying misogynistic stuff.

The "sex class of women" is already invalidated - trans women have been using women's spaces for years and years. The GRA is a legal instrument that invalidates the sex class of women and no party is proposing repealing it.

Based on that, the implication is that all politicians are misogynists. As well as all members of the public who don't actively support repealing the GRA. Basically anyone apart from a small number of GC campaigners.

My opinion is that effectively weakens the meaning of "misogynist" to the point it is meaningless. Which is definitely beneficial to some people, but is bad for women as it takes away a useful word to describe what men do to us.

You miss my point (I should be used to this by now!)

Manchester City Council has NO opposition because it’s almost entirely Labour. There are no shortages of candidates, the borough has over half a million residents and there are only 96 council seats to fill.

The U.K. Conservative governments of the last 10 (or 14 years) have had no opposition on policies that harm women because, why?

I think it’s because Labour (and the Left more generally) has a misogyny problem (no elected female leaders of the Parliamentary Labour Party ever, for starters) but you don’t, you think it’s because what? That Labour aren’t going to bother doing their actual job (being THE OPPOSITION) but are instead just twiddling their thumbs for 14 years until they win a majority again? Please do correct me if you have a different excuse for Labour being asleep at the opposition wheel!

Corbyn was on well on board with May’s plans for Self ID, Starmer is a bit more cautious and fence-sittery but then uses the mother of a murdered teenager to score points against Sunak, to deflect criticism of Starmer’s ‘99.9 women don’t have a penis’ nonsense.

The Conservatives have had plenty of opposition on "policies that harm women" - e.g. the rape clause in tax credits
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-39652791.amp

Unfortunately their majority is so huge it doesn't really matter what "opposition" people provide.

I am interested why you think they are "asleep at the wheel" - what legislation that harms women has gone through unopposed?

Family

What is the child tax credit 'rape clause'?

Changes to tax credits which campaigners have dubbed the "rape clause" became law at the beginning of April.

I'm not a troll but I am a Starmer supporter, it would be completely normal for people like me to post on threads about Labour. Debate is not "trolling". Also, troll hunting is against Mumsnet guidelines.

Ha! Nope, just continuing the conversation now my head is clear.

I’ve reclaimed it. I rather like the fact that you find me revolting, I find the same about your opinions and posting style.

Can we discuss how last night you adamantly claimed that no women were kept out of rape support(s) services?

Yes - that's been the response to so many women raising it on the doorstep - nobody's talking about it.
Well we have been talking and now everyone's talking about it. Meanwhile these utter fools have sold children and women down the river by signing up to a lie - that people can change sex.
And instead of being responsible, thoughtful and looking at the evidence labour politicians they joined the howling mobs, bullying and shouting down women and abandoning safeguarding children cos they signed up to the wrong side of history.

And now they want our votes back...

A million times this. Labour the so called compassionate, liberal, caring party (unlike those nasty Tories of course) allowing wholesale bullying and intimidation of their own MPs, dismissing women's concerns, joining in with the vitriol against women, telling women not to vote for them, expelling women from the Party, wouldn't even have Karen Ingala-Smith as a Labour Party member.
