Thread to record where and when to find tv/radio commentary on the Cass report, so that it is easy for people to find it on catchup. If you’re listening/watching and it comes up, please record the channel/show and the time

It wasn't coverage exactly but when I was in the dentist's waiting room this morning they had the radio on - first item on the news and a soundbite from "human rights activist" Helen Joyce! I thought it was BBC Radio 2, but it might not have been - but I was impressed that a) they let her speak at all, b) described her in those terms and c) let her be the only voice...

Appalonia · 10/04/2024 18:32

Now talking about how 70% are teenage girls, pressure on them. HC talking about online porn
now Eva Echo, a TRA!!
Felt v superficial, no idea what someone who didn't know much about this issue would make of it tbh.

nauticant · 10/04/2024 17:37

Isn't it odd that they have this big story, they break their coverage in two, and separate the two parts with the story about friendly foxes and some news headlines?

I was struck by that.

borntobequiet · 10/04/2024 18:56

all the trans people I've heard interviewed today have been male

Much like the last God knows how many years. I think that for many people in the media, that’s their only frame of reference.

Appalonia · 10/04/2024 19:02

Top story on C4 now

Iloveshihtzus · 10/04/2024 19:03

C4 a bit like the Guardian on this.

dapsnotplimsolls · 10/04/2024 19:06

C4 very much focusing on long waiting lists.

Appalonia · 10/04/2024 19:09

C4 initial emphasis on the long waiting list
Children badly let down by the amount of time they have to wait
Poor quality of evidence
Ideology ON ALL SIDES has directed care ( really??)
Increase in numbers and increase in girls
Hannah Barnes on now. Again talking of lack of evidence
Back to interview with gender questioning child ( girl )

Cismyfatarse · 10/04/2024 19:12

C4 Isn't this Dr telling lies? They DO offer drugs NHS no longer offers.

Appalonia · 10/04/2024 19:15

Interview with Aidan Kelly now
Will prescribe hormones to teens
Talks about 5 year wait for treatment
Says they're not doing anything outside what NHS wd do
Lack of trained staff
Don't agree ideology has any place in healthcare but doesn't think it's been lead by ideology

RedToothBrush · 10/04/2024 19:19

Just a thought here, but as Transactivists become increasingly discredited as pushers of quackology, the media 'rent-a-quote' gravy train and media opportunities are liable to dry up slowly but surely.

Appalonia · 10/04/2024 19:20

Now interviewing Dr DavidbBell. Finally speaking sense!
Damage caused by this treatment
GIDS was a gateway to puberty blockers
Rethink of child psychological services
can't open up clinics that give the wrong services
look at other issues

Citrusandginger · 10/04/2024 19:22

MorrisZapp · 10/04/2024 12:12

Matt Chorley on Times Radio just made mincemeat of Mermaids. Hannah Barnes on now.

I was impressed with that interview. I had thought MC had a tendency to be kind and not take too much notice of issues that matter to women.

What a surprise. New mermaids ceo got a proper, grumpy savaging.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 10/04/2024 19:24

dapsnotplimsolls · 10/04/2024 19:06

C4 very much focusing on long waiting lists.

ITV News was the same. Spinning lack of evidence as lack of interest in caring for trans individuals. Interview with a mtf moaning about long waiting list.

Appalonia · 10/04/2024 19:34

It's so frustrating feeling like the pieces are just
( intentionally? ) missing the point. And SICK of hearing about the ' toxicity ' of the debate. That's only come from one side...

Dymaxion · 10/04/2024 19:56

I heard Dr David Bell on R4 and thought he gave a fair summary of where things had gone wrong. I wonder if CAMHS had had the resources it really needed, how many of those young girls would have been directed to The Tavistock ? Would they have been able to explore the real issues at the heart of these children's distress ?

Iloveshihtzus · 10/04/2024 20:36

Interesting piece on Dr. Alan Kelly (BTW he is not a medical Dr. - he is a psychologist. I am a psychologist and I would not encourage people to use experimental drugs( or any drugs. In Ireland, where he initially qualified, a psychologist cannot be a clinical lead and cannot prescribe drugs, just FYI. It seems as if he is clinical lead in a new clinic, which prescribes puberty blockers and hormones. In his C4 interview he presents more as a medical Dr, even an endocrinologist, although that was my personal take on the interview).

I'm having flashbacks to the whole MMR/autism/Wakefield stramash.

Worried parents, heart wrenching stories, and Science wheeling out eminent people, talking about data and evidence.

As a species, we've a tendency to go for stories.

https://www.badscience.net/2008/08/the-medias-mmr-hoax/

There are many books about MMR. There will be many more about this and today will be a seminal example of the preference for worried parents and moving stories over evidence.

nauticant · 10/04/2024 22:20

The story also led on The World Tonight on Radio 4. This is one of the serious Radio 4 news programmes, not like the PM programme.

Obviously they had the obligatory transwoman on first saying that the worst possible thing to happen would be slower or lesser medical interventions.

The programme approached lots of doctors and institutions but none would talk with them. But they did get a single GP willing to speak with them. He was uncertain saying that doctors were operating in the dark. He seemed to think that doctors understand the impacts of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones but didn't understand those in the long term.

The female presenter put the "toxicity of the debate" to him, which he strongly agreed with but she didn't ask him anything about the source or nature of the toxicity.

One of the biggest problems he'd dealt with was trans people taking offence but he presented that as his own failing. But he was willing to say that gender identity co-exists with other mental health problems.

334bu · 10/04/2024 22:34

Newsnight discussing it now.

Rubidium · 10/04/2024 22:47

Just watching the interview with Hannah the transwoman on Newsnight, having earlier heard Amelia on PM: have any news outlets interviewed any transmen today? I’d have thought this would be especially relevant given the big increase in female patients at Gids.

Allowing the vital question about co morbidities in children to be hand waved away by talking about an individual adult's experiences and pushing the line that delaying harms children.

Appalling coverage completely ignoring the issues about children and the extent of evidence and research in the Cass report in favour of allowing a self interested transactivist to talk - endlessly. Which is why we're in this mess because these the BBC have continually enabled self interested transactivists to drown out the need to safeguard children and provide safe evidenced healthcare.

Exactly.

Do you by any chance have a TAMHS person in your school - ie a part time CAMHS implant. I tried for years to get DD diagnosed and only happened because the TAMHS person kept an eye on DD and recognised how much she was struggling. Then insisted that CAMHS saw her for diagnosis.
